- Phillip Scott reports on a newspaper article from 10/2/1918 out of Greenville, South Carolina. Them folks were upset that Black women didn't want to work for them. They made a law forcing Black women to work in their homes.

My grandmother used to tell us about how her mother (my great grandmother) used to take care of yt people, families, and their children. My grandmother and her sister had to grow up really fast to help with the six children my great grandmother had. Our great grandfather had already passed. He died in the mill from a heat stroke.
My grandmother said her mother use to work twice as hard on Saturdays. She had to cook enough food on Saturday to stretch out till Sunday. Wash all the clothes, remember clothes were being washed by hands and ran through a ringer. After my great grandmother got out of church on Sunday she had to go to their house and iron their clothes fold them or hang them up in the closet. Then bathe their children tidy up the house. Wash any dishes and make sure school clothes were out and ready for the next day. And the husband work clothes was out and ready for the next day as well.
So this is why black American women had to grow up fast. They became the mother of the home while mom or dad worked. Or mom if the father wasn’t available.
Those laws are probably still on the books today If they have not been revised.

Here's a tidbit for our family regarding lineage-based qualifications: if the applicant (or applicant's forefathers) arrived in this country by Visa (i.e. naturalization, Ellis Island, etc.) then they DON'T qualify for OUR lineage-based benefits! Let the burden of proof be on the government since they have all our records anyway. (We can keep ancestry in our back pockets, if need be) Peace

I remember one day while I was at work. I was approached by one of those folks to solve a problem. When I presented my solution, I was told that I was LAZY, because I didn't do it the way they suggested. I must have had a flash back of an ancestor because, I was pissed. All day long, all I could think of was those folks, on top of their horses, degrading my ancestors cracking their whips, calling them lazy. To this day that still bothers me.

You just described the scene in the movie color purple. Where the white woman Miss Millie was trying to force Sophia’s daughter to come be her maid. Sophia said no. So the white men including sherif attacked Sophia and tossed her in prison. Because she wouldn’t work for them. And after all the years in prison with hard labor had broken her body once released from prison she her self was forced to be Miss Millie’s maid.
