The Viren/Callum parallel is one of my favorite aspects of the show. What love is how the writers do it with subtly instead of saying some tired cliche like, “We’re not so different, you and I”. They just let the character’s actions speak for themselves and trust the audience to pick it up without being spoon fed it. I noticed the similarities as early as season 2, where Callum said he felt useless and without purpose because he wasn’t meeting the expectations of what a prince should be like. Similar to when Viren is yelling at himself at the mirror, calling himself powerless and useless. Especially with what we know from the novelizations and Kpp’ar’s line about Viren “overcoming the disadvantages of his upbringing”, it’s clear that Viren wasn’t born from a place of power, and that insecurity is part of what drives him to try and gain power that doesn’t belong to him. What separates him and Callum was looking more for a way to help others and contribute to feel like he belongs, where Viren’s motives aren’t as selfless as he likes to think they are. In fact, if you read the novels, you know he has a massive hero complex, and believes he is the only thing protecting humanity from a threat that doesn’t exist. All of it is just his own ego and pride. But most of all, the line where Callum tells Rayla he would do anything for her. Like how Viren said he’ll do anything for his family. We see that play out in Finnegrans wake, where Callum not only uses dark magic to escape his chains to save Rayla, but he tells Finnegrin the spell to kill an arch dragon, knowing that by doing so he could be helping him to kill someone and throw the oceans into chaos. And while Finnegrin being killed means that he can’t use that information, it doesn’t change how Callum allowed his fear to make him tell a secret he swore to take to the grave. All of this is meant to parallel Viren using dark magic to save Soren as a child, which is also implied to be why he put Kpp’ar in the coin. And while his dreams make it clear that he does love both his kids, its also obvious that he couldn’t put their safety or wellbeing above his own ambitions. We see that when he tells Clauida to save the egg over Soren if she has to, and how he couldn’t see the dark path he had led Claudia down until it was too late. I think what separates him and Callum though is that once again Viren is refusing to be honest with himself regarding the motives or necessity behind his actions. He keeps telling Kpp’ar that he didn’t have a choice, and that he was only protecting his family in order to shield himself from guilt. He needs to believe that there was not over way, and that what he did was the right thing to do. It’s why he was able to justify all the other horrible things he’s done throughout the show, because he stopped asking himself a necessary question, “What if I’m wrong?” Callum on the other hand I someone whose motives do come from a genuine place of love and concern. He isn’t looking for power like Viren. And we see from his guilt at the end of Finnegrin’s wake that he knows what he did was wrong. He isn’t hiding or trying to make excuses for what he does. What will ultimately save him from ending up like Viren is that he can be honest with himself about what’s he’s done. Wow, this comment is a lot longer than I meant it to be. Great video. I can’t wait to see what happens to these two in season 6. Here’s hoping Viren’s not dead because I need to see where his arc goes from here!
I was so excited for this - one of my favourite songs, and a Viren parallels video from you? - and the excitement was so very, very justified. Several moments made me "!!!!" but the only one I can recall precisely was the transition of Harrow and Viren to Ezran and Callum over the lyric "my dearest love," because that was a visual parallel I hadn't connected yet!
Such an amazing and beautiful edit you can see just how much time and dedication was put into it amazing edit. I also didn't just how many parallels viren and callum had good keen eye.☺
