    "If you miss your good shot, it turns into a great shot but if you miss your great shot, it's an out shot" Probably the best thing I've ever heard anyone say about tennis.

    More coaches need to adopt this approach. All too often I hear the coaches solely use positive reinforcement. Of course it is important to encourage students, however, constant praise will only ingrain poor behaviours and technique. Keep up the great advice!

    my serve has improved a lot by simply counting. at least 6 of 10 have to go in the box. that creates pressure and concentration and in consequence also the consistency is getting better.

      My racket doesn’t have one of those (sweet spot). Guess I should have spent more on it and less on my outfit, the same one i saw Novak wearing. Sure I get double bageled, but I LOOK like a 5.0 player - as long as I’m not on the court, that is...

    Thanks for these videos. I started watching these a few months ago. started swinging a racquet a month ago. I couldn't even do 2 hit rally on a wall, but now I can hit a 20 or more hit rally with a backhand, forehand, volley and then a power swing combo and all my shots are directional and consistent. my shots are in the court during court practice and my serves are usually 3 for 3. Only 1 month of solid practice everyday took me to a 0.0 player to 3.5? I'm blessed 👑🎾👑🙏

    Hi...great video...definitely struggle with inconsistency...trying to master a defensive shot! I was thinking part of my inconsistency might be a lack of focus. Or at least not focusing on the right thing. I am trying these days to remind myself to watch the ball through contact. I think I'm thinking about my opponent to much, and not enough about the ball. Maybe we should think about tennis as a match against the ball rather than a person. What do you think?

I told my players i want them to focus, not having so much fun in practice cause they will not have as much fun in a match as playing match brings pressure. But it's ok to be relaxed in their mind while staying focus, hit every shot with a purpose. Thanks again.

    Here’s a question I don’t see addressed. How does an aging player adjust to the inevitable loss of mobility? I used to be a solid/strong 4.5 player, and until my mid 50’s could beat guys 25 yrs. younger. But now, at 61, I feel like I’ve lost a few steps and find myself struggling against those only 10 yrs. younger. I have trouble getting to hard wide shots, and really struggle to recover to run back across the baseline. I’m probably now down to 4.0 level but not yet ready to resign myself to doubles or geriatric tennis. Any suggestions? A video addressing this topic might be good. Thanks.

    • @Gezza2515
      @Gezza2515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Peter, at my peak 4.5 but now aged, 59, probably between 4.0 and 4.5. having said that have won twice 55-60 aged local comp in last 2 years so I can relate to your mobility question. Swim Peter. Warm up and warm down. Warm down more important. My Uncle was a champ and I couldn't get a set off him because its about where you place the ball. TTD is right when he says, pull the power but add the consistency.
      To your recovery back to centre after being pulled wide - do what Federer does, slow underspin floater back. Not slice, underspin. This gives you the time you need. If they start to come in for the volley, then (dont hate me) the lift lob.
      Its either that or doubles old boy :-)

    • @PlazaMoon
      @PlazaMoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have similar issues and have been thinking about them lately. Two things to really work on - a well placed serve and a solid aggressive return. You may already have those, but some of us might rate these higher than they really are. When I was playing today I really emphasised deciding where I was going to hit the ball before I hit it. Sounds like a no brainer, but when I lost a poorly played match recently I realised that I wasn't thinking much about ball placement. One more point is try not to be too predictable as this will let your opponent move you around, as opposed to you moving him. Look into 'mirroring' your opponent too. This saves you lots of unnecessary running around.

    • @rbraxley
      @rbraxley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fellow 61 yo here, and you ain’t kidding. My issue is not so much movement, but stamina and dealing with heat. If an opponent keeps me on the move I tire quickly, and then everything starts to break down. I do find myself playing a lot more doubles than I used to, which can be frustrating because I’m only now starting to understand the doubles court. My instincts are all for singles, and I immediately feel more comfortable when facing one opponent. Anyway, any tennis is better than no tennis.

