Every time I listen to Ocean, no matter what version, I don't ever feel quite satisfied at the end. I always want to hear more. It's just like "keep playing man. Please don't ever stop"
It’s because he builds it up so much and is peaking right as it finishes. I wish he hit that chord progression at the end for a touch longer. Literally my favorite part
All I can say in a world of disappointments and negativity his music shines a light on a better and brighter day. I spent 11 and a half months in Afghanistan and his music and this song helped me make it through some tough times he reminded me there is a better day tomorrow no how many tomorrow's you have to endure so to John butler I say thank you
I think the mistakes and the recording hum are an extra bonus to this beautiful piece of music. The ocean swings and sways and crashes. It moves and grows, swells and fades. It's a song of triumph and hope, failure and agony. It's an astonishing portrait of life and love and everything we experience in between. Open your mind, enjoy, and be thankful that this gift has been given to us.
Yeh, he was off on this night, ive heard him nail this song in other videos. But the mistakes let us know he's only human and to not treat him like an idol.
If you spend an afternoon watching all of the videos of this song, in the order in which they were recorded, and then read a bit up on it, the answer to that question becomes clear: He definitely didn't sit down and write it all in one go. It mostly likely started as a little jam he made up when he was busking - just a few riffs and chord patterns he could string together and probably play for hours at a time. Then he started to structure it, add bits and take bits away.
he's been jamming this song since '98. The development since then has been tremendous. I love watching a song evolve over time -- live music/Improvising for days (or in this case years).
one punch man johnbutlertrio.com/ocean-2012/ I don't believe it necessarily took JB 19 years to write Ocean. What I believe the previous commenter was implying is that John's relationship with this arrangement is constantly evolving, and John himself does not consider it a finished work (he says that in a live recording while introducing the song; I believe it is on the Live at Red Rocks album. It may also be on the Tin Shed Tales recording).
Well, honestly, as a musician, sometimes you don't really write songs. What I mean is that you don't feel writing it. You feel like the song has always been there and you're just discovering it, the song kind of writes itself. It may seem silly but I'm serious. And when you find a song like that, believe me, you're the one who's the most impressed as it's coming straight from your soul and you didn't know it was there, you feel like the song is revealing some unknown area in your head :)
That 100% makes sense to me.... Whenever I pick my guitar up sometimes it just flows from picking up guitar to having a complete tune almost in the blink of an eye and my brain just goes wtf but it leaves my heart and soul smiling knowing that something truly special has just happened.
This is very true. I have discovered one song just as you described here and it is by far the best music that ever came out of my soul. I had no idea I could "create" something that good.
its his song and he can play it as he wishes. I love how every version ive seen him play has its own identity and he just doesnt give a flying fuck he gets right into it.. play on john!!
I wonder if in the future, when music hits are probably gonna made by machine learning algorithms, someone will still listen to this and will show the others what real music is...
saw him perform this song live at Big Day Out in Sydney in 2011 - highlight of the afternoon for us, we just stood there grooving with our drinks totally chilling out to the most awe inspiring sound to ever come from one person and a guitar!! Best ever!
I belive you can't decide to sit down and write this kind of music, but sit down and start your sound meditation and try to listen to what happens inside yourself and follow the flow fo the music. Hpefully it will come out by itself when you become empity enough to allow the music flow through you. Music is all around us, we just have to sit down and listen.
I started listening to John after I saw him in the Live8 concerts. I have been completely hooked ever since. Ocean blew me away the first time I heard it on the Live at Lollapalooza disc. I agree that I am a little disappointed at the end, because I want it to keep on going.
There is no one best ever, everyone interprets it differently. Some versions may have a special meaning to them, there are different variations of it played. There are many reasons someone can make an argument for what they thinking’s the best version. Personally I love the red rocks version and what he has to say b4 playing it. To each their own, it’s an epic song and journey everytime it’s played.
People are complaining about mistakes, I'd like to see them try to play this. Imagine how tiring it would be. If you complain about mistakes then you obviously don't play an instrument.
The mistakes are because this piece is very difficult since it is an improv song. It's easy to do when you do it the same but not this song. (When you remove your comment instead of edit D: )
Kayla Marshall there are no mistakes when it is your music only revisions everyone I listen to him play it live you can feel a different emotion in it which makes it a new experience everytime you listen
He's one of the beautiful people and we need as many as we can get . So stop with the bad fires and start feeding the good ones. This piece of music should touch your soul . OH fuck it whats the point ?
You play around until you get something you like. No one understands the creative process because it's complex and doesn't work the same for everyone. John just found a way that works for him.
Can you do the world a favour and re-title this video so the youtube algorithm will pick it up.. Been a huge fan of JBT, and this song especially, for 11 years and this is the first time seeing this version :o
a song like this isn't just written it's experienced. there was probably never a time where he sat down and said," I'm going to write a song.", this song probably evolved from his experiences in life. I've seen him perform this song many times here on TH-cam, I've never had the honor of seeing him live sadly, but every video I've seen the song has changed you can still recognize it as The Ocean, but its different.
I'm looking for the live version where before he plays he talks about how he made this because he wanted to speak to people even if they spoke a different language or something like that. Please help
Ok? Don't know what that means? That's a pretty derogatory term to use. Put on some decent headphones and crank it. Listen to the very beginning before he starts to play......again @ 00:25 when he retunes a string..... again @ 00:51. You may hear very slight buzzing sound when his hands leave the strings? That's what I'm talking about, ungrounded 60hz. It runs throughout the recording causing other facets of acoustic and electronic distortion. It's just my opinion, we all have one. Don't get too bent outta shape. If you think it's the best that's fine, I get it. It doesn't take away from John's ungodly talent or music ability. Just an observation, I spent too much time working in the business, I'm an engineer and probably makes me way too critical. Hope you enjoy his next version? I can't wait, he's such an incredible joy? Peace.
I think the reason this song always changes is he never thought when he "wrote" it, and doesn't when he plays it...it just kinda flows outa him naturally after YEARS of experimenting and playing in open C
Every time I listen to Ocean, no matter what version, I don't ever feel quite satisfied at the end. I always want to hear more. It's just like "keep playing man. Please don't ever stop"
I felt it was a tad too long.
It’s because he builds it up so much and is peaking right as it finishes. I wish he hit that chord progression at the end for a touch longer. Literally my favorite part
Like ocean is a never ending or feels like we'd like this song to be like this
All I can say in a world of disappointments and negativity his music shines a light on a better and brighter day. I spent 11 and a half months in Afghanistan and his music and this song helped me make it through some tough times he reminded me there is a better day tomorrow no how many tomorrow's you have to endure so to John butler I say thank you
I only hope he sees my message and knows how much his music means to me and helped me through some tough times
no
John butler ocean studio

