Yes, "Atlantis" came out as a single in the spring of '69, and on lp in August in the US. On a warm spring day in the spring of '71, Donovan's subterranean chant wafts from an open third story window of Rose Hall on the Edinboro State College of Pennsylvania campus... timeless... "Where I wanna be"
This song is so wonderful, thanks for this video. Donovan is so dreamy and he's a genius. I've never heard anyone sum up Atlantis so well and eloquently - plus I just enjoy his way of casting aside all the world's religions and cultures in favor of his own mythology.
I may have once thought that this was a bunch of pretension, but now, it's cool, especially the beginning monolog. Just explain the greatness of the place, then sing about your desire to be there. It works!
70 years in the great singer, songwriter Donavan sang the song Atlantis The Missing Continent today after 2010 years in the fight for the Planet Earth does not disappear as well, motivated by the actions of man himself, causing global warming and help save the little what remains of Nature and Life.
I saw him 5 years ago up in Portland OR. I was expecting him to look all old and ragid like bobby d but man he was looking sharp and sounding like he was in his 20's .You rule Donovan, Hail the Atlantis.......
ironically , this song was used in "Goodfellas" in the scene where DeNiro and Pesci stomp Frank Vincent into the floor of Liotta's seedy bar before they load him into the trunk of the car.....That's some film lmaking....only from Scorcese
@Irishpubish Maybe they were who cares? Donovan has also been practicing TM (Transcendental Meditation) for so many years that now he gets high meditating. The music sure sounds beautiful. I just love Donovan's voice and style.
Hey Jude topped the charts in September 1968, Atlantis did in July 1969 so this one came after, and yes, I agree too that this is influenced by Hey Jude, nonetheless, I believe that Donovan is a genius that shines with his own light :)
I don't see any similarities in the music, but it was Donovan that taught John and Paul guitar techniques in India that ended on the White Album as Blackbird, Julia, Mother Nature's Son and Dear Prudence. The influence was more in the other direction.
Only in yesteryear did this kind of talent exist.....2020....needs their souls to heal.....when artist wrote clever lyrics, played their own instruments, and could sing.....you felt something, that will never go away....
The Smother's Brothers Comedy concert hour. What year? Please credit. These things didn't happen in a vacuum, someones set up the opportunity. May it be so again. Not all is about getting and spending, thank you artists, support real people. Thank you for sharing this. Hail peaceful people
I rubbed shoulders with Donovan when he was coming out of a book store last year (2006), and I remember when this was live on TV. 1968 or '69, I want to guess.
Saw him in the mid-seventies in a small movie theatre in Toronto. I guess that's what it came down to. I remember he came out by himself. Isaid to myself, self, what the fuck. Where's the band? Best goddam show I saw that year!
This is a typical example of the media blowing things out of proportion - I can assure you he has been a wonderful, involved, and loving father to all his children.
Does anyone have the clip of him singing Atlantis when we was on,I believe, the Andy Williams Show. Dressed in white and several white robed children (or that is what sticks in my mind) it was absolutely beautiful and the most memorable of performances. We saw him in San Antonio in 1971-2 in what was an absolutely beautiful and awesome performance. I would love to see him again.
The continent of Atlantis was an island which lay before the great flood in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean. So great an area of land, that from her western shores those beautiful sailors journeyed to the South and the North Americas with ease, in their ships with painted sails. To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea miles.
It had been in news stories that Donovan Sr. had rejected him from the time he was first born. The mother does not need to get the permission of the father to give the child the name "Donovan"; the father doesn't hold a copyright on the name. Donovan Jr. looks very much like Donovan Sr. did in his youth.
Donovan was always kind of the court jester of every genre he adopted. Let us sing! Let us dance! All Hail Atlantis!
Wow, to think that all those kids in the audience are now in their late 60's and early 70's. Man, where has the time gone?
RavennaAl I spent 5 minutes reading and thinking about your comment, Jesus H Christ! You are damn right!
I have no words to describe what Im feeling after seen your coment
I agree, I am 77. Followed him from his beginnings. Where did the time go?
The time do not exist!
Great song ever written
Donovan is an ícone . My ídolo adolescência and teenager ❤❤❤
Thank you Sir Donovan
I always tell my friends you’re gonna like this artist, he’s alright, he’s a good fella
Hail Atlantis!
One of my favorite songs from the '60's (and I have lots). Always fascinated with Atlantis. Great song, great vid.
Moje vzpomínky na mládí.
All of Donovan’s songs speak to my heart, soul and mind. Listening to Atlantis calms me SO MUCH more than any of my many mantras!
☮️💟 + 🌊
I lucidly remember listening and attempting to play along with this with my guitar in the hot summer of 1969 in my bedroom..
I love this version when the crowd starts singing
Loved this song when I was a kid and still do
Donovan is an Icon!

