    • @5RndsFFE
      @5RndsFFE ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If by armour you mean MBTs and IFVs, Ukraine needs it because it’s a country in the continent of Europe, it’s connected by large, almost uninterrupted land avenues to its potential and current adversaries I.e Russia.
      Australia is an island continent, we have no land connection to any other country let alone adversary. MBTs have a large logistics train to support and deploy especially by amphibious means. We would be far better served with amphibious IFVs and light tanks with similar capabilities.
      The Stryker MGS the US is phasing out would be ideal to replace our Abrams and ASLAVs.

    ANZAC DAY is a line for all true blue Australians to draw in the sand.
    It should unlawful for any person to conduct a “Welcome to Country” ceremony on ANZAC DAY.
    Ex-service and current members of the Australian Defence Forces should not be publicly treated as if their just foreign soldiers standing upon the soil on which they were born.
    Welcome to Country messaging on ANZAC DAY is a public insult to these men and women who have served past and present and to those that have fallen for the sake of all Australians.
    The laws in Australia which restrict and prohibit certain activities on ANZAC DAY need to be updated in respect of due honour and observance from all Australians on ANZAC DAY.

    James Brown's book "ANZAC's Long Shadow" (2014) highlighted the massive gap between Political and Military communications especially when it concerns the needs ADF require. "Although it is customary for politicians to speak of defence and national security as the first priority of any government, knowledge of defence policy and military matters within parliament is extremely low." (p.76) From my own experiences serving 18 years in the Army, we would be occasionally be subjected to "Dog and Pony shows" where equipment would be scrubbed to inspection standards, hand picked the best in condition. Soldiers would be "Dirked" to get dressed up like mannequins on display with their kit, while others rehearsed a scenario and showed a demonstration for the Pollies. You could see the doe eyed look on their faces and constant head nods as they were escorted around by a small group of officers explaining the tools and equipment knowing full well none of them had a clue of what was being told to them. There was never a critical word said during these events, probably because of exactly that; they wouldn't understand. The Military portfolio is one of the most complex one's parliament needs to manage, much like health however, it's the one that often gets pollictians with the least amount of familiarisation with basic concepts and language of war making the big decisions on it. This issue is not new and has plagued the ADF for many a decade. Political debate on defence has and continues to have a serious lack of critical analysis of soldiering and operations.

    ANDREW HASTIE is 100% correct. We should be doing exactly what Japan is doing and that is rapid rearmament. The Albanese government is placing Australia in a dangerous position every day it delay’s rearmament. Doubling the defence budget from a pathetic 2% to 4% is the minimum starting point and a very simple decision, yet they are incapable of making this decision. This will go down as one of the worst governments in Australia’s history.

They are far better equipped and trained than the ADF for such contingencies. They do however need to be adequately staffed and supported - by state governments.

Unfortunately, our society today is built up around a politically correct, woke, feminist and the left wing. I’m confident in saying though that if the shit hit the fan, there would be plenty of people signing up. Just look at what happened when we went into East Timor, there was the potential for that to go side ways very quickly with Indonesia. Defence force recruiting were swamped with people calling in and wanting to join up.

How many millennials do you think could actually pull a trigger to cause harm to someone? There would still be plenty of younger and older Aussies that would more than likely sign up. And as for conflict with Indonesia, well the Australian Government at the time under King John Howard, told the Indonesian Government we would be sending a single F111 over East Timor (Unarmed) to take real time photo reconnaissances for the Australian forces. The Indonesia Government said they would shoot it down if we sent it. We sent it anyway and just as a precaution, the RAAF had 2 F18’S on the ground, bombed up ready to deploy if the Indo’s fired, of which they didn’t. Conflict with Indonesia was a real possibility back then, the only reason it didn’t happen was because we had US and other UN forces as part of INTERFET. Once again, you can google all that to see if I’m talking BS or not or that I actually know what I’m talking about as I’m educated, unlike you.

