    Those passenger cars are Kawasaki MU units, destined for the New Haven Line of the Metro-North Commuter Railroad. Formerly used only between New Haven and Grand Central, with branch service to New Canaan, but recently they've begun providing service to New London as well. They have capability to use the overhead catenary of the former NHRR in CT to Woodlawn Junction, where they switch over to third rail power in the former NYC territory.

      I've heard that the State of CT bought new Kawasaki's for the Shoreline East between New Haven and New London. The cars in this video are marked for Metro North which is everything west of New Haven. I also heard that Metro North was acquiring some new stock for the Waterbury and Danbury lines. I doubt that cars east of New Haven would be marked as Metro North where there are two totally different union groups involved; everything north and east of New Haven is part of the Amtrak unions and they also own the rails. This has been a contention for years where the Metro North unions are paid more. There are some cross union agreements where Amtrak Northeast Corridor service runs on the Metro North rails from New York to New Haven. There is some direct service from New London to Stamford on Shoreline East but it is pretty minimal.

      Those are Kawasaki M-8s. They replace the [venerable] M-2s, as well as the -4s and -6s. Some sets (or cars) are owned by the MTA, but some are actually owned by ConnDOT. I've heard the Shoreline East sets had their third rail shoes removed. The changeover to catenary is now at [just short of] Pelham. The reason being, they had problems with the changeover and the Woodlawn interlocking; where trains were getting gapped. As such, the catenary grantries are still extant. I'm from NYC.

    Metro North Railroad. They operate on the former New Haven RR from New Haven, Connecticut to Grand Central Terminal, New York City, NY. They have what I think they call pin and cup couplers, so there was some sort of adapter and installed train air hose. These cars normally have train air thru the couplers. They run on dual electrical modes. Over head wire at 11,000 +/- volts ac and 750 +/- volts DC third rail.

    Really neat that you caught the Metro-North Kawasaki power cars being hauled by CSX. I've noticed before that while light rail cars (trams) are usually hauled by truck, heavy-rail cars (like the Metro in Washington D.C., Metro-North around NYC, and pretty much any diesel-driven commuter train) are usually hauled by freight carriers, then the commuter railroad's own switchers complete the journey. IIRC these powered cars have to have their brake systems disengaged to be hauled like this, so they go to the end of the train.
    Great catch there!

    When a train is left with a foreign railroad locomotive, it's called "run through power." If a train consists of all cargo from one shipper to one customer, it's cheaper and faster to leave the locomotives on the railroad serving the shipper than to disconnect them, connect the next railroad's motive power, send the engines back empty, then send an engine to pick up the returned cars to reverse the process, especially if the customer will be sending cars right back to that shipper. The sending railroad either pays for use of the other railroad's track, or lets that railroad use their track for the same number of miles, free.

    I assume the M8s will be used for Shore Line East based on the third rail shoes being removed from the wheel sets. So far all of Shore Line Easts M8s have had their 3rd rail shoes removed while Metro-North Railroads have kept them so they can operate to Grand Central Terminal which uses 3rd rail for power.

    • @mambomta
      @mambomta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3rd rail shoes are installed after they are delivered as the shoes are not needed until after delivery, there is no need to have them already installed and get possibly damaged during transport. SLE & Metro North share the equipment. The cars being delivered have both Metro North & ConnDOT stickers applied

    • @banksrail
      @banksrail ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mambomta SLE operates with no third rail shoes and don’t install them because of clearance issues. Metro North sets can run the entire SLE but SLE sets can’t do vice versa. Don’t the original comment may very well be correct.

    • @mambomta
      @mambomta ปีที่แล้ว

      @@banksrail I am aware that SLE M8 sets do not have their 3rd rail shoes installedm
      However, as I said, the 3rd rail shoes are not installed until after delivery for the reasons I stated. There are no actual separate SLE cars. They just remove the shoes on the cars dedicated for SLE after testing. If the cars being delivered were SLE only equipment, they wouldn't have Metro North decals.
      All M8 sets can run on both railroads, but the 3rd rail shoes have to be either removed or installed depending on which railroad the equipment is on. Due to the work involved, and the amount of equipment SLE needs, they just keep a small number of sets dedicated without shoes. If the clearance issue is ever fixed, the entire fleet will have 3rd rail shoes. Depending on the cost, it may be a good idea to have new cars designed with retractable shoes in the future.

    • @banksrail
      @banksrail ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mambomta Incorrect. All SLE M8’s do have Metro North decals on them along with the ConnDOT seal.

    • @mambomta
      @mambomta ปีที่แล้ว

      @@banksrail Reread my response to you. I've already addressed this. There is nothing incorrect about my statement. The reason that the sets dedicated to SLE have both Metro North and SLE logos is because they are the same equipment. All sets are delivered without their shoes installed. The shoes are installed for testing on Metro North. They are then removed only for the sets running on SLE due to the clearance issue on SLE. If there wasn't a clearance issue, the shoes would still be on the cars. M8 cars cannot run on SLE with the 3rd rail shoes installed.
      According to a post on r/NYC rail, the sets for SLE service are randomly rotated in and out by removing or adding the shoes back. So the only incorrect part of my comment is they had dedicated sets assigned.
      Search "M8 cars loaned to Shoreline have had their 3rd rail pickup shoes removed"
      There is even a post there that explains why the 3rd rail shoes are removed for SLE service.
