Hello thai person here and I understand why you feel the title gives away too much. The thai title is "หลานม่า" which if i had to translate it as best as possible would just be "the grandmother's grandchild" which makes me wonder how the hell they made that translation
I think the title itself is a representation of what the movie was about, but not in the way you would expect. When you first read the title you would think that M is trying to make his grandma proud before she passes away, but in this case, millions represent her inheritance and the title itself means how to get grandma's inheritance before she dies. Deep.
I may have to disagree on your final point on the title. I think the title is pretending to tell you everything, but it's actually more of a misdirection. No matter what M did in his life, he would have gotten it anyway. But he chose to make grandma's life so much better, even when he knew her house was taken away.
I personally disagree with your take on the title. In Thai, it is called, “Lahn Ma” which means Grandma’s Grandchild. I think the move to give it the English title that it currently has was genius. It’s eye-catching and makes people want to look more into it. I think if there was a more subtle and lackluster name for an international audience, it wouldn’t have become the viral hit that it is. Most wouldn’t have given it a chance since it’s a Thai film. Also, the title is a red herring, written in a way where most had interpreted the word “millions” to refer to money, not the time, affection, and memories made. I think the “millions” truly referred to all that precious time, love, and connection made between them that is irreplaceable. 10/10 movie for me. I haven’t seen anything this good since Everything Everywhere All At Once
I think the English name are perfectly well thought out by whoever comes up with the name, the Thai movie name to be accurate is "Grandson, Grandma" in a Chinese-thai slang word I don't know about Western POV in the story but in Thai the english name for movie is sarcastic for the main character "m" to make people that non-Asian culture relate to it perfectly and oversee it by the story telling and image perspective tell you little by little as the movie suppose go on.
Not sure, sorry. But if I am not wrong it was initially released in some Asian countries and only after some time expanded its borders to other parts of the world. I am not really sure if it came to the US.
I haven’t seen it yet. My plan was to watch it yesterday but at the last minute I decided to watch How to make millions before grandma dies instead😅. But I will get to Inside out 2 eventually👍🏾
Making Millions didn't mean money, but it means memories they make together
