OVERVIEW
Eliot Smith Dance, in collaboration with Jason Thompson of Sound Ideas Media, proudly presents PITMAN ReDiscovered, a stunning new contemporary dance film commissioned by Woodhorn Museum with the kind permission of the Ashington Group Trustees. This innovative piece reimagines Eliot Smith's acclaimed stage work, PITMAN, transforming it into an experience that brings six Ashington Group paintings to life through film and dance.
At the heart of this production is Woodhorn Museum, a former colliery and a site integral to the Ashington Group’s history. Recorded on location, the film breathes new life into the miners' artistic legacy, intertwining the community's rich heritage with the raw power of contemporary dance. Through Eliot Smith’s striking choreography and storytelling, combined with Jason Thompson’s beautiful videography, PITMAN ReDiscovered captures the essence of creativity born from resilience.
This film marks a grand finale to Woodhorn Museum’s year-long programme of exhibitions and events celebrating the 90th-anniversary of the Ashington Group, while simultaneously launching a North East stage tour of PITMAN in February. With its bold fusion of movement, music, and history, PITMAN ReDiscovered offers a fresh lens through which to view the Woodhorn Museum and the enduring influence of these remarkable artists.
