Making an Enamel Pin Kickstarter | Steps I Took to Create My First Kickstarter

  • Hello guys! 💚
    In today's video, I wanted to do a continuation of my video from last week where I made a reaction video to my first Kickstarter! This week, I wanted to elaborate a little more on how I researched my first pin Kickstarter and the steps I took before I launched it. There isn't a lot of information regarding making enamel pins and using Kickstarter for it, so I hope this video can kind of shed light as to what needs to take place before you can make an awesome Kickstarter. I'm not a pro by any means, and this video was created only to help give you an idea of what you might want to do if you're doing this for the first time. I can't guarantee you will achieve the same results as I did, so please take what I say with a grain of salt! :)
    ✨ HOW I CALCULATED MY INITIAL GOAL: ✨
    As I stated in my video, I really am not sure if this is the best solution to figure out how much to account for shipping in your goal(s), but my friend had told me to calculate a buffer amount for shipping:
    1.) Figure out how much in total it will cost to make a pin (ex. 100 pins = $200USD)
    2.) Figure out how much you want to sell them for in your Kickstarter (ex. $10 / pin) and then divide the cost of the total by the price per pin to calculate how many people at minimum you will need to break even! In this case, the answer is 20 people or backers.
    3.) Take the average cost of shipping. This is the hardest part because you don't know where your backers will be coming from. Just try your best and take a guess of where most will be from. I took the average of US, Canada, UK, and Australia / Asian countries to arrive at the average.
    (3.50 + 11 + 13 + 17 ) / 4 countries = ~$11.
    **I then used this amount and plugged that in pretty much for every country, except for the US (which I priced at $4 shipping) and Singapore / Japan / Australia (at $12-13 USD), although I don't believe I got any backers from those countries. **
    Multiply 20 backers by $11 = $220 for shipping buffer.
    Add the $220 + $200 (to make the pins) = $420 USD
    4.) Account for shipping supplies and Kickstarter fees. KS takes about 10% from your total.
    10% of $420 is $42.
    $420 + $42 = $462 USD. Don't forget to add extra if you need shipping supplies! This will be your initial goal.
    This was how I arrived at the $400 initial goal. You can decrease it as you make your stretch goals because shipping supplies should not cost you too much afterward, especially when you're buying supplies in bulk on Amazon :P
    I hope this video helped you guys out. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away and hopefully I can answer it for you :)

    thank you so much for posting these vids. it seems to be any pin kickstarters, and how they go, is kept like some trade secret nobody wants to give away. this has overall calmed many anxiety's ive had when trying to start my own pin Kickstarter.

      I'm very happy it has helped you out a bit! It was very nerve wracking for me in the beginning cuz I didn't quite get it..and even now I'm gonna have to revisit my own video when I wanna make a future Kickstarter cuz I forgot what to do 😂 it's not a perfect method and it may not work for everyone but I hope it works for you!

    thank you for the tips!! do you have any tips on getting your kickstarter some exposure? i don't really have social media

    • @Tiramaesu_
      @Tiramaesu_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely had to have a social media presence to get seen, especially because I don't have any friends or family members that are really into enamel pins! I had been marketing myself in advance before my kickstarter even began so people could anticipate it. If you have family and friends that are into what you're trying to do, you could try word of mouth and just hope the algorithm on the kickstarter website will help bring you enough traffic. I really highly recommend you do establish social media presence though, because it can be a major boost!

    Great advice, thank you! Would you mind please sharing which manufacturer you used for the pins? I had a bad first experience with the "middleman" route. Now would love to go direct, next time. Out of 200 pins, about 50 percent had to be redone, due to substandard quality control... Did you find it to be similar or better odds with your manufacturer? If you did, did they redo them for you at no extra cost? Thank you again!!

      Hi I'm sorry for the big delay in response, I wasn't notified of any unread comments on this video! I used a manufacturer on alibaba called Shenzhen Longzhiyu to manufacturer these. I would say they were more on the affordable side out of the other manufacturers I got a quote from (unfortunately don't remember the other names), and I am not sure how defective yours came out, but out of 100 pins of one design, id probably get 20-ish that id call a seconds pin (I didn't categorize them as B - C pins like others do). I would say it didn't happen to all of my designs though! My one onion ring design in particular had more seconds than other designs in this series. But to answer your other question, they weren't bad enough to where I felt the need to ask them to remake it so I unfortunately don't have experience with that! By defects, I meant small black dots or specks especially by the edge of the metal and the colored parts. I apologize how late my response is but I hope it helps!

    Hello! great video, I am looking into creating pins for my artwork and I just wanted to ask a few questions! when you talk about doing the 50/50 payment, are both these payments after you have completed the kickstarter fund? how did you go about getting the pins created/ perfected/ sampled without the funds? the other question I have is after you make your initial goal, shouldn't the stretch goal for making the second pin still be $420 following the formula from the first pin? - to cover the cost of manufacture and shipping? how were you able to decrease it to $300 without making a loss? (maybe my maths isn't good but It is confusing me a bit!) thank you!

