  • Finally managed to get some fishing footage of catching Dusky Flathead at Alva Beach just south of Townsville. The day started very gloomy with lots of rain and wind. Hope you can take something away from watching this video. I touched on it the video, but the best tip for catching Flathead from the beach is to make your first cast well before you get to the edge of the water, then make your next casts up the sides of the beach. Nine times out of Ten Flathead will be laying not more then a meter from the waters edge. This is my First video edit of using the Go Pro. Please enjoy!

Sonny Jennings We have fished there pretty much any tide and any time of the tide and still caught fish. However we usually aim for a 6am hightide or there abouts. I find the bigger tides tend to be better because where we fish on the sand bar the high tides allow the flathead to get up on near the top in the more shallow waters. As the tide goes out just work your way along the beach. Don't move from a spot too quick before moving on and always try the spot again at a different part of the tide. I would say 70% of my flathead are caught no more than 4m from the bank. Look for the the long diamond shapes on the beach near where the high tide marks are and can see where flathead sit. I pretty much only use squidgys around the 65 - 70mm and white or the pink one with small lead with some 15lb flurocarbon leader.
Throw your lure even when your 5-10m from the edge of the water. Most of the time you'll spook the flathead before you get to cast at them. thats why i'll cast along the bank first before moving along. Look for soft sand as its easier for them to ambush bait. You don't have to waste much time in casting out as far as you can. Most of my fish came out of 2 feet of water at most and always work the lure right back to the bank as you'll get plenty of hits as you go to pull the lure from the water. All this even works from any side the beach. At really low tide you can walk over to the sand bars. Hope it helps you.
