    The 1986 'The Fly' does what the 1982 'The Thing' does to the 50s original. Takes an already good B-movie, shakes it up and takes it into another shocking and fantastic direction.

    • @jekw23

      Couldn’t agree more. The Blob doesn’t get enough respect, it’s an amazingly well crafted and entertaining movie. The Fly and The Thing are fantastic but if I had to choose one……The Thing, I could watch that movie on repeat.

      The difference is 80's remakes were made because they wanted to do the original idea justice with (at the time) modern effects, a bigger budget, taking the concept more seriously, etc etc. Whereas now there is no interest in actually making a good film. They're just cash grabs.

    Like Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, & many other movies of the era, I love the pacing of The Fly; the slow build to the big bad or horror. No overused tropes or cheap jump scares.
    Jeff Goldblum is a master class in this film; your heart breaks for Seth Brundle, not only with the slow deterioration of the man he once was, but especially in that final scene where his last flicker of humanity wants to be put out of its misery & he places the barrell of the rifle to his head 💔

  • @evanmarschand9930
    @evanmarschand9930 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This film is incredibly powerful. Jeff Goldbloom and Gina Davis act their asses off, really selling the scenario with such legitimate emotions. Like Minty said, the movie speaks to so many of us on a deep level because it works as a profound metaphor for the universal experience of aging, or suffering from or watching a loved one suffer from a terminal illness. You can also easily see parallels with the process of becoming addicted or watching someone you love become addicted to hard drugs.
    Beyond the amazing, incredibly grotesque practical effects and fantastic acting there lies such a poignant story of loss. Because of this, it will forever remain one of my favorite films.

It was filmed in Vancouver Canada at B.C. Hearing Markie scream helplessly as he realizes that his wrist bone has been snapped, and watching the blood come out of it, is one of the most chilling things I’ve ever seen. I can only imagine how gruesome a new Fly movie would look with today’s CGI technology. The 50s fly was cool and disturbing when I was a kiddo. I remember seeing it on late night tv and that last fly with the human head yelling “help me!” It was unexpected.
    I grew up largely with the 1986 Fly. That movie has it all. Gore, freak outs, possibly one of the best orchestrated soundtracks. And of course Jeff Goldblum is awesome in everything he does.

    Long before the Hulk came out in 2003, I was dreaming of a big screen Incredible Hulk movie. My top two choices for playing Bruce Banner we're David Duchovny and Jeff Goldblum. I really thought Goldblum would have been perfect. But that never happened. But Goldblum did go on to play the Grandmaster and Hulk was his #1 champion. He was great in that role.

      I did as well. I’d heard about how gross it was, but it blew me away at just how good Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis were. Once you get past the make-up effects (which were very good), you’re left with essentially an acting clinic. By the end, the viewer feels quite a bit of sadness for all involved.

    Even though Seth gets gruesome, this was the movie where we saw that skinny Jeff Goldblum had “transformed” into hunky Jeff Goldblum. I’ll be forever grateful. And it just hit me, there’s no way that his emergence as shaved Mac from the capsule-like contraption at the beauty parlor in Earth Girls Are Easy wasn’t a nod to his first emergence as Seth from the transportation pod. Since he and Geena were in both movies, I’m gonna have to go back and look for more Easter eggs.
