I have purchased a Kelty 16 and will be (practicing tomorrow) then trying this configuration somewhere along the Buffalo National River in AR. I also watched your video on how to ensure it's fully waterproof (thank you for the heads-up). Thank you so much for all you share.

What better time than when North Florida is experiencing 16-20 degree Fahrenheit weather with a wintery mix. Will be using this tarp allot when setting up in the Alabama and Florida swamps during the winter and rainy months. Will let you know how it goes and thanks for the video. 23 1/2 years retired Navy here. Thank you for your service Brother!

Excellent video! Just the kind of rain set up I was looking for. I found the Kelty 16 Noah's Tarp(Arc) on close out. Did a shake down set up In the garage, the corners practically fold in on there own. It's huge inside!! I had to sacrifice all the biners and cam locks, too much backpack weight. Still works great! Thanks for making this video. You did a great job simplifying things and making them very easy to duplicate including the tarp set up as well as the truckers hitch not on the Ridgeline. Appreciate your efforts
Thanks Brad! I spent a couple years trying to figure out how to accomplish this...I wish there was a video of this at the time. Lol. We love passing it along!
That's a nice set up for cold weather camping in a hammock , might call it a hammock inside a tent. Here in the semi-tropics ( Florida ) I like to have mine open so there is viability all the way around and some good ventilation. Even with it set up that way I have stayed dry in some of our worst storms. My Blackbird and the Warbonnet Minifly is my choice. The Warbonnet Minifly ( Bushwack camo ) replaced my cuben fiber tarp. The cuben fiber tarp stood out like a sore thumb and was loud in a rain.
Great set-up man. I got the Kelty Noah 12 and I'm gonna be using it for backpacking in the rain. I can't wait to use your set-up. Thanks for the great video.
@@RiverKingsKayak and if you pass the working end thu the loop twice you wont hafe to worry about tying the working end off while holding tension on the line.
I like how you use the Nite-Ize 'cheater,' as your ridgeline tensioner when weight doesn't matter. I usually go with a trucker's hitch there, but I might have to get the cam-cheater. My favorite 'cheat' to make a trucker's hitch on my ridgeline is using a 'third' prussic as the loop for my trucker's hitch on the ridgeline. I don't enjoy having to move my first (pulley) loop a few inches and not having an easy way to do it. The third prussic is my answer. The first two are the tarp-tensioning prussics. The third one allows the anchor loop to easily move to exactly where I want it so it doesn't interfere with my tensioning prussic or my hammock suspension. The Nite-Ize actually seems to be a hell of a clever way of achieving this for a little extra weight. It can be argued that a tight ridgeline isn't necessary when using two tarp-tensioning prussiks on the ridge, but we all know tighter tarps are happier tarps, especially in wind and snow. Also have you ever added a puller loop inside your prussics? If you're set up for several days at a time and re-tensioning is required, another loop of cord looped within the prussic gives a great handle to pull on for loosening/tightening and adjusting the tarp as required. It also makes removal a lot easier if your tarp has been set up and progressively tensioned over the course of several days or weeks.
River Kings : Thanks for the heads up on aluminum and steel?I presume. Hey, while I got you here: have you heard of Chill Gorilla Tarps? Is he USMC? If he is, that's wonderful and I'm buying one of his tarps. I'm worried though that he may not be...I hope I'm wrong. You seem like a guy that might know that sort of thing. I know you're not a regular river-rat.
I can share? I used to have separate net made for travel hammocks but not attached. It hung from the ridge and drooped around underneath the hammock and had holes you could string the ropes through and then cinch it down. And when it was set up it looked like a giant pair of underwear and I called it the hammock panties! And in east Texas you always need a bug net!! The one thing I see about this is how I really prefer a breeze and a view. Visibility is a big part of safety in my opinion. But this def has its purpose for privacy/stealth and storms and getting that surrounding temp up so you don't freeze from convection. Its good to know how to do this with an ordinary tarp. It looks like a specialty product! Does your hammock have a bottom entry that shuts tight when you lay on it? This and the shape are the Hennessey's distinctions.
Yes I'm familiar with those mosquito Nets. The beauty for this hammock is like the Hennessy, the mosquito net is built in. This does not have the bottom entry with velcro. this is a zippered entry were you zip off the mosquito net and lay down. zip it back up if you want it or leave it unziped if you don't need it because it's cooler weather. No need for that extra bug net.
Right on Jason! Just be aware that Kelty has changed their production on this tarp and the new ones require some waterproofing. For the life of me, I have no idea why they did that. I used a 16 and a 12 both for over a decade with zero leaks or issues. The new ones did not have the same water repellency...But after a quick spray, they are working fine.
That's pretty sweet but the best hammock camping tarps I've seen all have stove jacks so they can be used as hot tents with lightweight woodstoves. I've got one but it's not for backpacking, it's way too heavy. I bought it for it's durability and ability to handle heavy snowloads. Sparks don't burn right through it either. You've got time to smack the tent to knock them off. I knocked one spark off and it didn't leave a mark of any kind.