nice one man

Well that was very well written, and exactly what i was thinking listening to him, thank u for your comment

@myawesomequest
It took him 19 years to write, and it's not even finished yet. The last performance before he dies will be the finished version.
where did u find that info???

He better not fu** it up. ;)
@@dzikiwazon It won't matter if he does.
Mistakes are only made by those who tried and succeed and this proves at its best. Hats off john.
Mistakes? Yeah. Great musician? Hell Yeah!! I like seeing the mistakes. Makes me feel feel a little less stupid playing.

Playing like this is a gift I don't care what anyone says !!
You can learn to be this good no matter how hard you try!!

this music is not for my ears, it's for my soul
Can you see the waves, the sun, the caustics on the turquoise water's surface, the blue sky and the birds' echoes in the immensity ?
I’m waiting for the guitar to burst into flames. Wow
Simply incredible. I've had the pleasure of hearing John Butler live when he came down to Singapore in April 2012. It was an unforgettable concert.
❣ lucky you ❣
Once again this man puts PASSION back into music!

his tattoos on his forearms are incredible. i think theyre so cool.
and this is one of the best versions of this song ive heard.

Ocean played live at Federation Square in Australia is the best recording of that song

California Roots festival is the best live version IMHO
how does this even remotely deserve any dislikes?
John Butler huh? I think I will remember his name! nice blend of sounds all flowed into one masterpiece...
Thanks
My guitar give me a dirty look after I watched this 🥺

njl4515 I understand that but I personally love this version. i get what you mean though.
people are pointing it out because the title says "perfect recording". also not that bad once you start experimenting with air tapping.
I cannot stop listening to this! whata amazing, beautiful talent!
AMAZING - a phenomenal artist and a fantastic live recording. Well done "Saints" !!
By hearing this pure and beautiful song I have learned more about myself.
Beautiful recording, just the right amount of compression if I am right! Brilliant!
2:47 What a killer natural harmonic OMG
i wish it were still that way
He is amazing!!! Wow!! What a gift.
This is my Favorite live take of Ocean that JB has done! Just Beautiful!
and it's great to see how this song evolved over time. compare this to earlier recordings...fascinating
one of the most important songs in my life, and yes Zak Casca i totally agree with you! so on same page! Maybe even better then when i saw it live!

I really enjoyed watching this, great guitar player, that start is amazing....
How does everybody stay so quiet?! I would've been crying this is so beautiful.
Believe it or not, that was even more incredible live! #wasthere
Amazing. Truly amazing. Thanks for posting!
Gives me shivers everytime!

Amazing work!
I love the look on his face right as he's about to go after a really difficult riff, like "screw it, let's go!" You can tell he loves playing.

If you tried playing this would you not make any? Besides the song is how he plays it on the day, and all versions are perfect.
simply amazing
This was not his best performance of this song but it's still amazing how He plays it!
What would you say is the best performance
@@rinzler7578 check out the max sessions 2014 performance, as I remember that is a flawless performance
Thanks Zac :)
One word. Perfect :')
Lets focus on who we love and NOT who we hate, lets fix the world
You're absolutely right. I am a musician as well, and I support your idea.

The relative minor would be a minor, before the capo on the fourth fret, considering it's in open c tuning