    You see, I do practice the right way, and my consistency is high in both practice and in a match, but I tend to feel rushed while playing a match vs feeling having all the time in the world during practice. I am not sure how to deal with feeling rushed in a match, nor how to practice it! Any thoughts or references where I might look for answers since this is currently my top reason why I loose matches. Thanks!

    • @TotalTennisDomination
      @TotalTennisDomination  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Zack, I would first try to define what is making you feel rushed? Speed of ball, making last minute decisions, opponents or etc.? When try to recreate the situation in practice under pressure. I would need more information on what's causing you to feel rushed before I could give you more specific answers.

    • @zackaaron6487
      @zackaaron6487 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TotalTennisDomination Thanks for your kind reply! I suddenly get the urge to finish the point ASAP! Out of the blue! This causes me to loose my focus and subsequently make an error. This happens during the point, at me serving, even on me returning. The feeling is similar to when you are late getting somewhere, and you have to think about a lot of stuff, e.g. did I take the car keys-checked, where is my wallet-checked, etc., but more often than not, you still forget something, i.e. you lost focus because you were rushed. So, I was wandering how to practice regaining the focus, thus avoiding trying to resolve the feeling occurring during the match. A match time is no place for corrections, practice time is!

    Without a tactical objective linked to a specific shot, technical training is time not well spent. There is a reason the worlds wealthiest large nation is so poorly represented in the top pro rankings, male and female. An American male hasn’t won a Slam in almost 20 years, the Williams sisters carried the torch between them. And no top next gen threats. Outdated coaching methods and approaches, an obsession in instruction and lessons focused on technique is the root cause. You are doing a better job than most at addressing this, there was at least a mention of a target area.
    Sending skills: Path of racket, Angle of racket-face, and Speed of racket .....PAS Principle determines the 5 ball characteristics Height, Direction, Distance, Spin and Speed. A video on this may help athletic players develop better consistency. But none of this will work very well without good reception skills. Unfortunately, REC players lack well developed reception and movement skills so they can’t set up properly to develop and execute good sending skills. They have success only with controlled feeding by coaches in closed training situations. When it comes to live ball, the harsh truth and reality of tennis kicks in. It’s an open sport, unlike golf. Taking a lesson once a week and hitting for a few hours, practicing bad habits undermines development unless reception training and tactical outcomes are also linked to technical development and actively practiced outside of lessons.

    I can point to the reason for most of my misses: I didn't keep my head still during the stroke. Basically, if I could see the ball before it travels to the other side, I had turned my head too soon. And we don't really need to see the ball when it's still in our court.

    Most rec level players practice by simply returning the ball over the net and if it lands “in” then that’s good enough. Or if it’s “out” there’s no accountability. Every return should have an intention of where you want the ball to land, what kind of shape of the trajectory, and spin or lack of it.

    Good video! Quick question: how do you balance technique improvements with consistency? Most of us have technical improvements we can make in our strokes. But if we are always trying to change how we hit and think about technique while playing rather than relying on muscle memory, then it's hard to be consistent.

    • @TotalTennisDomination
      @TotalTennisDomination  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You hit the nail on the head! I think having perfect technique is for the pro's. It takes them usually over a decade of playing to get consistent doing it. If you're a weekend warrior be ok with having ok technique. Invest more time in learning how to play the game using consistency and placement(and knowing when to use power). If I play left handed I have no real stroke production but I can still beat a lot of players because I know how to play and use the court. I could go on forever!! I will be making a video on this topic soon. Thanks(GREAT QUESTION!!)

    After lesson, you can get a rest under the big trees behind the court.

    Ok, but if I hit the ball mid court it is an attackable ball

      It depends at what level you're playing at. I think for more of the majority of players hitting a ball half way behind the baseline and service line is fine. If your playing Division I tennis or pro's you might have to hit the ball a little deeper. If you watch this point you see a mix of good and great shots that land between the service line and baseline th-cam.com/video/k3O5gXuxiQQ/w-d-xo.html Every ball isn't super deep and these guys are at a ok level :)
      Thanks for the question!

    one way to make it accountable...is to count...count how many balls you've put in the box..next time try better....
