Commonly viewed as one of the best one-hit wonders of the 80’s, Dexys Midnight Runners were actually one of the most important bands in the UK at the start of the decade. While they achieved early success in their home market, the band struggled keeping a steady lineup, constantly shifting their members, sound and even their look. But in 1982, Dexys Midnight Runners diverse sonic explorations had come together to create a sound unlike any of their peers - a fusion of Soul and celtic folk, with a punk attitude. Their massive hit “Come on Eileen” catapulted them into international success, even knocking Michael Jackson from his steady perch at the top of the charts in 1983. “Come on Eileen” challenged every expectation for a number one hit, containing three key changes, hidden meters and drastic tempo changes (not to mention a celtic fiddle introduction and an acapella folk song ending), and in doing so, created a brilliant track of infectious hooks and dynamic motion.
“Come On Eileen” was released as a single on June 25, 1982, about a month before the Too-Rye-Ay album. The song topped the charts internationally, including the US, UK, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and Switzerland. It hit number two in Canada and was in the top ten throughout Europe. It won the Best British Single award at the 1983 Brit Awards.
Dexys Midnight Runners had been popular and already achieved their first number one in the UK with “Geno”, but this was the track that broke them into the US Market, even knocking Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” from the number one spot. The song’s singular sound was all their own, and it took the US by storm. Its music video received constant airplay on MTV at its release, further showcasing the band to the US Market.
“Come On Eileen” was a massive hit in 1982, but the band did not survive the decade. They broke up in 1987 and did not record again until 2003. Despite the band’s early success in the UK, Dexys Midnight Runners is often viewed as a “one-hit-wonder” because “Come on Eileen” was the band’s only US success. However, the track was one of the decade’s biggest triumphs - a song which captivated audiences and fellow musicians. VH1 has since named it number one on their list of 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s, and number eighteen on their list of 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s. In a poll for ITV, the British public voted “Come on Eileen” number 6 for their favorite 1980s number one song. In eschewing the synthesizer in favor of strings and brass, Dexy Midnight Runners separated their sound from the rest of their peers and created a hook-filled, pop classic which sounds as fresh today as it did in 1982.

Nothing else sounds like it! And they have the distinction of preventing Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Beat It from becoming back to back #1 on the Hot 100. If only for that achievement, they did great! And that line "moved a million hearts in mono" probably is the coolest line I ever heard on a song!

Those were the days, I was sitting in front of an old Betamax-Videorecorder, recording anything I can get a hold of on German TV at these times. Remember that song, besides many others at this Time like it was yesterday. I´m not sure if it´s just in remembrance, but Music in the eighties was way more diverse and unique and at a way higher musical level!?

One of those songs that I ignored because o was too cool only to realise it was such a unique, clever and hook laden song that I’m embarrassed to think how I dismissed it. You mentioned Bing Crosby....he’d be a good subject for artists that changed music due to his involvement in pre recording and editing, tape machines and microphone technology. I was selector for a Dj at a smallish Geno Washington gig in 1991. We worked the crowd up into a frenzy finishing withe the 13.20 version of Gil Scott Herons the bottle. He was so hyped with the vibe he told us to not stop and made the band join in for another 10 minutes. They were dripping with sweat its about 10 to 15 bpm faster than the original. He thanked us profusely afterwards and introduced us to the dripping band. I will never forget it. 🙏❤️🙏

Another belter of a review, Warren. Turning 60 this year, I was about to turn 21 when this came out and have always loved it. A true, unique phenomenon and guaranteed dance-floor filler to this day.
Your analysis is razor-sharp, as ever, and it is delightful to hear accurate use and pronunciation of 'eschew', as taught to me by a dear and now departed muso friend, who was a demon for definition and exactitude in English. I'd always heard it in my mind as 'ess-shoe', before Dick put me right 😄.
As fascinating a picking apart as always, mate. I'd never considered the key changes before and your distinctive pointing-up of them provides colour and sharpness to the image of the number.
I've always felt a little sad for Kevin Rowland - the image I have of him is of a man wandering an endless beach, eternally watching sand slip through his fingers in search of the recurrence of the single gold nugget that he once stumbled upon, discounting the much-overlooked Geno. As far as I know, Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band are still going, by the way - they were a regular feature at the really rather renowned Half Moon, Putney when I lived in that lovely corner of South West London up until 2013.
Incidentally, and as an aside that I think you would appreciate, Wednesfield is pronounced in the same manner as Wednesday - I currently live a few miles away from the very place, having moved back to the town of my teens a few years ago. There is also a Wednesbury in the vicinity!

Definitely a song that changed music. "Come On Eileen" had reverberations in the 80's and 90's. They were first to mention Johnnie Ray in a song in the 80's followed by Robert Plant "White, Clean and Neat". Also in the 80's The Escape Club had a similar soul style in their music and brought in horns, accordions, and traditional acoustic instruments as well. Then in the 90's you could here "Come On Eileen" influences in the hit by Chumbawamba "Tubthumping".

The underlying "pulse" referred to is a rhythm pattern known as the Baion. Originally from Brazil this became popular in 1950s/60s/70s songwriting as correctly observed with "concrete and clay" and "Its not unusual" other notable examples Anna (the Baion) Sivana Mangano, 24 hours from tulsa (gene pitney) and Top of the world (carpenters).

I loved Rowland’s demos from back then as well. I really loved “Who’s Back to Front” and played it on the radio often. It was rough but wonderfully so. Their early video footage was fantastic as well with what? Germans speaking over a documentary with Japanese subtitles, an Appalachian dulcimer, a tough gal on bass named Ghislaine (if I recall correctly) and a female dwarf on vocal duets/harmony. Crazy band trying to get outta nowhere and crack London. I’ve still the swirlingly dodgy bootleg on VHS! I appreciate your attention to detail here.

It was playing in the supermarket earlier and I was dancing along to it. It's definitely one of those that was just an instant classic.
A bit of a jump in mood but I'd compare it to Ghost Town by The Specials. That's another no.1 that's just like no other no.1. Great as ever, Warren, I always like your trivia (esp KR's inspiration from mishearing Squeeze :)). David

Fantastic review mate. There was didn't know about the band. It's one of my all time favorites. Song got one heck of arrangment solid hook. Too bad the band didn't have more success after that. But it's hard to follow success when you top the charts with a success like that. Heard the Kevin Rowland didn't want the song to be bigger than the band. But it's not a bad thing. I totally love the song. And the concept behind it.

I always thought (urban myth maybe?) that 'midnight runners' were the dealers who delivered the dex during the night. Since it's an 'upper' then the dance thing makes a lot of sense.

Really depends on the song. Most of the chatter has been based on fans feeling that a song or band has to be hugely successful for it to qualify, however, bands like The Stooges, XTC and the Velvet Underground etc influenced so many other bands that became even mire successful!
