My husband and I saw this the other night at QPAC in Brisbane, Australia. The production was a great night of entertainment and your eyes were drawn to the clever staging even before the curtain opened with clever cuts-out and an eye-catching sign above the stage. Throughout the entire performance, the audience was interacting with the cast - either clapping or cheering, feeling poignant or just plain laughing heartily. One older fellow up the back even yelled out, "Wow, don't you look lovely" when the young protagonist donned a haute couture gown, which had everyone in close proximity burst out laughing. And typical of a Brizzie audience, they always know how to show their appreciation and gave a standing ovation at the end, which was certainly deserved by everyone involved. Ladies in Black is a thoroughly entertaining Aussie musical set in an upmarket Sydney department store around the late 50s. The storyline delves into the lives of its employees and so many of the situations depicted were exact replicas from those times - some cringe worthy, others pure nostalgia. Sending a big round of applause to the writer, composer, lyricist, musical director, musos, set decorators, costumers and lighting crew and everyone else backstage - along with a great cast who had us all in stitches on many occasions, as well as feeling quite poignant in a few places ... and made so many of us in the audience very envious they had access to all those gorgeous gowns.
