      Alan, please share with the world all of the things you give away for free to the world. Can you post the URL where I can get some of your free stuff? 99.9999% of my knowledge I do give away for FREE on my website. Isn't that enough to fit into your Socialist model that you talk about but don't preach? Do you work for FREE? If not, why? Why would you expect me to work for free?

    I am having a deck with PT wood built. They tell me to wait 1 year before I stain it. But it has cracks in it already. should I stain the deck now or wait, and what type of stain do you recommend? Please tell me asap, Thank you

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  ปีที่แล้ว

      Stain it now. Use a product that is not a film former - one made with synthetic resins.

    Tim you have a video showing what you say it's the best stain according to your test. But in your video you say the stained piece of wood was left in your garage for two years, what kind of test is that from my understanding all wood are exposed to rain and sunlight

      If you were tasked with determining the amount of color fade and UV damage to a deck stain, outdoor furniture fabric, house paint, etc., how would you do that? How could you measure what the object looked like the day it was stained vs what it looks like 2,3, or 5 years later having been in the sun?

    Hello sir! My husband just built steps with treated 2x12’s. Because of weather we haven’t been able to stain/seal it yet. A few days ago we noticed significant cracks on 3 of the steps. It rained and they were gone. Is there something we should put in the cracks once it dries again before we put on the stain/sealer? We’re doing it this weekend but I don’t want the cracks to come back AFTER it’s stained. These were only installed a month ago! We can’t believe what we’re seeing. Thanks for your help

    I have a wood deck that is 3 days old and already have 6 deck boards starting to split. Yet the deck builder says to wait a year to seal the deck. At this rate I will be replacing the boards in year. Why is lumber in the USA horrible? My dad said in the 70 and 80’s wood was much better and pressure treatment back then would last 20 yrs easily. So now the question.. do I seal immediately or should this wood be going back to the lumber retailer?

      It's ALWAYS BEST for you to go to my website first for the answers. I have a TON of stuff there about *deck maintenance*, when you're supposed to seal the wood, what sealer to use, and WHY the lumber is cracking and the old lumber didn't. Go here: www.AsktheBuilder.com

    Hey, watched your video. Went to the description but my device is not allowing me to go to the link so therefore I'm not able to see what sealer you used on your deck. Is this product good for wood fences as well? I'm in Florida and I had a board on board fence installed about 9 months ago and now the posts and pickets are splitting like crazy.

    Can a proper paint job do as well at preventing treated lumber from cracking as a sealer can?

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paint is a film former. In almost all cases, it will peel in short order.

    Tim, I had a deck built last April (2020) using pressure treated pine. After the wood passed the spoon of water absorption test, I radial sanded it and applied a heavy coat of water-based stain from Home Depot. By the end of the year, this new deck began to show signs of cracking and rippling on the surface, almost as it it was a veneer. Plus, there are black moldy spots wherever the wood is exposed to rain. I feel defeated, having worked so hard to get this right. What do you recommend?

    What if your pressure treated fence posts are already cracked? They are a year old, part of a cedar picket fence, 6 feet high, so the posts are a little taller than 6 feet. No one warned me about cracking, so I did not seal them. What now?

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple. Go here, read and WATCH my video on this page. Get the sealer I used: www.askthebuilder.com/boat-dock-sealer/

    Is it recommended to use both stain and a sealer or just one of the two?

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer sealers that are a penetrating stain and have deep color.

  • @marklaffey7972

    So how long do you need to let treated lumber dry before sealing?

    • @askthebuilder
      @askthebuilder  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As soon as a large drop of water soaks into the spring wood within 20 seconds as you see in the video. But ALWAYS before you ever see ONE TINY check crack as you see in the video.
