This was a wonderfully safe video
That’s a cool idea! I like joining prompt challenges on Storygraph for this reason!
Emoji I relate with numbers 🤯 lol or sometimes 😫
4️⃣6️⃣
I have started to put my reading goal to lower numbers. I read 62 last year, 64 in 2023. My goal is 40 for 2025. I was in a middle of a career change in 2023/2024 so I had free time since I was studying and not working. Now, I have a new full time job and can't spend all of my free time reading or I would burn out.
I got back into reading in May 2024 and, since I don't take goals seriously, I set a goal of 24 books. I ended up reading 41 so I set a "goal" of reading 40 in 2025. I have this hobby of hunting for wish list books in thrift stores...love the rush of finding ones that I really want...and yet I still get books from the library. My poor physical TBR keeps getting neglected and I'm really not sure that I want to change that behaviour anytime soon
Love this. Using tracking data reasonable and efficiently without losing the fun is a goal I have for my reading. I don't mind the goal or target words. I noticed in recent years that I am not inspired by challenges anymore, though. It just started to feel arbitrary reading without sense. So unless I get inspired again to do any challenge I will just follow my mood.
23 is my favorite number, honestly.
As for how many books I read last year, I read 860. Aimed for 900, but by the time December hit, I was navigating a new life change. I absolutely love your comment about how we need to make goals rather than targets, because it takes away the stress of reaching the target.
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU for the discussion about goal vs target! This is exactly something I’ve been struggling with at work and having a hard time putting into words. My bosses use the word goal, but it’s the end of the world if my staff doesn’t hit it. Goals are supposed to be something you push for and not an expectation!
I read 101 books in 2024 and my goal was 100. This year I am bringing it down to 52 (a book a week) to have more time for those bigger books
I don't have a favourite number so here's my favourite mood ⛈🛌
The Goal vs Target thing really resonated with me! (Adhd)
I've been trying to read down my overwhelming physical tbr, but I'm not meeting my targets (because of life stuff) and I'm stressing myself out so much that I can't read anything at all. My main hobby. For fun. 😭
My goal last year was 80, but I ended up reading exactly 100! Lol. So this year I'm going to set my goal a bit higher.
💯 My target for 2024 was 100 books (the first time I tried that). I read 83. I hit a bit of a panic in early december realizing that I'm so far off my goals, but then I took a second and realized just how well I've done. Not only is 83 books amazing (and I didnt count DNFs, of which I also had many), but 2024 was a really hard year for me. I was burnt out because of work for most of the year, and while reading really helped keep me afloat, eventually my brain could not take it anymore. All this considered, 83 books is great and I am very happy with myself. I set my 2025 goal to 75 and whatever happens happens. I noticed I het way more stressed out when I'm ahead of the goal than when I am behind 😂
just sat down about to look for a video - i call perfect timing
as a numbers person it’s weird watching a lot of booktube (obviously not all of it) where people don’t like numbers. I’m lucky numbers come naturally to me - makes the stats portion of my reading incredibly easy 😂
I love seeing what works for different brains to preserve reading be FUN. ✨
I read 60 books last year. I’ve started to set my reading goal really low at 10 as I kept putting off reading longer books as I became more obsessed with reaching my target than actually reading the books I wanted to read. I would even count the kids books I read when baby sitting my niblings, Julia Donaldson use to really help get my numbers up. My favourite numbers are 🎱 and 9️⃣6️⃣
thank you i’ve been waiting for this video
I really loved all your thoughts about numbers in regards to goals vs targets. I totally feel all of that! I actually decided *not* to set a numbers goal for the year overall and (so far - we'll se how it feels mid-year lol) I feel much better about things?
I'm only halfway through, but I'm loving this video so much ❤️ First, gotta say, I love your Winn card (or whatever it is, it looks like a card) on your shelf, and your cute W mug 😍 Your thoughts on goal vs target is just a perfect explanation of what happens in my brain, but I don't gather my thoughts nearly as well. Definitely appreciated hearing that ❤
you're:) - I recorded 4 books in Storygraph last year but did a lot of repeat reread of comfort books :) Trying to find a way to shape my goal too - this was helpful -thanks!
I read 100 books exactly. And yes, I rushed at the end to finish that last one to reach my goal.
I hope the pup is doing better. I can remember when my Golden Jake had the surgery. I was in the room all day with him and the neighbors had to check on him to. He was a very popular dog. I would grab your knitting and books and some good chocolate and settle in .
