@@superultrathanksmom3845 future tech doesnt need to be new tech. Its all about application. The tech for a moon base has existed for a decade. The idea of building one in 10 years is still futuristic.
I love the sound of a vintage synth being played very sweetly and mellow. I don’t hear that very often. The last bit of this with those jazzy chord progressions was just sublime.
You are right in saying that the composing is quite simple. Choosing not to use MIDI, the problem we had to face is that not all of the players are "virtuoso"s. We could only reharse 5 times before the performance, and never with the full line up. So we decided on a set of simple rules which could drive the composition in an interesting way albeit being simple to play and coordinate. Looking forward for more amazing symphonic complex masterworks in the future though ;D
Kindly consider making actual ‘string’ sections of the entire string choir. The programming is thus: It’s always a single sawtooth wave, single oscillator, through a FIXED filter bank (EQ) which replicates the body resonance of each instrument. The specific settings for violin, viola, cello & contrabass are all available online. Ask me if you have trouble. In general, these sounds are heavily highpassed, with very uneven resonance. Totally unlike a VCF with Key Follow. Put 10 instruments playing 1st violin. 10 playing 2nd violin. 10 cello. 8 contrabass. Pan according to orchestra seating. Each instrument has a unique pan location. All of this combined thru a convolution reverb running a good hall IR.
There are some marvellous classic synths featured in this - I used to have an MS10, a JEN SX1000, and a TR606. Beautiful electronic instruments - owners do not let them go, or you will miss them so much in the future!
At last! A different approach to synth music: instead of using a sequencer to endlessly cycle away while parameters are noodled someone has removed virtually all of the automatic processes & concentrated on THINKING about what happens rather than let repetition rule the roost. Bravo! Synth musicians take note! Tangerine Dream were very good at doing what they did but that approach has been VASTLY over done. This approach is far more thoughtful & successful.
+Logic / Reason / Evidence if you believe that it doesn't take a lot of thought and planning to pull off a modular synth performance then your words betray your handle.
+Logic / Reason / Evidence i kind of agree with you and its good to see but i cant really hear anything new in this either - tomita vangelis jean michel jarre philip glass penquin cafe orchestra etc all trod this semi classical synth route years ago but only using sequecers to enhance not dominate the compisitions.popular electronic dance music tends to over use one patch arpeggiator n sequencer riffs so we have become numb to that sound, there isnt even a song mode on most new hardware sequencers these days so what does that tell you about the modern approach to a song/instrumental structure.
no matter how good the rest of the analog synth symphony plays, its all about getting the house plant player to hold the groove down. way undervalued instrument.
Impossibly gorgeous composition, as well as a minor miracle in getting all these vintage analog synthesizers that close in tune! Not an easy challenge to be sure... :O BRAVO!!! :)
Thanks! As there are countless examples of synthesizers used in a one-man setup (e.g. Jarre, etc.), we were interested in exploring the sound of less exact, human interactions. We had to face several limitations regarding reharsals, etc, so we were forced to keep things simple. But I agree that it would be interesting to include more keyboard-less instruments, we did experiment a bit in the beginning when all the players are turning the FM modulation to zero.
God I love the synthesizer list! TWO MC-202s! What an odd choice! Jen SX-1000 as well! LOVE that you included the JX-3P on here as well! OMG I'm about to burst at the seams!
Very, very nice! This is just amazing! I sometimes imagined a synth orchestra and i've finally found it. More of this please! Btw: Your username has to be the best in youtube history :)
That was actually the original idea, to also diffuse sound with individual speakers for each player. Unfortunately we had to refrain from that due to organizational reasons.
This is a good piece of music but there is the "symphonic" part missing, it would be nice if some of the synths-players would play string parts and try to sound a bit like classical music.
There is just one thing that bugs me: Do you need all these people to make this sound? Most of them are doing very little. Back in the days you had one man controlling about 4 to 5 synths at once and with 4 of them and a couple of sequencers you had something similar if not better.
My own electronic classical music (see my videos) has a 'symphonic' feel but can be played solo and is classically notated. Influences of Stravinsky in my track 'Lausanne' but think it still is original. Would be interested in any feedback as has not been performed yet. The synth has still not properly been used as a solo classical performance instrument.
wow! really big respect! what was the synth line up? and what made that rhodes type of sound? a juno 60? really good stuff! Is there anywhere i can download this in good quality?
1:42 - 6:06 Is just awesome. The first easy part reminds me of Tangerine Dreams theme from the OST Deadly Care, and the parts from 3:15 has some similar sequencing as from the livealbum Poland by the same band. Got to love this stuff : )) It's strange to think that Tangerine Dream did almost the same thing with only 3 members 30 years ago !! Just check out th-cam.com/video/1mNratrACks/w-d-xo.html from 1:15 and th-cam.com/video/qsApXLYXdb4/w-d-xo.html the whole album...
So this is a manifestation of how people in the 1970s imagined a futuristic orchestra of the 21st century. Sci-fi prediction that actually happened.
Except it's all vintage gear from those days, not really futuristic...

