    I think it has a great design - the colours, the fine embossed lines, the slight 3D-appaeal, the nice icons, the avoidance of bloody white which I always hated to stare at on any computer (something to learn there, TH-cam).

      It took up too much real estate with wide window borders, and the stupid panel at the bottom. It was a downgrade from fvwm at the time. I was forced to use this 30 years ago. This was a clunky bad design for the time, even on a $5,000 sun desktop with a high resolution display.
      I'm running Linux now with KDE, which is a clone of CDE, or originally was. It's now highly optimized. There's no bars around my html browser, my desktop bar is 1/10th the size of what you see here, and I have a 2K monitor, however, I can allow it to hide when my mouse doesn't hover over it although on a 2K monitor isn't not necessary. KDE is more like Gnome2.0 than Gnome3.0 is. I really liked Gnome2.0. I despise Gnome3.0.

    The design is IMHO still cool, I am using CDE themes on Linux for years.

      CDE is still around available for Linux, and all BSDs. It even runs on a Raspberry Pi

    It is superb. It has some design motifs I feel natural, comfortable, and inviting of how I function. Of what I expect. It feels right for me personally. As far as the window manager and all its associated design motifs go, I prefer that.

      There's also Open Look, which was discarded for CDE.

    I used to use CDE on OSF/1 on a Digital (DEC) AlphaStation 255. I also saw it on OpenVMS on an AlphaServer 2100.

    Most of the memory is taken by X itself, the OS (debian would take 30mb) CDE would actually be in the order of 20mb of ram. Dtlogin session (Manager would add 10mb) thats basically it.

    CDE was extremely light weight. I remember when we upgraded our Sun Microsystems Workstation 3/80 to 16MBs (effectively doubling it from the 8MBs it came with) and we upgraded to CDE the next year and it was just as fast as the base SunOS X11 window manager (xvm). To be honest, I didnt like the screen space being taken up by something that felt unnecessary, but the ability to use multiple desktops (with running multiple versions of xvm on separate ttys) really ended up winning me over.

    Wow this reminds me of an old compaq PC my parents had in the late 90s to about 2000 when I was a kid, I think it was setup to dual boot windows 95 and some old version of linux.

    I remember these computers at a gym my sis went to had CDE, could have been solaris.. cant be sure. They were designing shirts and using a plotter. What hardware do you think they might have been using? (90s) sun box? Epson? What company made plotters back then?

    virtual desktops in 1993 :D it took microsoft only 20 years...

    • @Laserchicken88
      @Laserchicken88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually it was a feature since Windows XP (or might even have been Windows 2000). But you needed to create your own software to use it. (Like Dexpot) But the native functionality has always been there as it is in Windows 10.

    • @vwestlife

      The native implementation was first I think on amiga in the mid 80's, and 1993 for linux. GG Windows, just a little more than 20 years to do so.

    Doesn't double leftclick close window? In Windows 3.11-Windows 10 You can close window by double clicking icon in upper left corner and those windows looks like 3.11 to me.

    Is there a BINARY package of OpenCDE available for Fedora? I'm still waiting, since 2012 for one. I am not comfortable compiling a desktop environment for my workstation for software that is so critical.

    hey quid, I've got a question I havn't been able to solve for quite some time,
    only thing I've been able to try is using v4l2loopback to create Dev/video1 dev/video2
    as dummy sources that are supposed to just stream and copy my dev/video 1,
    but I have never been able to get this to work, I'd like to be able to stream my video source
    to multiple applications similar to something like manycam for windows lets you do,
    any thoughts?

    i've been using GhostBSD for a while, wouldn't mind daily computing on CDE lol. Most of my games and apps work just fine, heck my room is pretty retro anyway. This would be a welcome experience.

    I hated CDE and KDE was a clone of it. KDE in its early days was the same garbage, so I moved to GTK/GNOME - but then GNOME moved to a terribly broken GNOME 3.0, which was crap, and KDE by that time fixed itself so it wasn't garbage, and I'm running it now. I'm using it now to type this.

  • @Kneedragon1962
    @Kneedragon1962 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, it's arguably a bit more advanced than vi, and some perverts, er, people, still use that...
    I've just been screwing around with Kali+ Mate. That takes a bit of fiddling... You need to fix the networking, (there's a very good video on the choob about how to do that) and you need to add the kali rolling release repo, and then you need (if you're in VirtualBox) to add the linux headers and gcc & stuff... It's taken about 6 hours of stuffing about but I do seem to have it all working. Now I wonder how long it'll keep working? Oh, and it boots to TTY1 - then you log in, then you "startx" ... this is not something you can just casually give to the average 10 year old... but then I suppose Kali is not what you give to them in the first place...

    • @Kneedragon1962
      @Kneedragon1962 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      One tip would be "Watch your updates." Kali changes kernel along with all its usual updates, it's just another thing... But then you need to tidy up the VirtualBox GuestAdditions stuff. Newer kernel, old guest additions modules... sometimes it works, (a bit), sometimes it goes black screen... Perhaps you could fire it up and do the re-compile stuff at the TTY... but you'd have to mount the CDROM and I'm not entirely sure how you do that from the TTY...