2️⃣3️⃣ favorite number of all time lol love the video!
I have stopped having a total-books (or even pages), goal because I found that my enjoyment in books was getting worse, not better. So I have copied some of your other ideas. My goals are all something like “finish 3 series”, or “read n more of whatever category”, where n is very low, but just slightly more than last year. So far, it’s working.
I read 282 books last year. 2024 was the year I gave comics and manga more of a chance. I read entire Lumberjanes series (alas omnibuses are not out for the entire series so I couldn't mark those), read most of Fushigi Yugi, and started One Piece (thank gods for omnibuses of those, otherwise my average book length would be well below 300). I do set my goals to what I want to read, not what I know I will read, though. So despite reading 150-200 books every year (2024 was an outlier), I set my goal at 100 every year. My most important goal for this year is to mood read more and keep planned TBRs at 2-3 books so I don't stress about completing them and fail at reading anything.
I feel you on great month, bad month. I do have "regular" months as well, but if I have an excellent reading month it's pretty much guaranteed that the next one will be bad.
I realised I wasn't going to hit my number in June so I just halved it 😂 then almost slashed again in December but then didn't need to in the end. Goals can always be revisited when they aren't working 👌💖
Perfect timing. Just outside in the snow waiting on the kids to come home on the bus
I love this conversation around goals. I chose not to make a page or book goal this year because it was just stressing me out. My hardest part so far is just looking at last year and going "but I read so much more in January than this year."
I decided that for this year I was going to give myself a very attainable reading goal. In 2023 I read 130 books and I set my goal this year at 48 books. I did this because I didn’t want my reading goal to keep me from doing things like gardening or sewing (will my sewing machine see the light of day this year?) or anything else. Because my reading goal combined with my love of reading and creating TBRs and such can be a bit all-consuming. And now watching your video I can see that I also needed to make it a goal, where everything above and beyond that is gravy, instead of a target that has me sprinting full-tilt towards it. Thank you for this very insightful video.
I've always set very generic reading 'goals (or targets)' for the reading tracking websites, but I really don't care about them and never look at them after Jan 1st? I mean, I love a challenge, but for me, reading challenges are more about reading down what I own/reading through series I love/ensuring I'm reading more diversely etc so the 'number' side of thing is always more a thing of interest to me rather than something I have to do, which is a weird thing to say given the volume of what I can and do read in a year. But I enjoy reading lots so it's never stressful, but if it did become stressful I'd just do something different? That's the weird thing I find about the bookish space is what sometimes comes across from people that they NEED to read this many book - you don't, you just have to enjoy reading and read what you enjoy and at the end of the day the numbers are arbitrary (and really, no one actually cares about them except maybe yourself?). At the end of the day I just find the numbers interesting to look at from the perspective of what information it gives about me as a reader. 🤔
3 is my favorite number. I read 35 books in 2024 my goal was 12. But it was more pressure so no reading goals and no readathons this year because reading was not enjoyable anymore.
Gotta love the lovely spouse Harry cameo at the beginning!!!!! Also love the mugggggg. So many loves today
Update now I’ve wachter the whole video. You hit the nail on the head there Winn. Hopefully this year will be full of goals and not targets
🐙🕷 is my favourite number because it 8s the most fun to write!
Congrats - i don't set myself a reading goal because I know that will screw me up with wanting to hit that target and that stress! Good luck with 2025 being full if books you love 💜📚
Winn I just love you🌈🦄🧚🧝♀️🐉🧙You’re videos are always the best. Honestly I never set reading goals. But when I participate in TH-cam buddy reads that’s good for me that pulls me along to reading more books. Having that goal provided for me helps me read more books and enjoy them more.🖐️My favorite number emoji is probably 5️⃣. In numerology my life path is #5. My understanding is that it’s about freedom, change and independence. That’s very true about my life. Although the change I make are more about me personally rather than physical changes like moving.💜Thank you Winn for another fun video. Love to you and Harry. Take care.
7️⃣ I don’t have a number goal. I just aim to read a variety of books.
7⃣
I read 67 books last year and got 2 bingos! This year I don't have a # goal either - the goal is to read my height in books. I'm only 5'5" so this seems totally attainable!
I read 34, I'm ok with that as I wanted to read fewer but longer books than 2023 when I read 76 but so many tiny books. However I didn't read by whim enough so I slumped more. A change for this year!
