The Canon 5D was released back in 2005. At the time, it cost around $3,300. Nowadays you can find it used for around $175. So just what do you get with this 17 year old camera?
Oh my God! My new old (and slightly war-torn) 5D Mk 1 arrived yesterday and I've only shot a handful of photos but the colours, tones and warmth are simply mind-blowing. This result from very minimal hand-on experimentation but having watched a lot of 5D reviews and tutorials. Nikon and Olympus will always be my first loves but .................................
Canon 5D Classic is a genuine photographer's camera. Absence of video option is an advantage. It makes the user a better photographer every day. I bought a used one last year and love it every bit.
It's heavy and load but brilliant. Not had it long but the experience is something different. If you buy one try and get the higher serial numbers as don't suffer from the mirror falling out.
Sure it's not light compared to entry level dslrs or mirrorless but in its category of compact pro level full frame dslrs it's among the lightest... I believe the mkii is a hair lighter, the sony a99 is a bit lighter, but all the nikon offerings in this class are minimum nearly a half a pound heavier I mean I've joked that if someone tried any funny business while I'm out shooting with my d700 I could easily weaponize the camera... My 5d doesn't have quite that same heft that says "this could crack a skull"
I recently used one as my second camera to shoot a wedding. It handled well in mid day sun, and at night during the reception. At the end of the day, I really enjoyed the photos from the 5D than my 5DMKIV (Artistically speaking). It's definitely a professional camera, and you have to dial your settings in to capture the shot correctly the first try; it's not a " underexposing two stops and fixing in post" type of camera.
Hi Steven from what you've said I would say you have keeper. The 5D was way out of my pocket back then when I bought my first camera. Thanks for the review and enthusiasm for the old 5D.
Thanks! I think that’s what I enjoy most about reviewing older cameras. The cost was so high when they were new, but now they’re a lot more accessible.
I own multiple 5D cameras and wanted to say something about the card slot. If you buy an SD>CF adapter - you can easily wack a 128GB SD card in there and it works no problem. ;) Though considering the files are only like 10-12MB each - you'll be storing A LOT of photos.
NO NO NO NO, you have to have an updated firmware version on the camera to use the bigger CF cards. This problem may not show up until you review the images while the card is in the camera, suddenly a problem reading the card, or maybe in some other way. The updated firmware makes the larger cards useable. SO check your firmware version.
Great video thanks a lot been digging out my cameras and looking at cameras online and I really want to get one of the 5D’s just to take out and go and capture nature, thanks again for taking the time to make this video have an awesome day.
I had a similar experience as you with the 5D. So sorry I sold it. I am now exclusively smaller mirrorless APSC Fiji cameras and 1” compacts, but would love having the 5D for an occasional session. Hmm, let’s check out Ebay….
I’ve really been into smaller compact cameras lately as well. I’ve been looking at the Panasonic LX3. It’s got a CCD sensor and it’s only around $70. There’s something so fun about these pocket-sized cameras.
LOL. it seems that we seem to buy the same classic style canon cameras which I like and use all the time,. I don't need them for video because I have a cinema film camera for that reason. I buy these classics because they do one thing well and that is taking great looking photos. I love my 5D classic too. with great glass like L lenses, these cameras really take photos to the next level.
what are your thoughts on upgrading from a rebel xti? I was going to go 5d ii . but then I got looking into older rebels and settled on the SL2... The articulating screen and live view are definitely something that, have me set on the SL2 but full frame seems so tempting...
So, I have a question: when you (and so many others) talk about the colors that the 5D classic renders, how does this work if you don't shoot jpgs? I save jpgs sometimes, just to see if I can find a formula that works better than I can produce with my old copy of lightroom. At what point would I experience 5D Classic colors if I open my raw files in lightroom and turn them into something I might want to print?
Try Canon's DPP. It's their proprietary "photoshop/lightroom" program. It's free, too. If you're running an old version of lightroom, what do you have to lose but a little spare time?
Wow, that’s a really tough one. The 5D Classic looks so amazing but as someone who grew up shooting film, the Nikon D200 does look a little more like film.
If you want an excellent film look in a CCD crop sensor, get a Fuji S5 Pro. Its basically a D200 with the fantastic Fuji Super CCD SR II sensor. One of my favorite sensors ever with excellent skin tones and colors. I just sold my D200 and bought a second S5 yesterday. They are getting harder to find though and prices have shot way up. Be patient on Ebay and you should be able to get one cheap. I scored a refurb with a new shutter and all cleaned up for $199. The 5D is an excellent choice too though. I have one of those as well.
I think the only con with me being the Canon 5D classic in 2022 is finding replacement parts *sigh*. The one I purchased off ebay didn't have a battery door to it but came with a battery grip and such. So (to me) it's bulky. *sigh*
I use the 5d and love It's simplicity. It also forces me to use my brain ant think of the 'Big 3' ISO, shutter speed and aperture. My only problem are the batteries, I have 5, and it's never enough!
thank you for your review! i own a nikon D3100 camera, today i bought a canon 5D classic and i noticed that the 5D was surely less good than the nikon. i don't know much about cameras and i haven't tested the 5D yet since i'm missing the CF card... but would you advise me to keep it anyway? thank you for your answer :)
Most every professional photographer, especially ones looking at this camera, shoot in manual mode and know what ISO they should be using. You can also use a light meter. This is definitely not a camera for those who like to use auto settings. Might want to check out the Rebel line.
Thanks for the great video! I hope the war in my country will end and I will be able to buy this wonderful camera to explore the world of photography. N
The Classic is my walk around camera with a 40mm pancake lens. It’s a great combo! Also, I have a 64 gig CF card and it works with that size.
That’s a great combination. I love that 40mm f2.8.
固件是1.1.1吗
I went through 3 different 5D classics till I found one that focused correctly. I still have one and use it time to time. It's an amazing camera.
Unlucky! I've been using the same one for over 2 years, still focuses properly on all lenses at the moment.

