Laser Fix Tweak in Original Xbox - works for any CD DVD Bluray based system

  • I was looking on Google and TH-cam for a good laser tweak guide and just came to video after video of some random dude rambling on in a dark room with a shaky ass camera for 5 minutes before getting to the point.
I know based on some of my videos that this could be seen as a bit hypocritical but when it comes to such a basic thing I think a couple of minutes is good enough, so I shot and aggressively edited this down to minimise rambling (well until we got to the end, and also in this description).
The theory in this tweak will work in any disc based system, you just need to crack it open and find the adjustment pots.
A good multimeter is also a must so you know how far you've changed the value, going too far will kill your laser but it's probably not working anyway so what have you go to lose?
Before you try this tweak have a look to see how much replacement parts are, for example a new laser pickup for a Samsung Xbox drive is about £20 (June 2018) so I knew going in what kind of costs I was looking at.
If you're unable to find spare parts or they are really expensive then I recommended handing the work over to someone more experienced to carry out.

You aren't even showing the part you are adjusting, it's off camera

It's literally the only potentiometer on the side of the laser. You have to break the glue bond holding the adjustment solid using a little acetone.

Did it work better after the mod. You left that out. Also you’re very right. Cartridge is king. I love my carts. Just so glad that mobile gaming is still holding onto physical media too. I live the DS, 3DS and PSP vita formats.

This was more the theory of the laser tweak rather then a specific fix for this console. The laser in this drive was already dead.

My laser doesn’t seem to have a pot like that, only two smaller ones to the underside any advise? Toshiba samsung drive.

What is the minimum safe value to set the resistance at for that particular drive you have in your video?

I have trouble reading the Halo games on my second hand Xbox. Halo CE reads about 50% of the time, Halo 2 about 20%. So i cleaned the laser, didn't help. When i checked with a multimeter, the pot had a value of 1,231 Ohms. So i lowered it to about 1,090 (0.141 Ohms less than before). Pretty much same result as before. BUT i ordered a copy of Doom 3 (great game btw), and it reads EVERY SINGLE TIME. What should i do? All 3 games have a pretty much scratch-free disc. If Doom reads all the time, is there something wrong with the Halos?

      A mystery.

God mine is the exact same way. Reads a scratched CE disk 95% of the time, spotless Fable disk 90% of the time, and Halo 2 75% of the time despite being in poor condition. But CoD Finest Hour, Splinter Cell, and a few others are a fight to run.

Where's the points to check it at?! You failed to show that!

You check resistance at the potentiometer directly, they're small but on the side of the adjustment screw.

What type of tool is required to adjust the potentiometer? It is very small and I can't tell what type of tool I need to adjust it? Small flathead? Small Phillips?

    • @colinheacock6033
      @colinheacock6033 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I was able to use a small flat screwdriver for glasses in case anyone else is wondering. I did find it hard to get a clear reading on the resistor using the multimeter so I'm not really sure if I adjusted it to much in which case the laser could burn out. For now it is working. Good luck to anyone else who wants to tackle trying this.

you dont need to change the board on an og xbox when you change the dvd drive. tjey are all interchangable. xbox 360.. the dvd drive is married to the console... But not on the og.