I decided to do a low number for goals, 15, 12 to follow the Ben reads good prompts plus 3 other planned book (none of which I've even started yet 🤦♀️ because I can't read to specific books plans)
Although my favourite number is 3 or 9 (because 3 squared but then why not 27, when that would be cubed? I don't know)
How about a games related number emoji! 🎲 Even more relevant since I goty son and husband to roll a die each and the total is how many books I have to read of my physical books and unhaul before buying another physical book as I've been out of book space for a while. Unfortunately they rolled 10, I've read 7 books this year, only 2 of which are ones I physically own, I'm keeping one but have found a couple of accidental duplicates (also have ebook) which I can unhaul, since the rule wasn't that the 10 I read were the ones j had to unhaul, just I had to read 10 and unhaul 10, not having to be the same .
I didn't set any read goals for storygraph this year,it wasn't funny anymore. So this year I m going to read what I have and trying not to buy new books which last for about a month. I'm also trying to borrow more books from the library but if the books aren't in good condition I just can't read them. When it comes to books I want them in very good condition or it distracts me.
I am a simple creature. I see a stats video, i click in.
8️⃣ 140 books read last year but aim to make progress in my series’ in 2025.
1️⃣9️⃣ I read 121 books last year.
I don’t have a favourite number I’m afraid & I read 143.1 books in 2024. The .1 is a novella, I let myself read three novellas to equal one book, so I obviously didn’t get that extra two in to make it equal one book😂
I love your name change. Beautiful name. ❤❤❤
STATS STATS STATS whhhooooooo!
14 couldn't find number emoji. 😂
4:33 if I didn’t already know you were chronically ill this chart would have given it away! We don’t do well around the season changes do we? 😂 And did 2024 maybe smack us in the ass so hard our head is still spinning? 😂 Because SAME. 😅
I read 138 books in 2024. It's not a task for me to read. It's a compulsion.
lol not me pulling up my own Story Graph and comparing numbers. I always hate comparing, because you can't help it with numbers, and I don't want anyone to feel any shame about their own number. I read 256 books in 2024, page count is 82087, and avg days to finish is 3 days. Reading is my primary hobby when I have free time, and I know I'm kinda a freak with high numbers, however this also includes DNF'd books (23 books). Does everyone count those in all the totals? Goodreads and Story Graph don't really give you a choice....
I am a magpie goblin too 🥹 and am running out of space… I feel you
I set my goal of 52 books last year and failed. I read 35 books
💯
❤📚📚❤️
🎱🎰🎲
It makes me very mad that I spend all year reading but bc it is for work or college so it is papers or chapters, not full books, so i cant add them on gr. I need them to add an option to add non book pages
❤
✌️ 🕷️ is my number.
I read 139 books. Had a lot more successes than expected. I'm a whimsy mood reader. I do a few challenges but they're open at reader discretion.
🥧 Can you guess what the emoji is for?

It’s been my philosophy for years and years and years that laziness doesn’t exist and I’ve given long speeches to people about this and I’m firm on it and STILL there are times I’m like “but what if I AM just lazy.” It’s such an insidious awful word!! And it COULD be so nice, like “having a lazy, relaxing Saturday.”
Anyway I love data and listening to you talk so thank you for sharing!!! The best number-related emoji is definitely 💯. Last year I read about 💯 books which was way beyond anything I expected so this year my “goal” or whatever is 50, because while I’d like to read even more this year, it’s like. My whims are fickle, my mind has a brain of its own, and 50 is still a lot for me. If I don’t hit it it’s not a big deal, I just like to put a number in the box and I’ll change it if I feel like it.
Yes it does. I am.lazy and i ruined my life bc im lazy. i just was having a breakdown bc i was supposed to study but didnt start until 3pm and now i am late and idk how to study everything for the exam.
@ if it was laziness you’d be enjoying it and not having a breakdown about it

Last year I read 62 books, but I found myself very unhappy with the quality of my reading. My average rating was miserable. This year I decided to do something different for my reading goal. This year I have a gentle Goodreads goal of 12 books (one per month to keep the habit up) and my main goal, instead of a number, is to read Lord of the Rings. If I get LotR read, my year is a success, regardless of whatever else I do or do not decide to read! 😊
🕔 Don't know -- between 5 and 10? Bad year. No cookie.
