I enjoyed the story of the stove. I feel that way when I am canning, and I feel like I am connecting with my Grandmother she canned back in the day. Does your Cierra can, if not she should learn how, very beneficial to your way of life. I also make jewelry and love to cook to connect with my mother in mind too. I learned how to make soap, body butter, salves, and candles too. All good skills to know saves money too plus it could be an income stream too.

The wood of your cabin will age with time. It would be cool to seal it and then over time you can see what patina the wood gets naturally. If you do stain it I would go with like a medium oak stain.
I can’t believe how big Skeeter is! He’s grown so much!
I’m sure your Grandpa would be really happy that you are using the stove he designed and used for so many years. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Nice little cabin Bud...really enjoyed watching you smash the front gable and wall out before the snow came...crushed it. Sherwin Wms semi transparent SW3567 or some cut down version of it...has a little green in it which might tone out and blend the older and newer logs without setting the darker logs off any more than they are.
What ever you will be fine it will always need to be done again.
    Cheers,
    Bill

You & Skeeter are back!!! Love seeing him playing while you're working. LOL What a life! The stove modification was cool. Think its awesome that your grandfather made it & it was in his cabin.
I prefer very light/natural stains. For the tin/roof color, we have red on a shed. Some have mentioned red fades to orange/pink, but we haven't had a problem. Heard blue is a good option as it blends into the surroundings & no biggie if it fades.
Can't wait to see your up coming projects!

Greeting from Hamburg in Germany where the Hamburges came from (second biggest city in Germany) The "foam.thing" I am a facility manager and building expert. Every foam- building foam, sound isolation foam or special foam must be protected from heat sun and water. Many dont know that fact and they wonder when the foam gets brown and then after some weeks porous- when it gets that point it start to dissolve. And then it has no more isolationspower and later its gone. What to do to protect it: Normely you spray first water on the wood and then in the process of foaming water on the foam and it soaks the water in and becomes much more harder and closer in itself.-Brings a better isolation. Then you cut away all the rest of the foam and then you cover it with a professionel brown (fits to the wood colour) super heat proove and flexibel silicon. It must be fit for inside and outside. But bevor making a line a cover between the 2 wood peaces- make it dust free! To work with silicon needs some help. There are YT teacher for working with silicon. The silicon protects the foam from heat water and it keeps the log cabin close because after the time the wood shrinkes. Thats way the silicon is perfect it is flexibel! The foam is not flexibel. If the wood shrinks because it becomes dry the foam rips and then the air can go through it or the heat can go out or the water can come in. I would like to see you making a better protection shild for the foam. It cost you my be 2 days for the inside and 2 for the outside. But outside not in cold temps- read the sub on the foam bottle. It needs some plus temps to work perfect. Traditionell log homes or cabs have forest moses between the logs. But foam is good if it is well build and protected. This silicon glue for industry is 4 season. Like Sikaflex. I love that stuff! Other love yachting silicon! And if you would like to get a clean full metal oven with stones inside then take a look at the "Buderus Gussofen Logastyle 31" in longtherm it is good NOT to have to much dust in the lunges and get a oven that takes fresh air from the outside and not the inside. This comp Buderus is also in the US and gives support for influencer. Also the comp Pedromax (more then 100 years old and also in the US CA) with the strongest oillamps (400 watt) they love influencer as well and they have traditionell cooking stuff and outdoore stuff. Kyle, Have you considered putting a flat ceiling over your room, maybe around 7' high or so? It would not only help tremendously with heat retention but also offer you a bit of overhead storage for your off season clothing etc. I totally understand the ambiance a cathedral ceiling adds to the cabin as I had one in my first cabin as well. After living there for a few years, I put a ceiling overhead and once I had the benefits that it offered me, I wished I had done it sooner. Keep on keepin on buddy, I enjoyed your video. Cheers :-))

    • @KYLESCABIN
      @KYLESCABIN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Hey Boss thanks for stopping by. I actually havent thought of that but I love the idea. More heat retention and storage would be very beneficial. It's a 12×16 cabin so storage is a bit of an issue. I'm strongly considering that idea, thanks for the suggestion! Speaking of storage your truck tool box for food storage is genius. You have the best cabin living channel out there in my opinion. Tons of information and entertaining videos. I have learned a lot from you!

There is a burning process that looks awsome and also ends up making your cabin more burn resistant and keeps bugs away from eating it and stops wood rot and water repels off of it. I don't know what it is called but it is a skill that involves a large torch tool and I don't know but you may have to get a professional to do it but the outcome is stunning.

I love the story of your wood stove. I think you should do the galvanized roof and a medium brown for the cabin. It is so beautiful out there! TFS

We replaced some of our metal roof on the shed, the new stuff is incredible! The side with the old roofing will have a foot of snow on it, while the new stuff is clear! Very impressive. I can look up what exactly was the roofing we bought. 👍😉💖

I think you should just seal the outside of the cabin and not stain it darker. A Blue roof would be cool!

If u want to extend ur porch/deck, u could make two posts and then make a four ft extension on ur roof joists. Just a thought.

I used tin from a pool on my cabin. I get that its alot smaller but just a pool-sized roll that I used probably weighed a few hundred pounds... It so heavy but it gave a decent result.
I went for 3 days and came back yesterday. Il try to post a short video. Its always nice to spend some time in the woods!

I drank lots of Miller when I was your age. Its good beer. A tin roof is a smart idea. Just get what is the best you can afford and dont worry about the color..

Hey Kyle, I would comment more but I'm usually watching onna TV. As far as staining the cabin, let the grain tell you what to do. Whatever you do don't paint!

Hey Kyle, good to see you back. First: Galvanized roof is a good choice because, later on down the line you can paint it any color you choose to. Second: The cabin looks good the way it is but, you might want something that is more cheerful. If that cabin was mine, Where the dark part starts from the middle of the window up, I would paint it a medium brown. Walmart sells a color called Fresh Pumpernickel, really nice brown and the bottom part just a sealer. Do the brown front and back the same. Sides, the sealer. Then, in the front at the top, design a nice logo to show the cabin is yours and Sierra. Just a thought. Skeeter: is a good dog, I watch him and he is not afraid of power tools, he didn't even flinch when you used the circular saw. I love that stove. When you put the slider on, make sure you do it in a way you can adjust it. I have found in my 72 years, sliders tend to wear down whatever is holding it on and it becomes loose making your wood burn fast. I've talked to much. Take care

I love the ideas! Skeeter is a great dog. He does really good with gun shots too. I cant wait to get him out grouse hunting this fall. Hes going to do great. Hes got a really good nose on him too. He gets a little far ahead of me sometimes because he gets excited but he stops and waits for me as soon as I yell his name. I got lucky, he is a natural. I love seeing your comments. It's great to hear from someone that has the experience!

Pense em aumentar seu telhado nas laterias em 50 cm ou 01 metro, assim ganha em espaço para andar nas laterais e melhora bastante a friagem que entra via neve. Piso de madeira acima do nível do chão é sempre mais quente que concreto.
