    Just bought the exact same car. Never owned a Hyundai before and I'm absolutely blown away. Was trying to decide between the Camry and the Accord hybrid and test drove this car as an afterthought. So glad I did. So comfortable, quiet, great sound system, all the tech, incredible mpg (got 610 miles on my first tank), 3 years free regular maintenance, 3 years of their OnStar equivalent, and 5 year 60k bumper to bumper. I paid $32.5k through Truecar here in Nevada. About 37k out the door. Make sure you test drive this car if you're looking for a mid-size hybrid sedan. Absolutely the best value in the segment.

    If anyone is curious about this car I bought one and absolutely love it. I had a 2019 rx450 and this car blows it out of the water..
    Key features.
    Solar panels
    With going under 75 on highway and sunny week getting about 50 mpg per gallon
    About 550 miles per tank
    Ambient lights in the car
    One of the best picture quality cameras in a car better than lexus. Audi and some other luxury brands.
    To full up tank with gas being 3.30 a gallon it's about 37 dollars to fill up from almost empty
    Pretty nice ride
    Really good seat warmer and steering wheel warmer
    Cons
    Very noisy interior especially on the highway
    Mpg could change drastically with putting cheap gas or not a lot of sunlight
    When accelerating can be a little sluggish and have a delay if your trying to take off from 0 mph
    Besides that amazing car highly recommended and music system is pretty good as well

    Hey Nile great review! I wish you would have talked about driving impressions a little longer. How was the 6-speed transmission? Acceleration? Handling? I know it’s a hybrid so MPGs are at the top of that list but would be nice to still touch on the other aspects:)

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have no idea how acceleration was 😂 I kid, overall this was pretty much average across the board in terms of road feel, performance, and handling which is why I didn't mention much on it. Usually if I notice something is either really good or really bad I bring it up. As for the transmission, their Active Shift Control tech they've implemented on this was very good, basically couldn't feel the transmission shifting it was so smooth. I should have touched on that in the video, you're right!

    • @bigfoot060775
      @bigfoot060775 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My Sonata Hybrid accelerates great, and passing on two lane roads, (the one and only time when it is LEGAL to exceed the posted speed limit in the state of Washington) it does impeccably! Other than an occasional tiny bit of jerkiness when starting from a standstill, the shifting is seamless and smooth as a baby’s bottom! With the electric motor also under the hood, there’s not enough room for an 8 speed tranny, but with the help and constant torque of the electric motor, you really don’t need the extra speeds.

  • @MrJamespeyton
    @MrJamespeyton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You didn’t mention that the brakes on a hybrid last much longer because they transfer the braking energy into recharging the battery instead of brake wear. Also, if you live in a northern climate you will notice that the mpg is slightly less because the engine must run more to maintain cabin temperature and the winter gasoline blend is also less efficient which also affects mpg. My 2015 Sonota hybrid gets about 43mpg in summer and about 36 mpg in the winter months.

    Great review and very informative ! I heard a rumor about the Sonata might be discontinued in the next model cycle and how does this car compare to the Camry and Accord, I am in the market for a mid-sized sedan either a Hybrid or regular gas engine ?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's certainly possible, buying trends are continuing towards SUVs and crossovers making sedans less profitable for automakers. The Sonata gets a lot of things right, and the hybrid helps too. The newest Accord is a decent car but the infotainment isn't great. Toyota also has a bad infotainment system but excellent overall reliability, especially with the hybrids they make. Personally I'd go with something like the Honda Clarity and get the most benefit from that PHEV system.

    Awesome video. I have some questions - what is the capacity of the high-voltage battery, and what kind of things around the car does it power? Also, can the car use the high-voltage battery to provide heat during the winter or it uses standard engine heat as a source?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forget how large the battery itself actually is, or if Hyundai even publishes the info on it, but it's around 1-2 kWh I believe, very small. It should be able to heat the car during the winter, although you'll run through the battery pretty quickly since it's designed to offset the overall gas engine. The battery itself won't always be fully charged, even if left in the sun for the solar panels to work.

    Great Video! Thank you!
    Questions regarding the Hybrid: (1) Does the solar panel only charge when the car is running OR does it charge when off also? (2) with regard to energy... Does the car use up to a certain form of energy first prior to consumption of gas?... Which form of energy (gas/electric) is used first?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, the solar panel will charge whether the engine is running or it's off, as long as there's sun hitting it and the panel itself isn't too hot you'll be charging from the roof. The on-board electronics determine whether or not the electric drive is working or it's in gas mode. Since the battery is small you'll rarely be in full electric mode, but the electric system work will to offset your overall fuel consumption. Hope that helps!

    • @PRNTestDrive

      It might not be as efficient! I thought about doing a separate video on the roof on this, as the panels themselves end up getting hot and stop charging after a couple hours even in our lighter sun during the week I filmed this. Hyundai says in their owners manual that the roof charges more efficiently while the vehicle is driving since the air flowing across the panels help to cool it off.

    I actually like the exterior, and interior is fine too. My problem is I don’t trust Hyundai engine and transmissions. Add to that a new hybrid and I shy away. I take a Toyota hybrid over anything else. They last and are proven. Hyundai and Kia seem to be all into design. But there are many recalls and engine fires. And no I don’t want to deal with dealer service department to have it fixed.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's certainly one aspect that will need more time to rectify, I know there's been some serious problems with their engines over the years and this one is a bit complicated with the hybrid. Time will definitely tell, but I know what you mean about having to get it fixed even if it's under warranty, the hassle going in isn't great.

      The 2.4GDI made in Alabama has been a huge embarrassment for Hyundai. Just when Hyundai was making serious inroads into Toyota/Honda reliability competition.
      The new Sonata uses an all new base engine 2.5 naturally aspired and the 1.6T never really had failure issues.
      The 2.0 used in the hybrid... I'm not sure about. My guess is they are Korean assembled and are reliable. The overall hybrid system in the new Sonata? Time will tell. The warranty is very good though.

    I have a 2020 Sonata Hybrid in the blue trim, and I absolutely love it! I get about 53-56 MPG. I really love this generation of Sonatas, and when Biden and the Democrats start jacking up the gas prices here in the US, I’ll probably be doubly thanking myself for springing for the hybrid!!!

    A solar roof is gimmicky. Imagine cost to repair, accident, dents, hail Yada yada

      That's a valid point, the repair cost. We haven't seen that comment so far but definitely something to consider if it gets damaged.

    Solar panel, sucks....Only getting 2 miles per month, waste of solar panel.

      It’s two miles you didn’t have before. It’s not meant to solve your gas consumption, but with thousands of these on the road they add up to a cleaner planet.

      @@PRNTestDrive I sit down and analyze my statement afterwards. I guess in a few years, they might be able increase to fully use the solar panel without having to plug the car to be charged. Have to look at the solar panel as a way for future growth.

    Feels that title is misleading.

      How so? I clearly explain why you wouldn’t want to park this in your garage. Does it say ‘never’ park it? Does it say ‘your garage will explode’? No.

      @@PRNTestDrive on title you say don't park this in your garage while on the video you praise the car. Sounds like misleading title to me. Don't get me wrong as I love the Sonata, almost got one but thought you were going to slash the car in the video. That's all.

      No....... it’s because it has a solar roof.

      He means the solar panel won't charge if it's in the garage.

    Sonata is great until you have an issue then the excuses come out. And with bumper to bumper warranty they still say there be a charge to check it out. At least Ray Skillman in Indy. Plus your urgently will be put on the back burner cause they don't have anyone to handle your situation. Do yourself a favor and don't buy from Ray Skillman hyundai in Indiana.
