Didn't have enough time to fully listen back through this to make sure there weren't any major errors/glitches that occurred while the video was being recorded, so if there are I'll probably take this down and re-upload it. That aside, hope y'all enjoy o7 Some notes & trivia: - I brought this up in the video, but the very earliest Atmospheric Jungle tracks, like "Demons Theme" or even LTJ Bukem's remix of "Atlantis," are generally more similar to Breakbeat Hardcore than to Jungle. I.e., they used slower tempos and didn't chop the breaks as much. Because of this, I initially intended to list Atmo Jungle as being a sub-genre of both Jungle and Breakbeat Hardcore, but I ultimately decided that might be a bit confusing. - Speaking of Atlantis, "Apollo Two" is a trio comprising of LTJ Bukem and two of his friends. From what I found on discogs, it was the only song the other two members of the trio ever produced. Likely because of this, Bukem's remix of Atlantis is instead sometimes credited as him just being the one who made the track. - "Motions" by Future Engineers was made in the late 90s but never released due to them losing the original stems/project file and being unable to properly master the version they had for a vinyl release. To this day it has had no official release, but they did send it out as a free download for people on their mailing list around the end of 2023 iirc. I'm not on their mailing list tbh, but someone posted the text of that email along with a dropbox link to DL the song in r/atmosphericdnb, which is how I got it. - I wanted to include some tracks by Voyager in the Atmo DnB section, but couldn't find a good place to slot something in, and also didn't want to make the mix absurdly long. So y'all should go check out his music. "Apollo" is a classic one from the 90s, but I really like the self titled record he released on Tempo Records back in 2021.
1:15:40 is a verified breakdancing cat moment 🔥🔥 (alongside the moment I was first exposed to Drum and Bass and began a deep dive into it and the other break-driven genres)
A real masterpiece, thank you. Every single jungle fan in the world should know about this, it feels great to have ppl like you making mixes of REAL high quality jungle.
Serious tunes mate, let's keep this music alive. Well done for taking the time to break down the sub genres, a lot of kids ask. I went to Calibre & Bailey last Friday. 3hr set each. Bailey went last at 3am. First tune: Your Love by Frankie Knuckles (1987!). Then he played a chronological retrospective of house to breaks to hardcore to jungle to DnB. HEAVY Played Music by Bukem and even Mr Kirk's Nightmare I went with a 28 yr old Kiwi who didn't recognise any of the tunes, just kept saying, "this is amazing" Disclaimer: I'm 48 and started going out in 93. Got a job, marrried w/2 kids but never lost the love for this music. They said it would never last. Well, 30 years later WE STILL HERE 😎
man and here ive been using atmospheric jungle and atmospheric dnb interchangeably, like a chump. Love these longform essays, it really reminds me of the original Ishkur's Guide to EDM
Tbf, a lot of people back in the day would've been using them interchangeably as well. Which, considering that some of the songs from the 90s I used in the Atmo DnB section were released only a year after some of the ones I used in the Atmo Jungle section, it's not surprising that it's a distinction born out of hindsight.
At some point yes, and I'm also thinking about trying to cover Ragga DnB and Raggacore (Ragga Breakcore) in the same video. But as things currently stand, that video is a long way off from me being able to make it. I might have barely enough Ragga Jungle in my library to put together a decent mix, but not enough Ragga DnB. For the Raggacore mix I'll probably try and find a Breakcore DJ to do a guest mix for that sectino of the video, and I'm kinda considering doing the same for Ragga DnB.
It's mostly just stuff I already know, but I'll do some research just to make sure I'm not blatantly misrepresenting anything and/or to find good songs to include. For this video I don't think I did much research outside of what albums I should recommend in the intro, but I know I did a decent amount of research for the Techstep & Neurofunk video. That was partly to find examples to use, and partly to make sure I was including tracks in the right section, 'cause a lot of people in old forum threads considered tracks like Konflict - Messiah to be Techstep while people nowadays consider it early Neurofunk.
Yeah pretty much. First started listening to DnB around ~2013 or so, shortly after getting into EDM & Dubstep since that stuff had made its way into the mainstream at around that time. Then I started getting into Jungle around 2015/2016. Most of my knowledge about specific genres & sub-genres is stuff I've learned through exposure, but I've honestly never really done any deep dives. So like, I know enough to recognize specific styles (for the most part), but some of the songs I've used as examples in these videos are stuff I'd never heard prior to me looking for songs to use as examples.

i am curious, are you planning to do one for ragga jungle?

Do you research while making the video or did you already sort of knew this stuff?
It's mostly just stuff I already know, but I'll do some research just to make sure I'm not blatantly misrepresenting anything and/or to find good songs to include. How have you learned so much about these incredibly specific genres? Is it just years and years of experience?
Yeah pretty much. First started listening to DnB around ~2013 or so, shortly after getting into EDM & Dubstep since that stuff had made its way into the mainstream at around that time. Then I started getting into Jungle around 2015/2016.
