What ordeal Rob Hall went through before his death on Everest?

- Rob Hall was a New Zealand mountaineer. He was the head guide of a 1996 Mount Everest expedition during which he, Andy Harris, and two clients, Doug Hansen and Yasuko Namba died. At the time of his death, Hall had just completed his fifth ascent to the summit of Everest, more at that time than any other non-Sherpa mountaineer.
Hall’s Everest expedition proceeded without incident until the afternoon of May 10. Shortly after midnight on May 10, the expedition began the summit push from Camp IV atop the South Col. They were joined by three other parties, Scott Fischer’s Mountain Madness, as well as parties from Taiwan and India (North side).
As the climbers from three expeditions attempted to reach the summit, they quickly encountered a series of problems and delays. Upon reaching the Hillary Step, the climbers found that no fixed ropes had been placed, and they were forced to wait for an hour while the guides installed the ropes.
Things began to go seriously wrong. With a large number of climbers on the move at the same time, there were bottlenecks at the single fixed line at the Hillary Step. As crucial time spent on laying new ropes, the tight scheduling for the climb began to slip.
This is the story of the last few hours of Rob Hall before he died on Mount Everest.

Rob was brave and loyal to his family and friends. His call to Jan was heartbreaking to listen too. He was still reassuring her he was going to be ok. But they both knew that wasn't true. Died doing what he loved doing and he was determined to help someone achieve their dream causing him his life. Very sad story in mountaineering. I think the saddest one. Rest in peace Rob Hall. He will never be forgotten!
Thankyou for another concise account of another mountaineering mishap, He was too loyal. I would have made myself believe I was off descending to get more Oxygen to try and save Doug.
It is heart breaking when anyone dies alone, but Rob Hall's last phone call to his wife was exceptionally heart breaking. Thank you for the story
Rob Hall will forever be a legend in my eyes.
Yes a legend but he should have gone down. His baby never got to know him because he waited with Doug Hanson. It was a noble gesture but I think it was a mistake. He should have turned Doug around earlier, regardless of his failure to reach the summit on the previous attempt.
@Liberty Justice completely agree. They should have gone down together before the oxygen ran out and doug had a sliver of energy.

@@TashaBryanRENegade unfortunately I don't think Doug was going to make it down regardless but I still think Rob should have left and gone down himself. And they could have made an attempt the next day to get Doug. I don't think it would have been successful but I know they would have tried.
@Liberty Justice again I completely agree. Lack of oxygen, hydration, lateness of the turning around, adding human arrogance also... Rob had a chance, so did Mike Harris. Shame all around.
Thank you. Hanson and Hall are extreme cautionary tales. That Hall would misplace his loyalty which should have been placed to his wife and unborn child, to Doug Hanson - shows that guilt over taking money for guiding unfit climbers to the peak of Everest is a terrible business. I believe Hanson did not know where he was when he was descending. HACE or HAPE or simply hypothermia and hypoxia will lead to one's death. Hall should have left Doug, but Hall was probably was also suffering from hypoxia and hyperthermia on top of frostbite. So even as an expert guide and one of the strongest climbers in the world - his judgement was gone. It's all so sad that Hall's daughter never met her Dad. As usual, excellent post. You always are respectful in your work and give a complete accounting.
What you are writing is contradicting. How can Hall both be unloyal, while also having hypoxia and hyperthermia and with no judgement? If the latter part is true he can't be hold responsible for "not being loyal".
Rob knew where he was and simply couldn't manage the ropes to decend due to frostbitten hands.
Hanson achieved his lifes goal to reach the summit of Mt Everest . . . . . oh wait 😱

There should be a limit on how many climbers can be on mountain at one time!!
The problem was not the amount of people on the mountain, but a misunderstanding among the sherpas ( the two chief sherpas of Rob Hall and Scott Fischer disliked each other, but were forced by their bosses to work together the day before) who were supposed to prepare the lines on the Hillary step for a smooth ascent the next day. That was not done, so the mounteneers had to wait an hour in the death zone for the sherpas and Anatoli Boukeerv to prepare the trail. Three smart mounteneers Of Rob Hall's team actually abortet the ascent. I have great respect for these guys.
Doug Hansen was the problem. Plus...Rob Hall should not have encouraged him to come back for a second try. It's so sad that Rob left a pregnant wife at home.
Actually Doug Hansen turned back several times earlier in the day only to be encouraged by Hall to continue.
@@Bez00there's really no proof of that just Krakeur saying he saw Doug get out of line, rob speak to him, and Doug get back in line.
Nobody knows what was said between them and frankly Krakeur doesn't have the least biased account of what happened that day (and went down way ahead of most the group before the trouble started).
His account was overly critical of many members of the party including Anatoly who saved 4 people single handedly that day so while riveting I've always taken it with a grain of salt.
@@dararupert7199 Then by that reasoning there is no proof that Doug Hansen was the 'problem', either, which was essentially the basis of the content I replied to. Hansen also had kids and a family back home. It's basically just slandering a man who, unfortunately, also passed away during the incident.
The Sandy lady was a problem too.
1 guy reaching the summit results in the death of at least 3 people. Sounds like lunacy to me.

I think the altitude affected Rob Hall's decision making skills. Friend or not, there was just no reason to stay and die next to Doug Hansen. Yasuko Namba was just naive as many Japanese are.

I'm happy when they die doing what they love. These folks go to risk their life and possibly die. For these people it's a accomplishment to live or die on the mountain. They think a long life is a wasted life.
You honestly think Rob Hall dying instead of being there for the birth of his daughter is a wonderful thing?
@Tommykey07 His choice. His family took second place to his hobby. Having a daughter exempts him from the Darwin Awards.
