Prime Tiger was so impossibly great that it overshadowed how excellent prime Ernie and Prime Phil were.

Phil was basically semi-prime for 30 years. His longevity is quite remarkable. His gambling and LIV affiliation because of it maybe, have overshadowed a bit his incredible career.

this is sorta true. basically tiger had to beat those two plus a few more maybe. nowadays there are 50 ernie els out there on either pro tour. the game has improved so much since 2006ish. still it's a pleasure to watch this stuff. they were both very sharp back then.

@@federationspace5264 no chance. I agree the fields are deeper, but to think that there are 50 Ernie’s out there, is beyond absurd. Tiger won three tournaments between 2018-2019, including the masters, and he did it being maybe 70% of the golfer he was in his prime. Prime Ernie Els whoops 2018-2019 tiger.

@@johnnybgood7442 well, it all depends how good you think the guys under-24 years old are. i mean, we don't even know their names and yet i'd bet money they'd smoke a "prime" mark o'meara for example. as far as the masters goes, it's sorta a different beast all together. the amount of knowledge and confidence that a past champion has there, particularly woods, can get you in the final groups on sunday depending on the year. the year tiger won, pretty much every other guy fell apart because they couldn't handle the moment and i'd go further saying that they probably subconsciously wanted to witness a tiger win because that's what they saw on tv in their college dorms. prime els whoops all versions of tiger outside of 1997-2007.

@@federationspace5264 I promise you, not a single one of those guys wanted Tiger to win over themselves, whether consciously or subconsciously. And again, he didn’t just win the Masters. He won the Zozo and the PGA championship. He also finished second at the PGA and had a back nine lead at the open. Experience is cool, but you still need to execute shots, otherwise Jack would still be competing.
And we have no idea how good those under 24 year old guys would be if they had to play older equipment with balata balls. Equipment has made it much easier to keep the ball in front of you. They are talented, but you still have to post numbers to win golf tournaments.
Lastly, if you believe prime Ernie Whoops Tiger outside of those years, then clearly you can’t say there are 50 Ernie’s right now, because there weren’t even close to 50 guys better than 2019 Tiger. He was ranked as high as #6 in the world at one point, so by proxy, Ernie would have to be a top 5 player in that scenario.

Els was one of those rare players who didn’t have any coaches I believe.

Poor Ernie Els. He finished 2nd to Tiger in 3 straight majors. He was one of the greatest of all time.

He also won 4 of them. Aussie, Bruce Crampton, finished second to Jack 4 times in Majors...never a winner.