I always thought it was weird how orchestras never adopted having at least one big analog synth in there too.
I love the sound of a vintage synth being played very sweetly and mellow. I don’t hear that very often. The last bit of this with those jazzy chord progressions was just sublime.
I bet it was fun keeping them all in tune!
Indeed :)

Fantastic!!!!!
20 or so synth nerds in one room!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing.
This is fantastic! This should be in Spotify. Imagine recording this in a studio... simply amazing.

What a great video.. I would have put my trumpet down in high school to join a synth band in a heart beat..
thats a fckng good idea

I like the guy playing the house plant.

Phasepalm!

I really like this band, this piece is absoutely wonderful, i hope to see them in france one day !
I bet this sounded tremendous live.
I'm going to turn the air conditioner on and everyone is going to go out of tune.
Best comment by far as so true!!
We have finally gathered the full personnel and instrument list, I added it to the description.
This is how it should be, electronic music without playback. This is what you call Live Music!
you are watching playback *facepalm*
he means they're not relying on sequencers, get off your high horse

Man i have no regrets after getting my korg monologue.

no words to describe such piece of art.
I can’t find this on streaming platforms! This is a gem!
Literally nothing can surpass the Mono/Poly as my favorite of the analog giants.
They had a Serge, an EMS synthi, and a Juno on the same stage! God, I wish I were a part of that group.
Very, very nice! This is just amazing! I sometimes imagined a synth orchestra and i've finally found it. More of this please!

I think, it would be interesting if keyboardists would bring their own speakers and use them instead processing everything through mixer.
That was actually the original idea, to also diffuse sound with individual speakers for each player. Unfortunately we had to refrain from that due to organizational reasons.
Absolutely Amazing!! One of the best things I've seen!
beautiful minimalism! wish there were more performances available.
needs a theremin soloist too
Nah, a Theremin would be so 1960s :)
Un-freakin-believable! Congrats!!
this is great, never seen anything performed like this before.
Good job & good feeling because it's not easy...
Beautiful and inspiring!
stunningly beautiful.
Wow very nice played!
A great idea to share.
Beautifully done!
Beautiful!! I strive to make music like this
I think it looks easier as it is. Great performance
Beautiful! Great idea!
Awesome! This is just fantastic!
I love how they included a TB-303 and TR-606. 🤓
Daaamnn, what it wouldhave done an audio interface with loopback feature in this amazing mesmerizing orchestra
This is fascinating.
SWEDEN!!!! I love you guys!! :D
Amazing! Wish I was there =)
What's the synth with the wooden end cheek that the guy on the right is playing. Sounds bloody marvellous!
That's Kristofer Ulfves playing a Moog Prodigy and a TR-606. Full equipment and personnel list is in the video description!
Total synth porn..Absolutely love this, now i'm off for pt 2.! Thankyou so much for sharing
ha ha haaa!!!!! only you Mik!! this is incredibly awesome tho! great job!
This gives me a lot of hope for the immediate future. The trick now is to encourage it to be duplicated here in the United States.
This is great !
Love this so much! Are UASSO still performing?!!
Awesome!
Cool idea. Keep it up! :)
Very very nice, I love KORG.
awesooome this is soooo awesome
ultimate part
Yes!
Actual fricken Wow!
totally awesome

Wonderful.
Personally, I think It's awesome!!
I like it, particularly 3-6 mins. Is someone at the back playing a potted shrub towards the end?
Sooo great!..
Cool! Where is the Theremin?
1:02 Dafuq is this shit?!!!
1:42 Holy crap, that's actually pretty epic!
Yep...the Juno-60 does the "rhodes".
Dette var kjempe bra!!!=)

@cheamverdi Can you give an example of a YT-video which you consider to be good synth composition?
I love Sinth musical

would be interesting to hear this live, with one very accurate 20-40khz mono speaker for each instrument....
I'm wondering if there are any all-synthesizer orchestras here in the U.S.?
Wonderful... where can I buy your works?
wow! really big respect! what was the synth line up? and what made that rhodes type of sound? a juno 60?
really good stuff! Is there anywhere i can download this in good quality?
schöner warmer sound
2:04-3;08 is so wonderful.
critics be damned
cool!
❤❤❤❤❤
lol hard to go anywhere these days without getting noticed:)
genius
That was bloody awesome, man. Do more stuff like this! :D
Do you plan touring at all? I don't see a schedule on your myspace?
Wow.. did you record the performance? I really want that
This is still so beautiful, but why stop what seems to be a perfect intro (1:40) to something really exciting and epic that suddenly stops at 6:02?
No Moog Taurus??
cool..
this is how aliens communicate eachself, love this
no Oberheim? next
wow
Seriously, one good violinist would put all of them to shame.
cool, I imagine some 80s scifi movie by listening to this
row 2 second from left what is the synth ?
This isn't symphonic, this is synthphonic
Let see
Do you have sheet music for this?
Are these two videos the only thing available anywhere from the Upsala Analogue Synth Orchestra??
Makes me tgink of Gershon kingslys TNE MOOG QUARTET
