I've been to the Mojave, Las Vegas, and Death Valley and agree 100% about the heat.
I disagree about water filtration, even clear water can have harmful bacteria. Water filtration is critical even from clear water, it's best to assume it's not safe even when clear.
Weather absolutely, flash flooding is a huge issue in the desert.

Yours had to wear the proper shoes for the trail Because like you said thumb thorns are sharp enough to go through your shoes and if you get it in your foot that's dangerous in the desert It can get infected if you're not treated on time especially if there's no cell service where you're at trapped
It has happened to me I can't wait sharp torn and stuck on my shoes or something that's trappedOne time almost lost my foot with a ball wire trapped someone has left

Walking and camping in the Sahara is a bit different to "civilized" deserts! No shorts or short sleeves otherwise you will be seriously burnt. Wear boots, not sandals, as a sharp stone or thorn can stop you from walking for a few days. No running water to filter, you have to dig to get water and filtering won't remove the sulphates, it has to be distilled. Hygiene is difficult as the water dries almost instantly. You need at least two vehicles and carry lots of bottled water and a shovel. Apart from camels, not much else except scorpions to worry about so use a groundsheet with the tent. The strong constant wind means that most recreational tents will be shredded within two weeks, so for longer trips a really strong one is necessary. And yes, it gets coooold - about -10 (15F) at night!

How about hiking at night? Seems like a better idea if you are going for distance and it's hot during the day and the stars are out.
