I’m in zone 10a but we’ve been having a very mild summer 68-73 days and 50-55 nights. I think I’m willing to experiment on planting my brassicas and leafy greens early. But I’ll put them in a partially shaded area that only get 3-4hrs of direct sun. I’m very new and inexperienced but very willing to fail and learn 😊
Fall planting is upon us! This video tells you what crops you can plant in late July and August for a fall harvest and to fill in those empty spots in your garden. Enjoy!
Is it to late fo potatoes, my spring plant look ready, and have many tubers in sprout left over, can I plant in between sweet corn that's almost ready fo picking? Got a lotta learning, and have a little knowledge of cold weather plants
Thanks for the informative video. As far as days to maturity in terms of planting from seed. My experience is the actual harvest time is actually closer to days from germination rather than days from planting. I add 10 days to whatever is listed on the seed packet. Good tip on adding even more days because of less sun during the day in late summer and Fall.
The sunlight levels in the fall really do make a difference, so plant on those extra days. I agree, days to maturity really is days from germination, not planting.
Thanks, I will try some parsley and cilantro tomorrow, because we need these greens a lot. I am a bit in doubt about Basil in Zone 7, may be give it a try
With Basil you will get some to harvest, but not nearly as much as you would have if planted a month ago. Something others have done is bring them inside when the weather gets cold.
As always amazing video! I just palnted a mango seed outside and the little plant is about a foot long right now. And i replanted black pole beans and some are dying but some are starting to flower! How about watermelons? I got one plant growing (no fruits) and 2 others that are not growing but not dying either... just leaving them alone and see what happens. Im in zone 9 (central fl)
I am in zone 9 and I just started my garden beds (2) end of May. When filling in empty spots do I need to do anything to the soil? Add anything? I also have them covered with SPF 50 screens which has really helped with our crazy heat. Thank you so much for helping me become a better gardener.
Hmmm. . . White flies don't usually chew, they suck! If white flies are present you should be able to see the adults and nymphs feeding on the underside of the leaves. You can treat them with insecticidal soap. But you may want to look for other causes as well.
Thank you for this info! Do you have any videos on when to plant squashes or melons? I have some growing already, but wondering if there is still time to put any new squashes in from seed.
Its a little late for carrots in zone 4. You could try some leafy greens like lettuce. Spinach, etc. But for zone 4 you will need to protect them with a cold frame or hoop house.
Thank you, I am in zone 5b, saw in August for fall harvest, can it be applied to my buckets garden too? I have started my brassica early last month as you said in your last video but they are still very very small compared to the ones you show in this video. Can I still plant them in my buckets and expect harvest?
It's getting a little late for Zone 6. I would go with a smaller variety and give it a try. If it doesn't work, then you are only out a few seeds. Experimenting is part of the fun!!
These seeds are from my own past sunflowers, so it's hardly a dent in anything. They're mammoth sunflowers, so they probably won't get that far. I'm planting the biggest one because a friend who was weed whacking for me took out one of the 5 that I had strategically planted, and I thought I'd try again. And yes, this is a big experiment - we'll see how far it goes.
Tomatoes and peppers should always be grown by transplant. Even in the warmer zones. You will have much more success if you get a larger plant in the ground to begin with.
@@StoneyAcresGardening good to know. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your videos. I've been at it about 2 months now. So learning all that I can.
What about sowing / germination time. So 55 days +15+10?? Also if we are trying to stay ahead of the switch out that would require another 2-4seeks of growing time (before planting out)?? So In total about 100 days back from first frost date. Does this make sense? Or am I calculating too much. Trying to get a handle on when I should actually be sowing seeds for planting out as small plants ready to fill in the gaps. Thanks. Hope this makes sense.
For all of the cool season crops you are over thinking it. The 8 weeks before your frost date includes germination time. All of the cool season crops will stand up to frost so you don't need to worry about it. The only crops I would worry about that with would be beans, basil and cucumbers, you might want to account for some germination time with them.
Mary Feist thank you for the info, I didn’t understand it, as we are in Uk we don’t have zones. 😀 so I’ll check out a uk TH-cam vid, god bless thank you.
I use them to put on the end of stakes and poles that I used to hold up bird netting to keep the birds off my berry plants. Here's a link to a video I did about them: th-cam.com/video/b-8_VfeJtWw/w-d-xo.html

Glad I can help!!
I absolutely love your channel. You get straight to the point and as always love your advice.

3 - 4 hours of sun is not enough for broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage. Kale and Collards would do okay with that little light.

fair visa It is slow to germinate, but grows fast! I’m in zone 7 myself and I plant basil in mid late July often with excellent results...

In Zone 9 you might still have a chance with some watermelon, but I would go with a smaller bush variety, maybe some thing like Sugar Baby.
Great Vid! very informative. I looked for the info you referred in your video and did not see the items to print. Like the list you talked about.
The list is in the description. You will have to copy and paste to print, TH-cam didn't let me add a printable. Sorry.
Thank you.
You're welcome!

I always add a couple of inches of compost and mix it in before I replant

@@StoneyAcresGardening my apology...when I saw the highlight; 😲 I forgot to say THANKS ...please forgive me.(😢)
Help! My 3 weeks old tomato seedlings got chewed. I believe it was a whitefly, ya hat can I do?
What can I do? Please help me.

Are you sure it's white flies?
I saw a white insect flying of the seedling not sure but it looks like the leaf is getting old and if I rubbed it the skin of the leaf fall
Thanks!

Do you know what garden zone you live in?
I am in zone 7b will I be able to squueze in straight neck squash?
Maybe! it's getting a little late now, but give it a try!
I’m Zone 4, Michigan. Is there any crop I can still plant now and expect to harvest, besides carrots?

Tomatoes and peppers as transplants, the rest can be direct sown.

Growing zones. Google your zip code and growing zone.

Actually you can use the link below to find your zone in Europe. Most of the UK is either zone 7 or 8.