finally...someone that likes the Kelty Noah 16. i have been asking in all of the forums what people think of it and to a person that all say good tarp but to heavy. i want something that's gonna last and that i can use in all conditions. so now i am vindicated in my thinking that this is the way to go. thanks BTW can you show any other ways you set it up?
Robert Young, yes, I will make a follow up vid. I have three other configs. The two heavy crowd are of the weightless cult of backpacking. If you have enough money to keep replacing slightly brittle and fragile gear then you can have a 25lb full loadout backpack. That is very attractive to many. Those used to working with the military know rucks can weigh well over 100lbs with emphasis on ruggedness and 100% preparedness. somewhere in the middle further towards lightweight is where I am. The kelty's are awesome! Thanks for watching.
Thanks WE, I have used everything and this is the best cold weather config out there. In the summer it is just too hot. I haven't used a tent in years. The last time was in Alaska on a caribou hunt where there are just no trees. I'm sure you will love it. We need to hit the river here soon.
I do it slightly different I use the cam jams as a continues ridge line and clip them round the tree and back onto the tabs on my tarp pulling the tarp centre and tight
right on carl! That's one of the fun Parts about this Hobby! There's a million ways to do it, you just got to find the way you like and that suits your needs.
River Kings very true we all have our own ways I suppose Iv just got back from the shop with a budget tarp in the wrong colour and I’m still gonna use it instead of my DD super light just because I like the shape of it 🤣
Thanks PO. I hate to tell my buddy Keith, but the thin velcro he uses makes a better seal by far. The snaps are lighter and less bulky. I love this set up...rock solid.
Good info. I have not had trouble with mine. My hennessey has definitely passed the durability test with 500 nights+. I have a couple hundred in the warbonnet with no issues. Sorry yours was not up to speed.
AWESOME VIDEO BRO... Just ordered mine because of your video... Thanks but FYI Walmart.com has silver heavy duty same size tarp you can use if you're trying to conserve $$$ everyone... Just sayin'... $33 IT'S HALF THE PRICE and for side anchor points 4 small smooth rocks or even marbles work, even those lil decorative glass rocks will do... Looks big enough to even make a Bushcraft cot inside it with a couple sheets... 👌👍 But Again AWESOME VIDEO BRO... THANK YOU AGAIN...
A big disadvantage to using those blue tarps is if there is any wind, you will hear the tarp crinkle. But I get your point, the price of some these tarps that get shilled on youtube are prohibitive.
To keep water from running down the tarp and hammock ropes, wrap an 8” (or so) piece of plastic around the tree, tie your ropes on the plastic, then fold the plastic over the ropes creating a small valley for the water to flow away from the ropes. It will require two for the hammock and two for the tarp. I used this technique in the Vietnam jungles for 9 months. Otherwise the water will run down the tree, down the ropes and into your hammock.
That sounds interesting! I never have issues with the water as I employ drip lines at the suspension connections...but I like the idea and have never heard of this! Thanks Phil!!
bout to try this 16 set up in the Raywah wilderness in CO..temps get into the low 30s at night(and i like being comfortable, encloser is key along w staying above ground!) i use a grand trunk skeeter beater(bugs get thick by the lake)pack comin in @ 17-18lbs total weight w 2-3 days of dry food & kitchen..try and handline some trout whenever possible ..good set up man..preciate!
@@RiverKingsKayak I'd like to see if it's possible with a 200x160 heat reflective groudsheet/tarp/survival blanket doodar to do something similar? if so maybe it will work well with my uco candle lantern at providing and reflecting some heat as this is always one issue with hammock camping. Then if that works it frees up my 300x300 DD tarp to function as a workshop/workspace cover. Which here in Ireland is kind of essential and the reason I usually go for a higher tarp with max ground area covered over more enclosed set-ups but I've a 2nd tarp ordered so I'm going to play around a little a find my sweet spot. Will keep you posted on my success
@@RiverKingsKayak I'm out now bud but my tarp isnt as large nor does it have as many attachment points. I'm rolling with a 3x3 DD tarp. Nevermind! I tried! Will have to wait till I get another tarp
I've been looking into a big tarp like this one, in fact it's sitting in my amazon cart. My wife likes to hammock side by side on same 2 trees, so I am needing something big enough to cover both and potentially close like you show in the video. I think it's just a matter of time before I buy it.
YakkelBerry, how do you put up two hammocks side by side on the same 2 trees. I've been trying to figure that out for awhile. Please email me at DannyJeaux@gmail.com and explain this. Thanks!
@@erickmyhosh2719, Same question, great answer!!! Here I am, thinking about hammocks banging together, sharp elbows, hard knees in soft places, etc... It's tough enough in a king size bed! Keeping it simple. Makes perfect sense. Cheers!!!
they do make a two person hammock junglehammock.com/product-category/hammocks/2-person-double-hammocks/ you will pay for it though. looks like a good design
Great video buddy! Do you happen to have a video or detail set up of your 40ft ridge line with those prusik knots? That's the best set up for a ridge line I've ever seen and it gives me a bunch of ideas for how to utilize more functionality for the ridge line. Too cool man!