That's a very clean looking 5d you were able to get your hands on there. Pretty rare.
It was my first Canon camera. As you said it, great color output on the RAW files. I like the color grading of your videos. Thanks for sharing!

My fav is the original Canon GX7. Great photos and 1080,60p! Who among us needs more?
I would love a canon 6d Review

Great video! I have a quick question. Which would you buy a 5d Classic for $200 or a 6d mark one for $400? Thanks for you valuable input in advance.
6d also produces special look but differently than 5d. 6d also has some advancements e.g. 20mp, probably better af, et cetera.

New photographer. Just bout the 5D. when you say it only holds 3 FPS 17 Raw Fames. Does that mean the camera only can take 17 pictures in raw?
Which do you think is better for pleasing good quality film like images? A Canon 5D or a Nikon with CCD sensor (D200 or other)?
Wow, that’s a really tough one. The 5D Classic looks so amazing but as someone who grew up shooting film, the Nikon D200 does look a little more like film.

i think the d700 might be a ccd sensor camera.
I just made a short video on mine too. Picked it up for $130 with a 50mm f1.4 lens! So many good deals to be had on old, pro DSLRs right now.
@landodream Thats a great deal! I just paid $233 on ebay with tax and shipping,2 batteries, Charger and a 64Gb Cf express card and the 50mm 1.8 lens.
@@yosoyyo1899 nothing wrong with that, either!

the battery door is probably stored in the battery grip -it is typically designed that way.
i bet you have that door !
my 5D classic works with a 64GB CF card without issues
you must have the latest firmware version
@@RicardoPestana, indeed
Kindly askin' to share your colour settings. They are 150% film-like. Thanks, MAN !
Hi Steven, thanks for this review.
I'm using a mid 2011 Imac.
What's the best way to get the images from the CF card onto your computer ?
Thanks.
probably a cf card reader
@@zacharyarakawa2401 Thanks

if you haven't tested it then how are you able to judge it as 'surely less good'?
Right on brother
Do you know where to find the firmware 1.1.1 for the 5D classic? Canon’s site has a broken link.
The bad is it does not have auto iso, that's a deal breaker for me.
Most every professional photographer, especially ones looking at this camera, shoot in manual mode and know what ISO they should be using. You can also use a light meter. This is definitely not a camera for those who like to use auto settings. Might want to check out the Rebel line.
My grail DSLR!
Great content. Keep up the great work!!
Hallo,suuupeeeer presentation ! Do u speak GERMAN ? Congrats 4 this presentation !

it is still decent
4 GB is enough,
Love it
What lense did you used for the pictures in this video?
A lot of those were on the Canon 24mm f2.8.
@@steve_heise Thanks! Is good to know.
Thanks for the great video! I hope the war in my country will end and I will be able to buy this wonderful camera to explore the world of photography.

Which camera did you use to shoot this prof?
Bro just saw in KEH 137 bucks marked ugly!
а какой объектив использовали?
in the video he had a canon 24mm on the canon body.
Thx☺️I love my 5 D 👍🏻
Let's make CCD sensors great again.
It's CMOS , no CCD
Hamach canon 5d secod
In the movie Skyline 🏙 They run up to the roof to shoot pictures of the Aliens 👽 using the a 5D classic...Hows that for street cred?
