    While I'm not opposed to a space theme version of survive, with how they did it, I think mechanisms don't fit with the theme nearly as well as in the island version. For example, the different thickness's of the tiles and how the thinner ones go away first makes perfect sense for a sinking island. But, it doesn't make nearly as much with an exploding space station. Same with the people being left in the open afterwards. And the differences of the monsters also makes more sense with the original.

      That's what i was going to say. Sinking island theme is more suiting. This is not some Legendary game that you can paste anything on :))

    The warp gate warps you to Atlantis.

      Then you have to play that game with your remaining pieces to determine the final winner!

    I like the theme of this version better...looks like a lot of fun and this is something I may pick up

    The tiles are much harder to differentiate than the old version. I picked up a copy of the vintage "Escape from Atlantis" version which has Heroscape-ish tiles and plastic creatures, it looks WAY better. I'm not opposed to a space theme, but as they didn't deck it out as well as it was in the vintage version it seems to me to be motivated more by a quick buck...

      Its not thaaaat much harder to differentiate. you guys make it sound like its rocket science loll.

    Tom, you demonstrated that the turrets can fire in a straight line through the space station, (by the way you showed it with your hand gestures) but in the rules it says that the turrets cannot fire through the station. They can only fire through to the open space, through drifters and ships.

    Like you, I usually eat up sci-fi themes in board games. I like the dynamic that the guns and the one-man ships (fighters) add. But the monsters look so generic and the space station tiles look too similar to each other. Visually, it just looks lackluster compared to the regular reprint, in spite of how much I wanted to like this space theme revision of it. This definitely helped my decision-making along a bit.

    I like to see the Top 10 Dice Tower Videos of All-Time. I think the one with the trash truck at the end is my #1.

    when he removed the tile with the fighter jet 4:04, and the meeple fell "into outer space hahaha" he made a mistake and the meeple should automatically be placed into the jet. If there is no type of space ship under the tile then yes they should fall into outer space "hahaha"

    I don't have any of the original SURVIVE! Games but this one looks fun even if I wanted to add it to my collection without having any of the other versions. Thanks for the review Tom. :D

    Tom sounds like he's trying to make this sound as dark
    as possible... or was it meant as black comedy all along?
    (And don't we all love the "escape from an exploding station" genre?)

    Looks like a re-skin with less attractive visuals. It seems sort of unnecessary. I thought it would be more interesting. Disappointing for me (as a Survive fan).

      +VideoGameTakeOut Same here. I love Survive! Escape from Atlantis from the gameplay to the visuals. Although I pre-ordered this from being such a huge fan; based on the components and new tile actions that I've seen, I think I'll enjoy the original a lot more, as well as my friends.
      The original is also more welcoming and easy to teach. It makes it seem like a friendly game when it's truly vicious. You focus on escaping while the game itself kind of pushes you to attack, while this version seems to put more emphasis on battling each-other rather than focusing on the escape itself.

    I like Survive Atlantis a little bit better, but I also like playing this version from time to time.

    I have the original(1982), the remake and this version. I prefer the remake. The remake has plastic boats, beefier tiles (vs the original) plus the expansions are great.

    Looks cool, but I have the original so I will keep it and pass on this version.

    This seems like a very unnecessary version of a game, made with the least amount of effort, to catch a few sci-fi enthusiasts...
    I'm not sure we need such games in the market, so a shame they didn't do something new instead.

    • @suntzugames
      @suntzugames 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jesse Whitehead Yea, very gray in gray-ish... shame they didn't just go for maybe 2 small expansions for the original one instead, like adding some harpoon boat, or something similar to gain the features that this one has.
      In the end, I think it's a somewhat bland attempt at catering to sci-fi people.. but if you really want sci-fi survival, there are plenty of better choices out there.

      ***** 100% agree. Add a bunch of unwanted fiddly pieces and a less entertaining theme to a classic, fast, and fun game. Does Julian get royalties for this game or is this a way to jettison him into the cold void of space?

    • @gengelstein
      @gengelstein 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      retroarcadefan To prevent any misunderstanding, Julian was totally on board for this project, and receives royalties. We required that before we would work on the project.

    • @suntzugames
      @suntzugames 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geoffrey Engelstein I'd also add to the prevention of misunderstandings by saying I'm not judging this by it's game design... I've tried several of your games Geoffrey and the don't disappoint :)

      I'm thinking more in terms of the business decision here - I mean, we go all crazy when we hear about Jurassic or Marvel Monopoly, but I get the sense that the very same decision went into the creation of this re-themed version of Survive, and I'm not really a fan of such trends :(

      I've played the original and much prefer it to this one. I do like the idea of the turrets and fighters. The divets in the pods and fighters are a nice touch. But overall the aesthetic is less engaging and doesn't marry well with the gameplay design as neatly as it's predecessor.
      The monsters are much less intuitive and lack character, the guns look pretty ugly and uninspired, and the tiles are actually pretty generic looking. All of this loses a huge amount of charm versus the original. This is one I'll play in a boardgame café but it's not one for my own shelf. The original is intuitive to understand; the board, tiles and tokens are much more visually appealing and this gives it elegance as a pick-up-and-play family game as well as a spite-fest with more invested boardgame pals. I've just ordered the original over this space themed variant, and hope that harpoon guns and harpoon boats make it in as a future expansion.