Oh you are the man! Thank you so much for the link and reaching back to me! I love this set up and I can't wait to try your ridge line and Noah's Tarp set up.
Excellent video . Love the Kelty Noahs tarp 16 but they don't sell it anymore. Does anyone know where to get used? I can't sleep on the ground anymore and love winter camping so this large tarp would seal out the wind like a tent.
Wow, great video and set up. How tall is the ridge line in this set up or can you tell us your height for reference? We are a tall family and worry about height. We have the Dutchware Clark VX Ultra so need a wider tarp.
@@RiverKingsKayak haha, you're the first ever on TH-cam to mention my name. My real first name is Shadrach, so he's doing well. I drink beers with Abednego on weekends. Meshach is a punk though. Him and his husband ran off together to San Francisco.
That is a genius setup! I never found a way to make it year round in a hammock (east Texas) but this would help a lot! Any chance you can show this with mosquito net added?
too easy! I use a Warbonnet Blackbird hammock that has a built in mosquito net. It can zipper on or off depending on whether you need it or not. Cheers!
This is an awesome shelter. I've watched this many times since I first came across it a year or two ago. The idea of a fully enclosed tarp shelter is appealing for not just hammock camping, but perhaps winter camping with a cot. One tarp question to get your opinion on; you use the older putty Kelty tarp which is no longer available. DD has a 5x5 (meter) which I've seen someone make a similar shelter with. I'm a fan of Aquaquest tarps and they make a 15x15 (14'7" x 14'7"). That tarp is 1'5" shorter both directions. That will obviously have an impact on size, but I'm wondering if it would be close enough to still be able to stand in at 6'1". I wished I already had one that I could try out. I'd hate to buy a new tarp that size only to find out it's a little too small for that set-up.
I think it could work unless you are really tall. I am 5'6" and I reach as high as my arms can naturally when I hang the Ridgeline. It would def be a tad shorter, but I think I could work...
danny Haddox that is definitely a good one too. It is basically tying a prusik into itself. The only thing I dont like about the TLH for this application is that it is not quick release. Good comment!
Sorry if this has already been asked, but... It appears you have 5 points along each side for tie outs. So you can hang it square because you have a center tie out for the ridgeline. I think the (possibly) newer version only has 4 along each side removing the "middle" one. Can someone confirm this or am I possibly looking at the wrong one? Thanks in advance and great video River King! Anyone feel free to jump in if you have confirmed this
Thanks Benjamin! All the 16's I have ever seen come with 3 per side (not counting the corners). This allows that center pull out point. When you get down to the 12's and 9's, there are definitely fewer.
Like kayak camping, motorcycle camping offers a little more freedom to be comfortable. Weight and volume matter, but nobody in IBMC has titanium cookware. If you've had a long cold wet day, this looks like a really nice space to dry out at night. And maybe keep your dry bags unmuddied overnight too.
Kelly Noah 12 was my first tarp years ago. It’s durable for sure. DD hammocks makes a great selection of durable tarps aswell. Pretty cool setup you got. Have you seen the Nama claw hooks? $3 and I love it!
I have used many tarps. It just depends on your activity and budget. The Kelty 12 gives a lot of coverage for less investment but is heavy and big. The smaller lighter tarps are really nice but cost more and are preferable when backpacking. I have used the kelty 12 a lot on kayak camping trips. The 16 does not give good air flow.
Putting the ridge line under the tarp is a mistake. When raining, it will allow rain to travel down it then drip-drip-drip on you while sleeping all night long. Putting some drip lines on the ends will help a little, but it's best to put the ridge line above the tarp. :-)
I hear ya Eric! I have had probably 2000 nights under a Tarp over the years. Never had the issue with wicking and dripping. The prusiks help shed that water, dyneema doesn't wick and I also keep the span between trees as close to the width of the tarp as possible so there is little to no exposed line to gather water. I feel the tarp is much stiffer and secure with the structure of the Ridgeline supporting it.. . But alas...there are so many ways to do it and they all have their pros and cons!
Looks like a great shelter, fully enclosed. Im wanting to buy my first hammock soon, word on the street is the hennessy lets you lay at an angle allowing for a flatter sleep. You looked to be at an angle in that hammock, could you comment on this aspect for us beginners out here?
Yes, the asymmetric hammocks are def the way to go! The warbonnet is basically a perfected Hennessy. There is not a lot of difference between them. The warbonnet has a slight edge in lack of weight and comfort with the durability in Hennessy's favor from what I can tell. I have the gathered end types such as Eno and fox, but for me they are for lunch breaks and hanging around camp. The Warbonnet or Hennessy types are for sleeping.
i have been using a similar system with my ridgeline for ages, just a small l/weight karabiner on one end & a fig 9 on the other, much easier to undo when cold & wet atb Barrry
The tarp you link to is a diamond shaped tarp. All the tarps on the Kelty site are diamond shaped. Am I missing something here? Love the tarp though. Would like to know more about it. Thanks
What is the knot/method called that you attached to the ridge line with smaller chord for the S-biner? I do not clearly understand the term in the vid, something like crusix? Any help would be appreciated. Thx!

