I did not realise that this is the guy who was playing on hundreds of these hits that we all have been listening to for so long.. Genius.

Maybe my favorite song by the Monkees. This riff is LITERALLY the ringtone on my iPhone. Thank you, Mr. Sheltonn. And to you John, for the interview and video.

One of the best studio guitar stories I’ve ever heard was Louie Shelton creating the guitar part for the song ‘Valerie’. From what I heard, the first take was the one they kept.

Last Train To Clarksville is one of my favourite songs ever & a lot of what I love is the guitar sound & playing. Some people are touched by God & Louie is one of those people!

Thank you so much for this fantastic interview with a guitar hero I will begin to research more thoroughly. I am 70 now and was a teenager who liked the Monkees for the comedy and the music, but felt totally ripped off by learning they used studio musicians for virtually all instrumentation. Today you corrected an incorrect 'fact' I have believed since I heard it on our local classic rock station when the song was replayed in the late 1980's. The DJ stated the lead guitar on this song and on "Valleri" was played by Glen Campbell. Glen was a studio guitarist with the Wrecking Crew at the time & definitely had the chops to play astounding lead guitar. So thanks for updating my poor rock education; and great praise to Mr Louie Shelton.

Sitting here at 72, can remember this stuff like it was yesterday. This guy was the guitarist on Glenn Campbells' stuff! Think about that.

Eliot Randall did the same thing with the solo on Reelin' In The Years. He just made it up right then and there! Apparently, he nailed it on the 1st take but the engineer forgot to hit the record button. So Randall nailed it again on the 2nd take when they actually recorded the lead. By the way, I have been playing the guitar for 40+ years. It took me forever to get that Reelin' In The Years solo. Randall did it in less than a minute. Oh, Louie's a master.

Holy smokes John these amazing guys are doing interview after interview. This and the Rich Williams vids today, awesome.
Also, to the point about reading music as a guitar player (raises hand), back in music school was when I learned the old joke-
Q: How do you get a guitar player to turn the volume down?
A: Put sheet music in front of them. 😂

There has to be a level of discerment involved tho, Louie must've been going for some style/sound with what he was auditioning, someone's style on such-and-such, there had to have at least been some discussion as to what he was going to play between he and whever he was sonically weaving with, he makes it sound like the red light went on and they all just played blindly along with wherever their fingers went, nothing was learned here

What is it about Arkansas guitarist. Louie, Glen Campbell know nothing about the guitar and theory they can just do it.