    • @Tiramaesu_
      @Tiramaesu_  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So for me, I started pin production after the kick starter funds were given to me so yes, the 50/50 payment were after the kickstarter ended. Some artists who have some extra money will sometimes start pin production before it even ends but that's because they're more confident and optimistic that they will meet the goal! as for sampling them, you can most definitely request for a sample however know that you will have to pay a separate fee for receiving a sample. If you would rather sample it, then definitely put that into your budget or Kickstarter goal! For me, I just tried to research the company to the best of my ability to see if they have previous work done by other artists and I researched the acceptable flaw rate, so when I graded the pins, I know what was acceptable. There's no 'perfect' batch of pins because they're handmade so I definitely would not go into the pin making game expecting perfection by any means: you can probably find a few "perfect" pins in your batch but it all really depends on how close you're inspecting your pins. The initial goal was set up so I would receive most of the shipping and packing funds from there, so you wouldn't need to set the goal for the stretch as high cause you wouldn't need as much supplies anymore at that point, if that makes sense. I hope this helps!

      @@Tiramaesu_ Thank you! I'm still a bit confused about the stretch goals, so does this mean the initial $400 is enough to cover the outgoing shipping for the next stretch items? say you got the 20 people to back your first pin and that is $200 from the initial funding gone, then would the $220 for shipping these items out only be used for those 20 backers? How did you calculate the shipping cost of the next tier to only be $100 when in the first one it was $220? (if the 2nd pin is still $200 to make 100)? did you set a limit for how many of the 100 ordered pins that people could back? Sorry for all the questions, it seems impossible to find answers online about this!

    • @Tiramaesu_
      @Tiramaesu_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgier3910 basically that guide I had explained about decreasing the rest of the cost as you hit stretch goals was part of the guide I personally found though it didn't offer much more of an explanation than that. However, the deal with the shipping is that you were just creating a safety net for yourself in case you have people that are international buyers that want to back your project. I basically charged the US and Canada the proper shipping amount so they would pay for shipping in full, and also UK I think. However, for countries that are farther away from me like Singapore or Australia it would have cost like $17 for shipping but I did not charge that amount, I only charged like $14 because I don't want them to feel too deterred by the shipping. This is where I put my shipping funds into. I didn't get many international backers at all though so I didn't even really get to use the money I allotted for that, but it instead went into other things. I wish I could explain more and offer a more concrete reason but part of this guide is up to an individual's interpretation or decision as to how much to set aside for x and dependent upon you guessing where the majority of your backers will come from. Basically, you can definitely just make it the same amount as your first goal but I didn't do that and in the end, it turns out I didn't need to

    Hi, I was wondering. On the financial part when you creating your kickstarter.:How do you manage it? Do you put the total cost with all of your future strech goal and you put the initial goal for 1 design like you showed us? Also for the taxes, do you consider it in your estimation and your initial goal? I don't know if I express myself well, but thanks in advance!

    • @Tiramaesu_
      @Tiramaesu_  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Lydia! I apologize for the huge delay in response - I wasn't notified I had unread messages on this video untill now! For my Kickstarter, I had put the cost of my first design plus the other misc things like tax and shipping fees into the first goal. The stretch goals would be to fund the future designs as well as any misc costs that would be associated with buying and packing those new items. Being that I made this video a while ago, there may be better videos of methods done to calculate the cost you should put for your Kickstarter but this is what I did at the time. I hope this helps out despite being very late!

    Hii! I have been working on getting my campaign set up but I have become very confused on if I am suppossed to profit from my campaign or just get enough funds to make the pins. I would think you would want to price tiers so you can make a profit, but I have have seen conflicing things. 😓 Also, with shipping, I thought that you could calculate how much shipping is for each contitenet and/or country and depending on the backers location their shipping price will vary to that amount you calculated for their region. Also, would you still need to factor in the shipping price to your stretch goals since I thought the shipping was charged extra to the backer after they select the reward tier they want?

    Thank u so much for this information! I have 5 designs but I'm thinking of making 50pins for each design since I'm not sure how I'll do. Is that too little? Originally I was gonna do 20 to 35 pins for each design

    • @Tiramaesu_
      @Tiramaesu_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not too little, it depends on what you want to accomplish and how much of a demand you've got. If you know the pins will be a huge hit then definitely go for the 100 count because you'll get a lower price per pin, but 50 is fine as well! I don't really know of manufacturers that are okay with making less than 50 so you'll have to look around, but again, there's no wrong answer for the amount of pins per design that you get!

      I'm glad you found this video helpful!! With all things considered and after getting myself a label printer (recommended esp if you get a huge Kickstarter with lots of backers) and buying more packaging materials than I anticipated + the time I put in packaging them all, I think I didn't really make any profits. It definitely helps to boost it with your own money but that is NOT recommended LOL! For my Kickstarter, it was a struggle unlocking like the last 2 pins and since I'm not like those artists who get everything fully funded in 24-48 hrs, it kind of discouraged people... but it usually is very worth it since you're not (usually) spending your own money to make a bunch of pins :)
