Lepy LP-2020A Compared to Lepai LP-2020A+

  • This video compares a Tripath chip Lepai LP-2020A+ to a cheaper Lepy LP-2020A. The look is similar but the performance is very different. The Lepai has more audio out. It uses a Tripath chip. The Lepy uses a cheap LP2020 chip which is poorly engineered and produces an enormous amount of RFI. The interference is so strong I cannot use the amp with my shortwave receiver. The Lepai also produces an lot of RFI but not as much as the Lepy. Neither one is a good choice for using around shortwave radios.

    Class D amplifiers in general produce RF-spectrum interference that must be suppressed somehow. This is done by the output filter so the speaker wires do not become the radiating antenna, but if you remove the case then the board traces themselves can become the radiating antenna.

    Thanks for this video! I'm now building out a DIY upgraded audio solution for a 1UP Mini Arcade cab.
    At first I thought it was a typo on the brand name of the amps I was browsing. I was looking at a Lepy LP-168 plus w/ bluetooth as a un needed but nice to have extra feature.. but now I will skip on the bluetooth and get a Lepai. Thanks!

    I found the lepai amplifier today at the local salvation army. It is a beast. I hooked up two Bose speakers and pushed the button for direct. Definitely using this at my job when they do free movie night. Thanks for the amazing review. Hope you and your family doing well Sir. Thanks again.

    l had the original tripath lepai 2020A+ amp and that thing was a beast. l mean for such a small and cheap amp it carried it's weight. the lepy's class-D chip is more power efficient than the lepai's class-T but it doesn't sound as good. but as far as chinese mini amps go these 2 are the best of the bunch. they are the gold and silver teeth at the bottom of the dumpster.

    Does the RF emit even if it's switched off? Or do you have to unplug? Does any of the RF detectable with the case on? Thanks for the vid!

    • @charlessmith833
      @charlessmith833  ปีที่แล้ว

      The spurious emissions are created and transmitted along with the audio whether in the case or not. When switched off everything is OK.

    Question: Why did you put a resistor in the other speaker plug?

    • @charlessmith833
      @charlessmith833  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A speaker output should always have a speaker attached or a load resistor equal to a speaker impedance. On tube amps it prevents voltages from spiking and burning out the transformer. On this small transistor amp it prevents the output transistor from being unloaded and out of control which can also cause failure.

    I really want to know can you please explain why when you put your finger on the chip of the lp-2020a the interference goes away?

    • @charlessmith833
      @charlessmith833  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The chip is producing uncontrolled radiation caused by the poorly made power supply or internal to the chip. Placing the hand around the speaker wire, power supply wire or touching the chip interferes with the oscillation and makes it calm down. Everything is acting like an antenna.

    If you took insulated wires and peeled off the insulation you wouldn't expect the wires to still be safe to touch would you? I don't think it's a fair comparison to remove the shielding of these devices and then expect them to still work the same... Yes they work different under those circumstances but that's not the circumstances the manufacturer expects you to use this device, and that's to say they very well might have identical performances when fully assembled.

    Why you have resistor in the left channel?

    • @charlessmith833
      @charlessmith833  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm only using one channel. The other channel needs to have a load resistor to keep it from damaging the output at high volume. Standard procedure.

    Towards the end of the video you point out that both amps are made in Bukang, and say that they're "both made in China." Not that it makes any difference in terms of build quality, but Bukang is in Indonesia, not China.

    • @charlessmith833
      @charlessmith833  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, thanks guy. You are right. Thanks for noticing the error in my video. That's the first time I have ever been wrong (heh heh). If they had paid attention to the EMI and RF they emit these amps could be great. Unfortunately they cannot be used alongside my shortwave receivers. The FCC has requirements for this type of emission but it just doesn't get enforced. China is flooding us with substandard products that produce a lot of EMI. Sorry to see that other countries are slipping in the same type of stuff.

    • @charlessmith833
      @charlessmith833  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You certainly can use it with your laptop if you are happy with the sound. It will connect to regular speakers. It may be louder with 4 ohm rather than 8 ohm speakers because of the loading. If you want better sound connect your laptop to your home stereo system.

    • @charlessmith833
      @charlessmith833  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't understand the question. The Lepai with Tripath chip is better and will work OK if you are not using it for Radio Communications equipment. The Lepy uses a cheap chip and is tinny sounding. It produces a lot of RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). If you want decent audio invest in a used Public Address amp of 20 watts or so that uses analog technology like the ones Radio Shack used to sell. If it doesn't work it can be repaired.
