Dionne Warwick's sound is distinctive. A musical treasure.
...to a certain generation of black people....she was just so ...pleasing to us...that she did great timeless ballads...pop songs and movie soundtracks...so elegantly...without the overly done histrionics that other ladies felt they needed to do...she is always so elegant and classy...refined..her voice is made for movie soundtracks....ads for fine products.....cars...perfume...cologne....furs...diamonds...haute couture.....just the best...of everything life has to offer....she is a superior...tasteful....unique...platinum grade talent....
Yasssss. Just her voice & the backing instruments. No auto tune, no enhancement. Zero help from technology. Transcendent artist & 1 of the all-time greats.
yes!! so glad young folks are rediscovering dionne Warwick. she sings these songs like she's slicing warm butter, when in fact these are INCREDIBLY difficult to sing.

Dionne was a supreme vocalist. In her youth she soured to even greater heights when she was a full fledged soprano. Dionne had no equal not aretha nor patti. Dionne grew up in the greatest vocal family in history and so her talent was larger than life.
I always hate it when people say they don't know who Dionne Warwick is.Or they say she is Whitney Houston.Though they are related and very powerful singers.Whitney earned her props,but Ms.Warwick is a legend.She gave us some of the best songs through generations.
Dionne’s gift is that DELICIOUS tone and the way her vocal acrobatics are so understated and just pleasing to the ear without being offensive or too much. She knew how to edit herself vocally. Less is often more.
It's like ecstasy. Dionne is a living Legend, a Diva, an Icon and one of the greatest female singers of all time. Thank you lady D for sharing your giftedness with the world.

I’ll Never Love This Way Again was released in 1979. Heartbreaker, when I was in college. Dionne never sings a song the same way at any of her concerts. I have seen her twice. Her musicality and phrasing are wonderful.

she is effortless...and she was always much better live
You noticed the same thing about Dionne I always did. I call it the 'wave' or 'rollercoaster' effect where she kind of just glides along in little peaks and valleys. She is so under appreciated because she was usually a very restrained singer with sort of a 'dry' voice; like a very complicated wine that is not always appreciated by the masses. She is not really a shouter like Aretha (although Dionne could shout with the best of them)--Aretha is great but her voice sounds more impressive to the untrained ear. Dionne's voice takes a more careful listener to understand how good she really was. She has a very distinctive, almost nasally timbre to her voice that I find fascinating; however, a lot of people don't care for it. She turned Never Love This Way Again, a very simple song, into a showcase of absolute vocal artistry and a display of the amazing power of her voice.
One of the best descriptions i ever heard about Dionne was that she is like a swan gliding across the lake. Looks totally graceful and effortless...you can't see those webbed feet doing all the work to keep her moving under the water.
She loved by the masses to me 5 grammys and is a legend

The difference is Dionne was a real musician who read musical scores, she wasn't just singing lyrics. She has a bachelor, masters, and doctorate in music education. She had training for her technical skills and wasn't simply singing with her God given talent.

....yes....Heartbreaker....and she has said she does not like the song....and i have always wondered...does she not like the song itself...or the fact that at the time the Bee Gees were so hot and had produced so many stunning hits for the big divas....and hers did not do as well....it makes me sad sometimes...she is so underrated....

Nvr saw this '83 vid till today: She killed the hi-notes part at the tail-end in a way that doesn't even appear on the studio[radio] version which had heavy air play in 1983-1984. Treasure.
I guess you can see why she and Whitney Houston are indeed 1st cousins. They even have a facial resemblance.
Got to spend almost an hour just talking with her at a Newark music festival a couple of years ago and it was life changing.
The TV show Dionne is on is called "Yoru No Hit Studio", a very popular weekly Japanese music program where some of the top Japanese singers/bands go on and perform live (was broadcast live as well). They sometimes have foreign acts as guests but more often than not, "the international acts" would just lip synch. It must have been Dionne's willingness to perform live and her commitment to putting in the hours rehearsing with the house-orchestra that made them give her TWO songs when everyone else only gets to perform one.