I may have once thought that this was a bunch of pretension, but now, it's cool, especially the beginning monolog. Just explain the greatness of the place, then sing about your desire to be there. It works!

Damn, what kinda drugs did he take? I want some!
Actually, I love Donovan, then and now. He is just about the sweetest person ever.
He was an avid practitioner of TM.
"Donovan was and is a Magician in our Time , as a seer and Poet , .
legend song
I saw him 5 years ago up in Portland OR. I was expecting him to look all old and ragid like bobby d but man he was looking sharp and sounding like he was in his 20's .You rule Donovan, Hail the Atlantis.......
i've always liked the sound of a large number of voices singing in unisine, specially if its done right like this.
This is awesome.
ironically , this song was used in "Goodfellas" in the scene where DeNiro and Pesci stomp Frank Vincent into the floor of Liotta's seedy bar before they load him into the trunk of the car.....That's some film lmaking....only from Scorcese

@Irishpubish Maybe they were who cares? Donovan has also been practicing TM (Transcendental Meditation) for so many years that now he gets high meditating.
The music sure sounds beautiful. I just love Donovan's voice and style.

A mighty wind is truly blowing
oh my got. Peter Paul and Mary. The Smothers Brothers. Too cool man.
Take or leave it! That's the way it was and is! ∞

@@stickman1742 It reminds me more of Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.
I'd bet that the audience and background singing was choreographed by Tommy Smothers. He was really the brains behind the operation.
Is that a mellotron playing the background?
Eu adorava esta música!
this was one of the first great rock songs
Ah, one of the VERY few Hippie songs that I like.
Only in yesteryear did this kind of talent exist.....2020....needs their souls to heal.....when artist wrote clever lyrics, played their own instruments, and could sing.....you felt something, that will never go away....

Donovan From Scotland 👍
I rubbed shoulders with Donovan when he was coming out of a book store last year (2006), and I remember when this was live on TV. 1968 or '69, I want to guess.
Its all hypnotic mind control and predective programming.
the best !!!
superbe je connaissais pas Donovan; mais la chanson il me semble l'avoir déjà entendu
He's doing something different, great song
Yes, farewell tour scheduled for 2009/2010, "Ritual Groove" an album of new material due out in 2009.
Hail Atlantis....
Saw him in the mid-seventies in a small movie theatre in Toronto. I guess that's what it came down to. I remember he came out by himself. Isaid to myself, self, what the fuck. Where's the band? Best goddam show I saw that year!
homeboy knows his history!!!!!!!!
This song was in the top 10 in the world charts in 1969
i love the futurama version of this
"hail Atlanta!"
he was one of the TRUE artists of the human race, same with Bob Dylan, Johhny Cash and a bunch of other bands of the 60's
This is a typical example of the media blowing things out of proportion - I can assure you he has been a wonderful, involved, and loving father to all his children.
this guy can sing..
I love the radio version but this is pretty great too.

The girl next door!! ♥♥♥

Shame on the people who only know this song because of that movie , Donovan was a genius
i lOVE ATLANtiS it was REAL, DoNovan had the right idea!!

Ah those were the days.
Genius

HAIL ATLANTIS! I always wondered what song that was during the murder scennes on GoodfellaS" Classic song for a classic movie.
“And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind,
Let us rejoice and sing and dance and ring in the new,
Hail" Democracy...

Magic!!!!! (HU)
Thank god the magician made it on the boat!!!!!
Love to hear Mort Sahl talk about this.
Rome41jm-
Yes, he is still alive, thank God! I don't know why you would think otherwise, but it's cool, man.
Música que comove pacíficos!
Mort Sahl? One of my favorite 60's comedians, but who knew he sang? Or did he?
It was top 10
Atlantis live!