Yes, all good points!
Absolutely fricking sweet. I love it.
What a great setup. Thank you.
Pure genius! I learned a lot thank you !
Thanks Fives! Hope it helps!
Great set-up man. I got the Kelty Noah 12 and I'm gonna be using it for backpacking in the rain. I can't wait to use your set-up. Thanks for the great video.
Awesome. I think you are going to love it!
Thanks for sharing this nice video .I learn from you, woo ...great job
Right on kaho!!!
Thanks you answered sooo many questions with this video, subbed
Thanks jedicazador!
The knot is called a truckers hitch, if anyone wants to know
Thanks...I forgot to give out that information!
@@RiverKingsKayak and if you pass the working end thu the loop twice you wont hafe to worry about tying the working end off while holding tension on the line.
@@robertl.fallin7062 that's a good tip! I used to keep things a quick release as possible...but I will try this.
All great ideas! I will def try the tensioner loops! I think you will love the cam jam. Just be sure to get the aluminum one. Thanks Nathan!
I’m going to have to try this
I can share?
Great shelter set up! Thanks
Thanks LL!
If you tie one of the knots he used to hang things on either end of the ridge line in stops water from running in.
MAGA good ole drip line
@MAGA I like the channel name and great tip too!
Cool hammock and tarp
Great detailed setup information. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks and your welcome! Hope it helps!
Nice. Very informative. I have been looking into a windproof set up.
@@RiverKingsKayak Thanks! Just catching up on some of your vids now!
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome right on brother! Would love to head up your way and catch a river with you sometime!
Yes sir! I need to try one of those out! That is awesome about the spark retardant!
finally...someone that likes the Kelty Noah 16. i have been asking in all of the forums what people think of it and to a person that all say good tarp but to heavy. i want something that's gonna last and that i can use in all conditions. so now i am vindicated in my thinking that this is the way to go. thanks BTW can you show any other ways you set it up?
Robert Young, yes, I will make a follow up vid. I have three other configs. The two heavy crowd are of the weightless cult of backpacking. If you have enough money to keep replacing slightly brittle and fragile gear then you can have a 25lb full loadout backpack. That is very attractive to many. Those used to working with the military know rucks can weigh well over 100lbs with emphasis on ruggedness and 100% preparedness. somewhere in the middle further towards lightweight is where I am. The kelty's are awesome! Thanks for watching.
@@RiverKingsKayak tag me in the video's to so i can see them thinks
Wow...how super cool is that ...simply amazing, many thanks!!!
awesome shelter. I plan on doing hammock camping for the first time this year. best vid ive seen on hanging the tarp.
Thanks WE, I have used everything and this is the best cold weather config out there. In the summer it is just too hot. I haven't used a tent in years. The last time was in Alaska on a caribou hunt where there are just no trees. I'm sure you will love it. We need to hit the river here soon.
River Kings sounds good. I cant wait to get back on the water.
Awesome! Can't wait to put this stuff into practice. Subbed!
Thanks tecums3h and welcome aboard!
River Kings very true we all have our own ways I suppose Iv just got back from the shop with a budget tarp in the wrong colour and I’m still gonna use it instead of my DD super light just because I like the shape of it 🤣
Top notch set up... I want to do some hammock camping....
Thanks Karl!
Very good set up. I like the snaps.
Thanks PO. I hate to tell my buddy Keith, but the thin velcro he uses makes a better seal by far. The snaps are lighter and less bulky. I love this set up...rock solid.
Awesome video! God Bless You !
Thanks Michael!
A midshipman’s hitch is a good knot to know. I use it on my guy lines and it holds up my hammock with me in it
Right on Kevin!
Excellent video but I'll stick to my easy setup tent. Thumbs up!
Thanks bigmac!
Great video! Im in the market for a tarp and i think the kelty noah is the one im going to buy.
right on brother!
With very stiff hammock suspension I would try this setup even with bit smaller tarp.
just curious, why a very stiff suspension?
Looks like a great setup..

