hi, thank you so much for this video, I have 3 rings that combine into 1 ring, all size 9, and I want to size down to 5.5 or 6 on my own or with help, I have nearly all the needed items, tools, etc, except the ring measuring/sizing gauge, where would I find one of those?

I am so loving that you're making these videos. Thank you! I am looking for the ring bending pliers like yours but can't find them. I see similar, but maybe they don't make them any longer? Also, Does this ever distort the setting when you're trying to resize?

Hey Debbie, Thanks so much! Here is my amazon affiliate link to those pliers. These are the ones I use. amzn.to/2EQInjt
The only time I have found that the ring will distort is if you are sizing down two sizes or more. I usually let the customer know there ring maybe slightly egg shaped. Everyones fingers are oval not round anyway, so some times it is more comfortable to wear.
My only warning would be if the ring has a design around it wrap the ring in a polishing cloth and then use the pliers. This will help to protect the design. If you ever need tool lists I have them at the site. gotcharocks.com/
That being said I always love to hear from everyone out there in our great big world :) Hope this helps and don't hesitate to write if you need any more info.
      All the best, Michael

Thank you to everybody who has commented so far and thanks for watching.
If there are any specific question that you would like me to answer just let me know.
Every ring is a little different and there always seems to be a wildcard ring that can give us some trouble,
So just let me know and we will figure it out :)

Can you say a little more about what you were doing to measure on the side of the ring mandrel? How about one with a stone already in place, too?

      Hello Dori, Great question.
On the side of most ring mandrels you will see a measurement gauge on the side. They are usually numbered 1 through 15 or so, and they have a little dash mark next to the numbers. Each dash is around 2mm apart and represents one size. If you don't have a gauge on the side of the mandrel know that 2mm = one ring size. Use you divers or calipers to measure the right amount and then remove it from the ring.
If you have a stone set in your ring that cant take any heat such as turquoise or maybe a birthstone. The stone will have to be wrapped in a heatsink. This could be in the form of putting the stone into a pan of water or a wet paper towel with only the solder seam showing. This can be a very tricky job. You have to have a very hot flame and get in and out fast and by fast I mean seconds.
I will try to shoot a video showing a few methods of sizing with stones. I have had great luck doing this but I will have to show you in a video for it to make sense. Please stay tuned and I will put the video out as soon as I can. I will throw a few other trick that may help as well.
Thanks again for the comment, great question.
      All the best, Michael

Hi can you resize a rose gold plated ring at home? No jeweler will do it for me and a precious friend gave it to me. Thanks for any help you can give me. Blessings

      Hello MrsZoey,
I had a friend once say "Anything can be accomplished with enough time and money." That being said it is going to be tough. Anytime you have a ring that is plated pretty much insures that you are going to need even more equipment than most jewelry studios normally have. Rose gold platting is going to be rarer platting solution to have on hand.
So back to your original question. Do you need to size it larger or smaller?
If it needs to be LARGER by a little bit...say half a size or so. You maybe able to put it on a ring mandrel and tap it up with a plastic hammer. This is done by gently taping the ring evenly around the ring until it reaches the size you need. Sometimes the platting can crack a little but should still look pretty good. The biggest danger is having the ring crack. That is why it shouldn't be stretched too much. Make sure it isn't a hollow ring. If it is don't touch it. its destruction will be all guarantied.
If you need to size it SMALLER get a something called a ring guard. This fits inside the ring and takes up any extra space, thus making it smaller. You may have to use the gold color. Here is a ring guard I found on Amazon amzn.to/2VxdWUj
Last option is to where it on a chain or be willing to put hundreds into having it done by a shop equip to handle it.
Okay, Sorry this was such a long answer but it is not an easy answer. I hope this sort of helps. Let me know.
      All the best, Michael Seiler

JC Penney sizes plated rings. They ship it off and it takes a few weeks but it's worth it.

Thank you so much for such a quick reply and a thoughtful answer. It is to make it smaller, so I will check into the ring guard. I saw someone use epoxy or hot glue gun too on you tube, but not sure if this would ruin it too? Do you know if that would work? Enjoy your day

I would probably just go with the ring guard. At least you know you can remove it or adjust it. I am not a big fan or glue or epoxy. I have seen people use string but it does get dirty over time. Have a great day:)

Thanks for the video. Great tips! I have a question for you about casting rings in a variety of sizes. Do you have a few standard sizes that you cast in and then resize as needed, or do you make rings in all common sizes? I'm casting more but find the number of sizes required to be overwhelming. What works for you?

Stephen Capp Hey Stephen, I make most of my production rings in a size 7.5. This allows me to size up and down depending on the finger size. Finger sizes have changed over the past 23 year. I find that 6, 7 and 8 are popular sizes. If you are casting I would recommend sizing them in the wax before casting. But if you are making a bunch for a show shoot for that 7.5 and take it from there.
