If they haven't put enough effort into high school to even be able to read, why would you worry they can't get into college? They've clearly decided education is not for them. They're owed opportunity and nothing else.
Worry not, DEI would open the doors for them at the top campuses of UC system. And once they got in, UC will be obliged to get them graduated, so they can get jobs at the DEI offices.
*cut the racial crap... some people want it, some people don't... it's human history... you can't save everyone... classism is real.... there's never been a society without peasants and criminals... no matter the continent... focus on the good, not the bad*
This is a fact although it’s not a reality. I learned from a cardboard Hooked On Phonics Box. We are beyond those days as we’re speaking of ELA data for students not just in TK or Kinder. ELA is not only descriptive of reading. It’s comprehension, critical analysis and many other things.
I worked as an aide, often in reading labs with kids who were behind in reading. We had a lot of kinders every year that started school with a blank slate. No letters, sounds, numbers, sometimes couldn’t hold a pencil. I always wondered … what have you been doing for 5 years.
In Europe kids are tracked by their talents. About 20% go to college, but “we” insist everyone is going to college. That’s statistically ridiculous. Trade and other programs need to be greatly expanded in high schools, to prepare kids with something for a job right out of high school.
You can lead a horse to water , but you can’t make the horse drink. If the students are not motivated to learn and apply themselves, then whose fault is it? The students who are not thriving academically should be offered vocational trainings to equip them to make a productive living with other types of skills.
Great presentation. Unfortunately, I felt like there was too much of an emphasis on college and basic life skills and vocational trades are ignored. We have enough with PolySci BA's and not enough plumbers and mechanics.
I agree we need to have an emphasis on the trades which have been absent a long time. That doesn’t dismiss however the fact that we don’t have a system of governance for the academic requirements that have been put. If our unions take a student centered approach and we can have productive conversations, we can build pathways of learning that usher students into the trades with ease. I’m in total support of this as an alternative path.
Schools, especially public schools, shouldn't take stands or make statements about anything, anything other than teaching reading, writing, science, math - anything (everything) else is just time & energy & money wasted, education-wise. Just teach the skills & subjects; doing less than that (doing other than that, doing "extra") is just getting in the way of teaching, is just getting in the way of students learning. Less ideology, more reading; less ideology, more writing; less ideology, more science; less ideology, more math. A lot more math. Stop confusing meaning well for doing good, please.
Failure of the teachers to teach leads to the DEI system, to show equity of outcomes instead of equity of opportunities. It is great to teach students how to march for ceasefire, it is much harder to teach them how to read.
i used to follow the blog of a woman with a masters in education from Harvard, She taught for about two years in Oakland public schools and then she bailed out and went to NYC.

School choice is only realistic solution where improvement in student (and teacher) performance will occur and be rewarded. This would involve devolving power (funding) from the teacher's union controlled school boards thus will be a heavy lift. So try a small experimental program, the board may go along with that. In NOLA it took Katrina to do this.
I noticed a few years ago Greatschools, which has tons of info on schools in the US, had lower scores for some schools I was familiar with. Upon digging I noticed they added an equity score to all their scoring, which is basically if minorities in the school are not successful they ding you. They don’t give you extra points for Asians though 😂
when i was in school we learned to read in first grade. we learned in second grade to read and every year we learned. if a child didn't learn then they could not advance to the next grade. if a student couldn't learn with summer school and as a last resort holding them back a grade. then they would be pulled from the normal order by placing them in a class for slow kids.
They don’t deserve anything. You have to put the time to study and say no to hanging out with the homies.
Democrat agenda is working.

School boards should have NO views on Gaza.
Oakland is out of control and has been for many years , politics has taken it's toll !

Parents should be teaching kids to read before kindergarten.

Slightly difficult when the parents themselves can't read.

merit matters....excellence requires effort and discipline
Didn't hear anything about accountability and consequences. Without this, don't expect much improvement.
I am very impressed with her!
Thank you.
Don't worry I'm sure California will drop all requirements For entry into college for black students
Then how do you figure? They're so good at weighing out bags of drugs in grams and then convert it to ounces that takes some good mathing.
I was thinking about how they could break into cars at the In N Out burger in less than 30 seconds and not leave any hand prints :)

I believe you have the procedure reversed.
@@HazeOfWhearyWater You got me on that

@@sycoywalton Unions taking a student approach. What does that look like?

1:23- "Our students deserve the opportunity to go on to the next level". It doesn't appear that they do, ma'am.
They don't deserve anything if they don't use the plenty opportunities they already have.
Parents, or lack of.

Enforce the laws, remove the politics and allow the teachers to do their job.

Preach.
It is a culture thing. Some cultures prioritize learning, some don't.
This is the reason for high crime - too busy figuring out pronouns
Students don't deserve anything. They need to study, our teachers are not reliable.
You can lead a thug to knowledge but you can't make 'em think.
Blah blah blah…not one suggestion given on HOW to make a student a reader.

That's running at about -80%,
Ain't it?

You're missing the big picture here. Are they aware of their trans labels?
