Been playing jazz for a few years now, after over a decade of metal. The best advice I can give for improvising is to sing to yourself as you’re playing, as it will break you out of the arpeggio boxes and get you only thinking about the melody. You shouldn’t be running arps and scales in your brain like a cyborg, or else it’ll come out sounding uninspired or forced. Your main goal should be to play melodies that tie every chord together into something memorable. And more than that, listen to what’s going on in the song, and react based on that, cause other jazz guys will always try to test your competence by throwing substitutions or different voiced chords at you to fuck you up. Beyond that, practicing arps, chromatic enclosures, and learning vocab will just keep giving you more weapons in your arsenal. All the technical stuff is just to make your singing ideas sound more unique.
i really think the best advice for a fledlging jazz player is to transcribe, transcribe, transcribe. All of the best guys in any genre have that in common, and even more so in jazz, espically for someone who hasnt played much of that style before
Once you've started to lose your mind is when your journey into jazz truly begins, the next step is feeling above all other genres until you transcend above playing a coherent song at all
Oi dudes ya want a funky psychedelic rock band I'm 100% recommending psychedelic porn crumpets any of they're songs are absolute bangers but I'd start you off with cornflake and if that isn't your thing then cubensis lenses
Just do passing tones, highlight the chord changes and mess with the melody. Honestly you’re already better than most of us already. The piano, bass and horns just make us sound better.
Dude, I have had the same struggle for years. My guitsr teacher preaches arpeggios, hitting the changes. I just can’t get my head around them. How the fuck do you think that fast?
Fun video Judy. What flavor are your pouches? Not for me but I remember my friend really being into a sour apple flavor when we were younger. He’s dead now. Unrelated. Kinda. So, you still doing lessons? I emailed a couple times. Guess you’re full up on students.
Uncle Judy I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for theese videos, as they are helping me A LOT to cope with depression and hard times, and you motivated me to start my own guitar channel. Thank you so much, your channel is awsome!🤘🏻
I've been going through this same thing for the last 10 months and I'm not nearly close enough to being confident. I had 20 years playing prior so that's similar.

Jazz kinda rhymes with chess. Which is accurate. Jazz is the chess of the music world.
