I grew up about 20 minutes from Lewistown and went past the marker many times. We never stopped to read it. Thanks for a great history lesson!

Hi Cliff Lots of people in Essex County Ontario can trace family back to PA. in this time. Simon and James Girty were taken and raised by the Seneca and shannee 1756 to 1764. My kin served in Butlers Ranger under Caldwell and Simon Girty was there scout at Gnadenhtten OH. Blue Lick and Louisville.

Going cross country through Pennsylvania is almost like going back in time. The old houses, old buildings and old towns. Coming from west of the Mississippi I only got to see old Pennsylvania a few times.

Fort Bigham has a fascinating history. The aftermath was maybe just as interesting as the attack itself. Fallout from some of the captive prisoners making it back home led to one of the longest running property disputes - reportedly one of the most drawn out in the history of PA. The descendants of those captive families who returned are still in Juniata County today.

I clicked on as soon as I saw Fort Granville. I can't believe you were right in my neck of the woods, I literally live right up the road from that sign you were reading and even closer to where you walked down to the river.

Another great video. The search for French and Indian Forts is unending. The more you learn, the more you realize how much more there is to learn. An incredible time in our history that must not be forgotten. Thank you Cliff.

Hi Cliff and thank you. Boy, makes ones hair stand up just thinking how brave the settlers were to live in the early USA. Scratching out a living off the land for a wife and family (that would be hard enough by itself) then have to deal with attacking Indians to boot!! My hat is off to them all. My last name and relatives, on my fathers side, came from Ireland in the late 1690,s or so to North Carolina area. My grandmother with her family (mothers side of family) came to PA area in 1863 from Ireland when she was 5.

John Turner was the step father of Simon Girty. There were several stories why they tortured him. Who knows if any were true. This is the fort where Simon Girty was captured as a child. It's a cool story. Sad but really a lot there.

If you check the USGS topo map of Mexico area you will see one small cemetery just west of FT Patterson and another small cemetery on top of a hill just a short ways north of it.Perhaps one of these is the one you spoke of?

Not sure, I read that it was in someone's backyard.

Alfred is correct. I’ve been to both of these and they both look like they are in someone’s backyard just because of the proximity to the homes.
