'Baby Reindeer' Creator Richard Gadd Reveals True Story Behind Hit New Show | This Morning

  • We’re joined by Richard Gadd, who’s turned his real-life experience of being stalked into a hit TV series ‘Baby Reindeer’. Working behind the bar of a pub, he offered one female punter a free cup of tea after she claimed she couldn’t afford a drink. That single act of kindness set off a series of events which would change his life forever. The woman - ‘Martha’ - went on to send him 40,000 emails and 350 hours of voicemail while obsessively stalking him outside his home, at his workplace and at his comedy gigs. Richard joins us today to explain why he wanted to share his story and how it feels to have created Netflix’s current number-one TV series.

After watching it I thought it was the best ever. However now I'm not so sure.
I believe it needs a warning as could trigger people.
Not all of us go onto to self destruct, use drugs and generally destroy everyone around us, there is another path. I fear this gives licence to the negative path.
Has the male been charged? If not why not? Is he still out there roaming freely?
Gadd said in another interview that the stalker in the series is so far from the truth of the real one she wouldn't even recognise herself 🤔
I do think once the press dig deep into this, which they will, it's not as factual and heroic as he's made out.

i’m a survivor and i’m half way through the series and i just realized a baby deer is a “fawn”.. like the trauma response 😭. when i first started watching the word was at the tip of my tongue. thank you for this. it wasn’t even the scenes that got me as much as your dialogue, trying to make sense of everything. like trying to grasp on to something, anything concrete to keep you from falling into the deep recesses of your mind. that’s when i had started reading this book on trauma responses and learned fight/flight/freeze/fawn types. the response is just as much a part of one’s story as the trauma itself

The strength to act out his trauma is immense. People can’t imagine how much strength it sometimes takes to go through it for example in therapy but to act out so many of those scenes is absolutely unimaginable for me. And I have been in therapy for over 10 years. I have so much respect for that man for telling his story. Amazing strength 👏🏻🙏🏻 And the series was insane…. After the I finished the 3rd episode my eyes were hurting because I watched them with my eyes wide open 😳😳😳 THE WHOLE ENTIRE TIME. I just couldn’t rest them. It was just so insane what I was watching 😱😱

I initially watched this video on April 18th and it was longer than 7 mins. It even included where he told them that in real life she did not get jail time for this but it was resolved. Also told them why he would never tell who she was. It's nos missing.

I think the story being told in such a self-contained format ads to its strength. Every episode also had a different runtime, to give every part of the story the space it needed to be understood.

The first thing I thought after watching this show is that Richard has such immense talent and intellect. You can see his intelligence from both on and off screen. Capturing such complex feelings and experiences that he’d gone through and to relive them?! Insane. Such a great guy that deserves all of this success and more ❤

I was a victim of stalking for 4 years. I am glad to see the increasing awareness and understanding of this behaviour and how it all affects the victim. Still so much more needs to change. If anyone reading this is currently experiencing the same - my advice is - keep gathering as much evidence as you can and be an absolute pain to the police - keep going, and keep making statements until they do what they suppose to do.

I worked security for this when they filmed Edinburgh fringe scenes. Was a nightmare lol so busy. Show looks great though and it turned out really well I think. Didn’t expect to enjoy it but was brilliant. Fair play to Richard for opening up about all that happened.

@@francine5936 yeah. Was so busy and so hot 😂 they couldn’t get any vehicles close to the filming areas so it all had to be carried or wheeled to each area 😂. They wanted the authentic fringe backgrounds going on. Got quite lucky with crowds assuming it was just something for the fringe so we didn’t get hassled too much 🙏🏻

Richard have showed us what a real cinema should be - it should tell us stories about real people, inspire and understand people and that we should start hearing stories from them. Brilliant acting and story-telling. It was brave of him to relive and act his experience out. He deserves an award and recognition for this!!

Yeah it started off as a relatively lighthearted dark-comedy, I did not know what I was in for but I'm glad I randomly started watching this. I only found out after that this was Richard's own real-life story, so much respect for the courage it must've taken to show such vulnerable part of his past.

Richard Gadd is extremely brave and deserves all the praise. By making his case accessible to the world, I hope much more compassion and understanding will be able to be given to trauma victims. Trauma is extremely messy and he is very brave to show its effects in such a raw way. Thanks for your service, Richard.

The way he was able to put his feelings into words, or what exactly might have been going through his mind leading him to the actions he chose was absolutely stunning and relatable. As a victim myself I can resonate with the guilt and justifications for not taking certain actions. Blew me away and I felt heard. I’m so glad he’s made such a success. It’s well deserved

Part of why I believe him is due to the fact that he doesn’t always come across great in the series. He’s constantly doing stuff that makes you want to scream, “Stop encouraging her!! Don’t you see that she’s going to latch onto that and further believe her delusions about your relationship!?” as well as making a series of bad decisions that make an already bad situation worse. If he was lying he wouldn’t have included truths that make him look bad. But the decisions he made are so common with people dealing with loneliness and trauma. I mean, I was really depressed years ago and got into a toxic relationship. I was just lucky that he wasn’t a stalker, or maybe I’d have a story like his too. Showing the truth of his situation will hopefully make people more aware of their own actions and how to keep themselves safe. After what I went through I wholeheartedly believe that if you’re depressed or actively working through trauma of some kind it’s best not to date. You’re too vulnerable to potentially end up in a toxic situation. Hopefully she’ll see the show and get help so she doesn’t hurt herself or anyone else.
Thank you for telling you’re story! I hope you’ve found peace, happiness, and healing. God Bless.
