I've learnt so much from Dominic - a real expert with a rare quality - he knows how to put his ideas across in a way that makes it easy to understand the process.
The 'antique' dealers would whip repro furniture with short lengths of old bike chain to get the distressed look.

I worked at a printers for years, I remember making a "top" for a table with one of the old plates off the printing machines. Took me back to them days watching you cut the metal. I can't remember what I cut it with but the plate was as sharp as anything. Took my back to the good old days watching you cut it to shape 👍

I did a stint for 5 years as a French polisher and we would distress reproduction furniture with a knobbly old piece of rock to make it antique distressed, loved the vintage sign.

This reminds me of an old "Perishers" comic strip. Maisie points to an old "Camp Coffee" sign, saying you know that it's old, because it goes clang when you throw stones at it.

Really great results! Just a thought on your order of operations - it looks like you did a dark wash (that wasn't covered in the video) before painting the details, but you didn't bang it up until almost the end! With prop making, often you'll distresses the surface, followed by the dark wash to fill in all the little bits introduced by the distressing that dirt naturally accumulates in, and then you go in with the detailing of rust, wear, etc. If you don't already watch his Tested videos, Adam Savage is a master of distressing props!

Nice final product. The aging and weathering are for me the easy part, I started weathering car and other models as a kid.
The hard part, for me, would be the part you didn't show, doing the layout for the lettering! Getting the spacing just right, the width of the letters, that kind of thing makes me crazy.

    Hi Dom, love your show.
Couple of gems you might like to know about.
1.When using paint stripper apply as quickly as possible then cover with cling wrap. This prevents the volitilies from evaporating and will remove maybe twice as much old paint.
    2. Removing rust. Here in Aussie we soak the rusted part into mollasses for a week or so.
Not sure if you can get mollasses in the UK as it is a by-product of sugar making. Only costs abour 1 pound for 5 gals. here.
    Cheers.
    Aussie Keith

I've been really interested in learning what goes into doing the old ceramic sign painting. I imagine it is a lot like pottery in that you probably paint like a standard sign painter, but with ceramic paints and you "fire" the sign in an oven or kiln? Probably also can involve either screen printing or lithography.
