    Welcome back to Hourless Life, where we are driving around the world.
    In today's video, we visit the sleepy Mexican beach town of El Cuyo. Located on the Yucatan Peninsula about 2.5 hours from Cancun, this is not a resort. It's a laid-back, quiet place with no major grocery store, no gas station, and a church some locals don't even know the name of.
    Is this your kind of place?
    We interview some people to find out what brought them to El Cuyo and take you on a quick tour of the town. Hit us up with your questions as we continue to overland the world.

      No way! What a small world. Our friends had a long-term rental there. Don't think it was an airbnb when we were there. Either that or they just had a very long rental. But we really enjoyed their company and our time there. What about you guys? ~ Eric

    I love that my kids, even my 2 year old, like watching your videos. 😄 I like the simplicity of a little place like that. There's no draw of things you feel like you have to do and explore. You can just relax.

    Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for this one Eric … just a little paradise and definitely my kind of place indeed.
    I really appreciate you taking 8 hrs out of your day to make this video … I read one of your replies explaining what it takes to do this kind of thing.
    I have never previously shown much interest in that area before…. but you are like a window to the world for us and now I have been finding out more about the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize.
    I even know where it is on the map now! Lol.
    It’s such an education and thanks again for the great job you do.
    Love to Brittany and Caspian …

    It's a small beach town but you can do many things. For example bird watching (including flamingoes), shelling, flora and fauna watching, cook a meal and eat it on the beach at night next to a bonfire, work out (walking, running, swimming, kite surfing, canoeing), fishing ( you don't need a license or anything like that), try the local food, etc.

    I moved to the Big Island of Hawaii to live quiet on an island and to finish school. After 6 months I knew I wanted to move back to the mainland. It was too quiet. There was a lack of emergency resources, groceries were so expensive(although we had four avocado trees, lychee, pineapple and lemon in our yard). But I loved the footage and to visit someplace like that would be great.

      Hi Robert. It is a really small and sleepy town, and if that is your thing, you will probably enjoy it very much. I don't have any information on Airbnb or rentals in that area. One of our Patreon supporters was there and they had rented a place right on the beach. We stayed with them a couple of nights. I didn't ask him, and they have moved on in their journey to Mexico now. But best to you and I hope you enjoy your own journey. Live your best life! ~ Eric

    I appreciate your interaction with people you meet. I think it was frank Capra the movie director who said the reason people watch movies is that they are interested in people.
    As far as wifi goes. TH-camr Itchy Boots has uploaded videos sometimes twice a week from Argentina to Nicaragua. She may be in Belize now. You might connect with her about how she finds wifi. 😏

    • @HourlessLife
      @HourlessLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love your insight on the director. I enjoyed just randomly asking folks walking down the street if I could ask them a few questions. I had fun with them today. Also appreciate you pointing me to another traveler. Always love connecting with folks. Finding wifi would be a lot easier if I were a solo traveler. But we're wrangling a 5 year old. He takes a lot of time, and is our priority. If it were just me, I'd be producing videos all the time and making them better than I do haha. Still, appreciate you watching and being part of our community. ~ Eric

    • @HourlessLife
      @HourlessLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Me too Patsy. Thank you for the kind words on the content. I really and genuinely appreciate it! I think that what most people don't realize is that the average video that we produce as a family every week takes me 2-4 days to make. This means I get less time with Brittany and Caspian. Honestly I wasn't even going to do a video today at all. We've seen some incredible things over the past week and we just wanted to take it all in and enjoy it. (Which we did) But this morning rolled around and we hadn't filmed a thing. I told Brittany, I'm going to head out and whip out a video. I left around 8AM got back to our friend's place at 10:30AM. Locked myself in a room and started downloading, then editing and uploading, then processing, then making the thumbnail, adding music, going through YT's checks, then writing descriptions, etc. All in all I was done with my video around 4PM. So to put this in perspective, I worked from 8-4 (8hrs) to produce a 9 minute video. Also I didn't get to see Brittany or Caspian for those 8 hours. When we produced a video as a family, we sacrifice MUCH more time in producing the video as a family. All that to say it is a balance. I too love having them in the videos, but we have to balance family time in with TH-cam time. We don't really make any money from YT (maybe 50 cents to a dollar an hour) so trust me when I say that at this point we don't do it for the income. We do it because it is part of our family mission statement (Love. Explore. Study. Share.) to share. So hopefully there will be more of Brittany and Caspian in the future, but sometimes there may not be a video, or you may just get me. But hopefully whatever we produce will be worth a watch and part of our story of our drive around the world. ~ Eric

    It's not paradise when there are frequent power failures each month which could sometimes last over 6 hours.
    It's not paradise when you frequently get bitten alive by mosquitoes and other insects.
    It's not paradise when rotting sargasso frequently blanket the beachfront 5 - 6 months every year
    It's not paradise when phone and internet services are intermittent and frequently unreliable.
    We have higher expectations of what paradise ought to be.
    El Cuyo is a nice quiet place.
    Romanticizing it as paradise might perhaps be a bit too imaginative.
    Sorry.
    Enjoyed your video.
    Blessings & best wishes!!!
    Cheers!

      A&F Everyone has their ideas of what paradise is. As you can see from my street interviews, some folks love it there. For me it isn't perfection, but it was a really nice and quiet place to visit. The people were friendly and kind. We enjoyed our time there. ~ Eric

    • @sheratoncadwell
      @sheratoncadwell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HourlessLife We lived in El Cuyo for a long time.
      People come and go all the time.
      They leave El Cuyo often because reality eventually catches up with romanticized notions & expectations of the place.
      Paradise is indeed different for different folks.
      Some may be genuinely happy with very little while others may not be happy even if they had everything.
      Romanticized presentations of a place are useful for tempting and seducing.
      In our opinion, however, it is more helpful when one is informed in advance of the practical realities and real difficulties of any place.
      Once again, be forewarned:
      In El Cuyo, expect the mosquitoes & insects to bite mercilessly.
      Expect frequent power failures and brown outs.
      Expect unreliable phone & internet connectivity.
      Expect excessive smelly sargasso on the beach 5 - 6 months every year.
      If you can live with these realities, then El Cuyo might perhaps be paradise for you.
      Our blessings & best wishes, as always.
      Cheers!
