Test Driving A 1989 Buick LeSabre

  • This gem of a Buick is a one-owner "little old lady" car. It's been sitting at one of the local used car lots since last winter (2009) and they haven't even had an offer on it. I'd been thinking of doing a test drive, so I finally did. It's a very nice car. There's more rust than shown in the video, but it still looks really good. I bid them $1,300 for it but I don't know what will happen. I just might get a call.
Amazingly, it started (almost!) right up after all of those months of sitting. And the A/C works pretty well...not as cold as I'd expect but still very good. Of course, I don't know how good it would have been when the car was new.
On the one hand, I'd like to give this car a good home and use it. On the other hand, I'd be half afraid to take it out and drive it for fear that the next idiot driver is just around the corner, waiting to crash into it.

My brother owns a blue one. He loves it! He says he's running it till the wheels fall off. Always starts rain or shine. Never lets us down as a daily driver. Battery seems to need to be replaced more often than they should.

This is a car that will always be very special to me. For Christmas 1988, my grandparents bought a brand new white 1989 Buick LeSabre Custom from Lloyd Buick/Cadillac/BMW in Daytona Beach, Florida, & I used to LIVE for their visits from Palm Coast just so I could ride in this beautiful car. It was nothing really fancy, but to me, it was up there with the best luxury sedans in the world, & it made me feel like a king just to be in it!!! To this day, I will NEVER forget sitting in those beautiful blue velour seats & feeling the cloud-like ride from the DynaRide suspension with one of my James Taylor cassettes wafting from the Concert Sound System. AHHHHHHHH........THE MEMORIES!!!!! I will go on record as saying that the C/H-bodies were probably the best cars that GM ever built. Not only they have the secret NAILED on how to produce that classic feeling of big-car ride, smoothness, comfort, & quiet, they were the best in terms of build quality/dependability/reliability, at least the later models were. They truly showed what could happen when an American car manufacturer took their heads out of their collective behinds & took the time building a car that could successfully go head-to-head with the imports, rather than just being obsessed with beating them at their own game. In fact, the LeSabre was named the Most Trouble-Free Car Built/Sold In America from 1989-up by J.D Power & Associates. Now, THAT is saying something!!!!!

This is one of the 3800 motors I have yet to own, I love these engines and these old Buicks.
    I've owned a 3800 Tuned Port Injection in a 94 Regal GS
Several 3800 Series II naturally aspirated cars (97 Lesabre Limited, 98 Lesabre Custom, 96 Regal Custom)
and a 3800 Series II Supercharged in a 98 Park Avenue Ultra.

I know where there is a 1989 LeSabre with only 100k miles. It is in very good condition, but has been sitting for 10 years since the owner passed away. Do you think it's worth buying for $900?

I remember my Dad got one of these for a loaner when his 1996 Centry was in for some repairs. He loved it. I had to show him how the hood opened for the heck of it. I do know about the ignition coil problems. My great aunt and uncle had a 1989 Olds Delta 88 and it went through a couple of them. Dad remembers a few times when they backed it out and it was missing a little bit.

I can't believe what great shape that one is in! The random miss you felt at the beginnning could be caused by the magnavox igntion coils that one has, they are notorious for failures. That one looks like a cross between the 2 lesabre's I use to have. The silver exterrior of the parts car I had years ago, and the teal "waffle seats" of the one I still have. That radiator looks new too. I like the wood grain on the dash, wish mine had that. If you can get them down to $2k, take it!

The LeSabres from '87-'89 had the same style grille, with the flush composite headlights ('86 LeSabres had recessed headlights and bigger slots in the grille). The grille didn't get changed again til '90, when the grille was slightly elongated, having almost the same "waterfall" styling as the previous generation Century. Also, silver trim was added around the headlights for '90 and '91.

I love these old Buick's. Very great cars by Buick. In 1989 Buick was the only manufacturer to produce the best cars in America and was rated 5 out of 10 by JD power associates. That's better than Buick today.

These Buicks maybe an old lady car, but if you need an inexpensive beater, you could do a whole lot worse. As stated, these LeSabres and their sister cars, the Century and the Olds Ciera were boring but reliable cars. Many of these are still driving to this day.

@01GPGT why? cause they were made by japanese who work for pennies, it also has a smaller engine (i guess some people don't like that, but some do), but a newer car is still better in my opinion, because it will have less problems, rust etc.

The first car I ever owned was a 1994 Buick Century I miss that car it was a very good car. The only problems I had with the car was after many miles the head gasket went bad so I sold it. The other problem was the brake and engine light would stay on and the trunk had some rust on the lid. I almost forgot the door hinge came off on the drivers side but I had it welded back onto the body of the car. If I find another one I may get one again.

Around here I bet it could get $2500 but id still say based on the time its been sitting you should have a fair chance at around $1300-1500. And if they say no, go a bit higher, or let it sit on their lot for awhile longer.
Side note, at 3:22 what is the song? I love that one.