thank you for your tips with an excellent setup for a very comfortable sleep:-)
btw, i wish you a happy new year!
Thanks Prague Resident! Happy New Year to you as well! The Green is the new color from kelty...
Great set up!
Thanks Pasqual!
But I get your point, the price of some these tarps that get shilled on youtube are prohibitive.
great video what size of tarp is that ?? thank for your time .
16' x 16'
Very cool .im considering it for winter camping in canada
The only drawback would be a heavy snow load...you would need to mind it a bit and steepen the angles up. Overall, I think you would like it!
i like your setup, I have a tarp bigger than that but had trouble with the ridgeline, i will try out your method
Let me know how it goes!!
Thanks Phil!!
bout to try this 16 set up in the Raywah wilderness in CO..temps get into the low 30s at night(and i like being comfortable, encloser is key along w staying above ground!)
i use a grand trunk skeeter beater(bugs get thick by the lake)pack comin in @ 17-18lbs total weight w 2-3 days of dry food & kitchen..try and handline some trout whenever possible ..good set up man..preciate!

Very nice setup! I'm definitely going to try it at the weekend! I'm always trying new setups but hadnt come across this one before
Right on Dread Waaagh Gaming! Let me know how you like it!
@@DreadWaaaghGaming looking forward to that!
@@RiverKingsKayak I'm out now bud but my tarp isnt as large nor does it have as many attachment points. I'm rolling with a 3x3 DD tarp. Nevermind! I tried! Will have to wait till I get another tarp
@@DreadWaaaghGaming gotcha. Enjoy being out there!
I've been looking into a big tarp like this one, in fact it's sitting in my amazon cart. My wife likes to hammock side by side on same 2 trees, so I am needing something big enough to cover both and potentially close like you show in the video. I think it's just a matter of time before I buy it.
Ive done that before, in fact several times on the greenbrier trip. The 12 won't do it, but the 16 will. The 20 is just obnoxiously big...
YakkelBerry, how do you put up two hammocks side by side on the same 2 trees. I've been trying to figure that out for awhile. Please email me at DannyJeaux@gmail.com and explain this. Thanks!