      @@apothecarymaybe3402 First and Second world wars were made up mainly of Regular Army Personnel and Young Male Volunteers yes Aboriginal Australians also served
      Conscription came into being around 1964 there were conscripts young males 18 yrs selection conditions were under a Birthday Ballot and after basic training most went to Vietnam and fought along side regular ADF service men.
      I suggest look up the battle of Long Tan 1966 most of Us will Honor those Guys Tomorrow ANZAC Day

    Forward installation defenses need cover against attack airborne and land based attacks .. defensive strategy .. Israels Dome against missile strikes, then anti aircraft and shipping cruise missiles .. for surface vessels and finally land based military vehicle forces against ground forces which judging by this report will leave ADF ground forces short of vital equipment .. a Government Robbing Peter to Pay Paul.. Short changing Australia Defense a known specialty of Stephen Smith.. I'd say is being Welcomed in Beijing .. thanks to Socialist / Communist Labor

    The best thing we as a country could do is raise taskforce groups that incorporate all corps.

  • @indoman8887
    @indoman8887 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Iraq and Afghanistan experiences are irrelevant in this instance, especially in the case of Australia, because we in the main, deployed special forces with some light armor support, not a full sized, integrated task force as in Vietnam. I am a veteran (infantry) of that shambles of a war and at that time the M113 APC’s were handy, but the Centurions couldn’t get to where they could have helped all the time. If we are required to deploy our new missile units into various parts of South East Asia some time in the future, infantry fighting vehicles will not be a much use for the following reasons: (1) Asia still has massive amounts of jungle cover and all the major roads are carved out of that jungle, so they are easily blocked. The use of precision weapons, including man portable anti tank weapons (as shown in Ukraine) would lead to the decimation of any type of vehicle trying to move along those roads. (2) Most of the flat and rolling landscape where infantry fighting vehicles would have room to maneuver is covered with rice paddy, so that again channels them into kill zones. (3) I think we can reasonably confidently say that there will be no more Iraqs or Afghanistans, because no American politician would have the courage to get involved in something like that again, because they would have a revolt on their hands. The American people have had enough of these “forever wars” and that means we would not be galloping off to support these misadventures. (4) If we end up fighting in South East Asia, we will be fighting a peer enemy and we will not have unrestricted air superiority, as has been the case in all of our wars since the second would war and that alone changes all aspects of any conflict we are involved in there. I understand Mr Hastie’s angst at the downgrading of the infantry corp, because as a proud ex infantrymen myself, it is not easy to swallow, but times change and we have to prepare for future wars, not to prepare to fight the last one again. BTW, the American Marine Corp is getting rid of its tanks and preparing to deploy long range precision missile units in the Pacific that will operate on a “shoot and scoot” scenario. The reality being that any missiles we buy/build will be long range, so hopefully that will be well back from where enemy ground forces can interfere with them.

    The single biggest priority for the Australian military should be the means to disrupt China's ability to operate its fleet near our shores. That's why missiles and submarines are taking precedence over land-based fighting capabilities (armor and infantry, etc). I think the trade-off makes sense if viewed through that lense.

    Im not a labour voter. Labour is right in Australias defence. That many tanks isnt needed. Liberals lost money on subs and didnt make a decision about appaches and lost money. Signed aukus without getting a nuclear sub contract. We need more misiles, attack helicopters, drones and light infantry vehicals. Abram tanks cost a lot and cost to run and are hard to get over to enother country. We need hypersonic missiles. With a small population we need force multipliers. We have bae systems loyal wing man for helicopters. We need upgraded tanks but im all for cutting cost on tanks when we can have a detterent from offence. Tanks are great if you have a neighbouring country and not huge land. One drone is cheaper and could destroy a tank. What ive seen in the white papers the defense procurements is way more logical under the labour party. To have a tank infantry to guard himars is silly to. Weirdly the liberals were all over the place with defense procurements. I prefer this way a lot more. Liberals did well for the royal air force, communications and radars but by the looks of what labour will have by 2025 looks good.

    Given the OH&S risks of being in the military and the fact you could get severely injured or even killed it should be shut down till the government makes it safe for anyone that wants to join. Just like any other workplace the employer needs to ensure its a zero harm workplace. If someone gets hurt does this leave the military open to law suits for failure of duty of care ?

      I do, however sincerely hope your comment is said in jest, but am all in favour of letting OH&S officials loose on any country even thinking of engaging in war, the paperwork required would offset the entire thing by decades 😂.
