CSX's Pittsburgh Sub

  • CSX's former Pittsburgh and Lake Erie main line runs roughly fifty miles from McKeesport to New Castle, PA along the western boarder of Pennsylvania, skirting the banks of the Ohio River, as well as crossing some rather unique bridges. I paid a visit to this line for the first time since 2006 during a weekend trip to the Pittsburgh area in mid-May, 2013. Traffic was not as affluent as the nearby NS Ft. Wayne Line, but it still broke up the monotony of seeing NS units. The morning usually sees quite a few eastbounds, with a westbound or two thrown in. The afternoon can be pretty hit-or-miss. The locations are not very photogenic, with the exception of Monaca, the opening scenes. This line predominately runs through the woods right along side the river, with no road access until you enter a town, but regardless, I've done the best I could with what there was. So sit back and enjoy CSX trains along the Pittsburgh Sub.
Enjoy, subscribe and thanks for watching!!

I grew up in Coraopolis and remember it having a 4 track main . you only saw Pittsburgh & Lake Erie trains with an occasional Delaware and Hudson coal train with helpers in the middle . as for the scene @ 16:55 from Neville Island there used to be an Interlocking tower there against the hill side . sure are a lot of memories in this video . Thank You for posting . Ray in Pa.

Hi Ray. Took me long enough to respond to you!! Thanks for sharing this memory. Some of these videos are now doing the same for me as so much has changed in such a short time. Be well!

One of those interlocking towers still stands up the line under the Coraopolis Neville island bridge

I haven't been back to this area in several years, and with the way that CSX has restructured itself, I think there may be slightly fewer trains now. Here's a link to a list of CSX train symbols. It's updated pretty regularly so I'd recommend checking it out. railroadfan.com/wiki/index.php/CSX_Train_Symbols

Cool video. Kinda has that Pentrex feel to it. Don't know if that's what you were going for but, it's a real nice job.
