    Italian self propelled guns are underrated. The reputations of their tanks overshadow them

    The Italian 47mm tank gun could deal with any British tank except for Mathilda. It wasn't that big of an issue because Mathilda usually broke down before reaching the battlefield.

  • @jon-paulfilkins7820
    @jon-paulfilkins7820 ปีที่แล้ว +82

    In 1940, that 47mm was pretty top tier for tank mounted guns, the problem was that they were forced to use it in 1942/43 when they were up against the next generation of allied kit. I should imagine it travelled with 2 trucks and 12 crew, 2 in the Semovente, 2 driving the ammo truck and the rest in their own truck. I'd expect that part of the complement would have been an AA machinegun.

      The Italian Army was truly and in every way the Dreamcast of WW2, modern and groundbreaking for a brief sweet moment in time; only to get body slammed by the next generation that took a single massive leap in technology.

    From profile it looks like smaller version of Soviet 203mm gun "Pion". Otherwise Germans had 150mm self propelled howitzers "Brummbar" and probably did not look for even bigger and heavier Italian weapon.

    • @mondriaa

      @@jimjones1130 the Germans didn't seem to think they were bad. They copied some (TDs) and kept the ones they captured after Italy switched sides. Early war Italian tanks were better than the British stuff in the desert. They fell behind in late 1942. For what the Italian tanks were designed for (mountains) they were very good all the way through.

    I would say yes because the suspension was obsolete by the beginning of the war so it would have been natural for a upgrade along with the gun being a modernized WW1 piece. A new design that had better protection, mobility and speed would be a great start along with a quicker firing rate.

    1 round per minute? That doesn't make for a very effective barrage.
    No protection for the gun crew because of its long range. So, it's always fired at max range? What if a target happens to be closer? What if the enemy is being a brat and doesn't follow your house rules, and decides to move a battery closer to you and shoot back?
    Trust the US Army to lose a set of tank treads. "Hey Frank, where's those several hundred pounds of tank treads that 4 of us spent an hour removing?"
    "I thought I set them over there on the desk. Did somebody move them?"

    • @majungasaurusaaaa
      @majungasaurusaaaa 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can't really fit more protection on such a vehicle. War is a numbers game. Economy above crew safety. Just because the crew would like a bit more protection doesn't mean it's wise to give them that.