@@erickmyhosh2719,
Same question, great answer!!!
Thanks Ron! I do actually. Here is the link! Hope it helps! th-cam.com/video/WHnsJEWX_4Y/w-d-xo.html
Oh you are the man! Thank you so much for the link and reaching back to me! I love this set up and I can't wait to try your ridge line and Noah's Tarp set up.
If i could find a hammock i feel comfy in, this tarp could seal the deal.
Matt Shively good luck in your search...have you tried the chameleon?
Excellent video . Love the Kelty Noahs tarp 16 but they don't sell it anymore. Does anyone know where to get used? I can't sleep on the ground anymore and love winter camping so this large tarp would seal out the wind like a tent.
Just went to kelty's website. They are still for sale. There is also an amazon link in the video description.
Had to come back for a review on that "truckers hitch" knot... what are the straps you are using on the hammock?
That adjustability looks amazing
That is the standard webbing and buckles option on the Warbonnet Hammocks...super simple and very effective!
@@RiverKingsKayak Awesome, thanks man. Looking forward to the paddling season! cant wait to hit the water! Happy paddling
Wow, great video and set up. How tall is the ridge line in this set up or can you tell us your height for reference? We are a tall family and worry about height. We have the Dutchware Clark VX Ultra so need a wider tarp.
Thanks Angela! It's about 7' tall. I'm about 5'7".
Great video. I learned something. Thank you.
Thanks Abednego1! Any word on Shadrach or Meshach?
@@RiverKingsKayak haha, you're the first ever on TH-cam to mention my name. My real first name is Shadrach, so he's doing well. I drink beers with Abednego on weekends. Meshach is a punk though. Him and his husband ran off together to San Francisco.

Very good tips nice video thanks

Great video! There is a better guideline knot instead of the trucker's hitch. Use a Taut Line Hitch. It's adjustable and will hold forever.
danny Haddox that is definitely a good one too.
@@RiverKingsKayak Ok thanks. Maybe just the stock image they have with it is just showing the smaller sizes. Thanks for the info!

Great video!! You say it will add 10-15 degrees of warmth. But will condensation accumulate? 🙏🏻
Thanks Rafael! On occassion there will be condensation, but it is limited to the tarp walls. This is a good trade off for me to stay warm.
Right on! It would definitely do that. Sounds like another fun hobby!

@@RiverKingsKayak 🙂👍🏻
Could you do a video specifically on ur ridge line? It looked like a really awesome setup.
Yes, good idea. I kind of jammed that part in there. I will see what I can put out here in the coming days. Thanks!
Kelly Noah 12 was my first tarp years ago. It’s durable for sure. DD hammocks makes a great selection of durable tarps aswell.
Pretty cool setup you got.
Have you seen the Nama claw hooks? $3 and I love it!
What is your preferred setup for the warmer months?
@@RiverKingsKayak Yeah, I can see how the prusiks would help. Nice.
The Warbonnet or Hennessy types are for sleeping.
i have been using a similar system with my ridgeline for ages, just a small l/weight karabiner on one end & a fig 9 on the other, much easier to undo when cold & wet

Good deal Barrry!
I also use tent guylines on my tarp, also connected using small karabiners, easy to swap when cold/damp, no knots used anywhere
Real good video! Thanks

What do you think of the Tenth Wonder Bunglow Tarp?
I have never seen that one in person.
The tarp you link to is a diamond shaped tarp. All the tarps on the Kelty site are diamond shaped. Am I missing something here? Love the tarp though. Would like to know more about it. Thanks
Thay are all actually square. On the link, they are simply shown hung in the diamond formation.

What is the knot/method called that you attached to the ridge line with smaller chord for the S-biner? I do not clearly understand the term in the vid, something like crusix?

It is called a prusik knot.
