I swear. The way Tim Minchin incorporated the letters of the alphabet into the lyrics is just GENIUS!
super true!!!
literally!
This musical can't be great without him!
That's true. Here's how the Alphabet is on the lyrics song:
So you think you're able (A-ble) to survive this mess by being (B-ing) a prince or a princess?
You will soon see (C) there's no escaping tragedy. (trage-D)
And even (E-ven) if you put in heaps of effort (F-ort), you're just wasting energy. (ener-G)
'Cause your life, as you know it, is ancient (H-ent) history.
I have suffered in this jail. (J-l)
Have been trapped inside this cage (K-ge) for ages, this living hell. (h-L)
But if I try, I can remember (re-M-ber) back before my life had ended (N-ded), before my happy days were over (O-ver), before I first heard the pealing (P-ling) of the bell.
Like you, I was curious (Q-rious), so innocent I asked (R-sked) a thousand questions.
But unless (Unl-S) you want to suffer, listen up and I will teach (T-ch) you a thing or two.
You (U) listen here, my dear.
You'll be punished so severely (se-V-rely) if you step out of line.
And if you cry, it will be double. You (W) should stay out of trouble and remember to be extremely (X-tremely) careful.
Why? (Y)
Why? Did you hear what he said?
Just you wait for Phys-Ed. (phy-Z)
And it's so clever the way he incorporated the way British people tend to say words in order to make all of the letters actually say their sound "Hell (L)" stands out to me
I love the surprise of the alphabet lyrics when you hear it for the first time
You can't year it ubntil you hear it, and when you hear it you can't unhear it
English is not my first language so I didn’t catch that in the first time. But when I did realize it my mind was BLOWN
Still some of the coolest musical choreo ever. I was transfixed when I first saw it and it's still impressive.
"my mummy says im a miracle"
"SHUT UP"
I never caught that until now
2:00
When I first saw this in theatre I think I died, I sat there mouth wide open the whole song. The letters in the fence/door are so so so cool
holy shit the timing of this coreography seems hard af
This is my favourite version of the stage one - the way the lighting with the blocks just makes it very impactful!
agreed!!!!
The transition at the End!! Theater Magic!!. Loved this show!
I honestly prefer this version to the movie one. The letter blocks being pushed through the gate while the older students dance around them is more creative and fun to watch than the mad dash through the school while running past lettered doors.
I fully agree. I love this version because it gives a while different vibe to the song and I love it. It works with the lyrics as well.
I think they did the run around the school so they could show off the setting and the insides of the school better
@Penguin Cosmos True. Unless an adaptation wants to take the "Joseph and the Technicoloured Dreamcoat" approach of making the stage play a literal element of the movie, what works on stage isn't likely to work in a movie, and they did need to establish the setting now that they weren't confined to a single stage.
Still, I wish they'd been more creative with the visuals with this song, used the "subjective reality" sort of like the "Bruce" song had.
And like the other commenter said, the movie's approach to the song gives off a different vibe to the stage version.
@Penguin Cosmos I agree
You gotta take into account the different medium - this works well in the stage version because it requires minimal moving of sets, while in a film you have more freedom and it would feel slow to have Matilda and Lavender standing still in such a frantic, fast-paced song
The guy bumping the air at the end of the Song while walking off is a mood
Doing this show rn this song never fails to amaze me with the choreography and lyrics
The choreography!! Gshdh my brain is not able to describe articulately rn but like,, it's so good

"arsked" was pretty forced kkkk
many words are, but it kinda works doubly in showing the kids aren't being taught anything and just have no clue
