I know this is an old video but if you have thin leather like this, Can you interface it with another thin piece?

Yes you totally can. You can braid with a thin piece then using glue and either a metal roller or a smooth faced hammer glue it to your other piece and then flatten it out. I’d suggest the hammer for the braiding and the roller for the leather
