  • El Nino stops in air with passengers for over 23 minutes. This video starts minutes into the ordeal when people realized it was not moving.Workers not letting anyone know whats going on. My daughter, sister, and sister in law were on the ride. You can clealyhear people scared and asking for someone to talk to them. The only people trying to calm the are me and another person with family on the side. The only time worker said anything was when one family member broke onto the ride and told them to. Fire department was called by family. Even when people were gotten out. Workers didnt even ask if they were ok or even offered water after being stuck in 85 degree weather in direct sun. Scared and worried.

a lil hangtime doesnt hurt. 23 minutes of hangtime... yeah. Probably painful. Even tho the seats made by KMG (Manufacturer of that Ride) are incredibly comfy, even in those rather unfortunate angles. The workers looked pretty professional and not rude to me. Its better if the ride stops during a failure instead of continuing. The fact that it stopped means that the safety systems kicked in to prevent even bigger problems.

Some of the people on the ground handle this horribly.
Screaming for someone to talk to them, yes it should have been addressed, but at that time the only information they had was the same information everyone had that the ride was stuck in not moving, they were clearly on the ride platform inspecting it trying to figure out information while people continually scream at them.
The fact that this ride got stuck like this, is actually a safety feature and is intended when a mechanical or technical issue is detected, the ride stopped this way to keep the riders safe they were not in any danger.
I know it's a scary situation for all involved but I wish people on the ground handled it a little better, they're screaming and everything only scares people on the ride more, they needed to take a breath relax, realize their loved ones are safe, contact emergency services and take it from there.
The carnival people not talking to the guests that got stuck afterward is terrible and inexcusable, them not saying anything while they're trying to look at the ride and figure out what's wrong while being incessantly screamed at by multiple people may not entirely be uncalled for.
There were more than five workers inspecting and trying to fix the ride within 1 minute and 30 seconds of the start of this video, they were absolutely taking quick action and trying to figure out what was wrong, let them work and fix the issue stop screaming your head off at them, it doesn't fix the situation it doesn't keep the people calm on the ride, it puts everyone under more pressure which can make the situation more dangerous.
How much safer would the people in the ride of felt if the people on the ground would have just said "Hey guys you're all right, we called the fire department don't worry about it one bit, you'll be down as quick as possible."
Instead it was screaming, crying and panicking which only led to the riders being more upset.
But hey what do I know ;)

They dont run on Gas. Its usually electricity, for a few rides (not this one) its an oil motor, that uses pressure and oil to get stuff moving (not burning the oil). Also, that wasn't a power outage. The Safety system detected a failure and safely stopped the ride, as it should. Its better to get stuck for 20+ minutes instead of something happening like what happened with fireball or other rides that failed. This is a normal (but obviously rarely occuring) thing.

This is a dream come true for people that love rides like this or roller coasters or..... well any type of ride..
It does not happen a lot that a ride e-stops (and your on it yourselve)..... It's perfectly normal that this happens.... it just means the ride has found an issue and instead of completing it's program it stops half way. People that call the police and fire trucks really don't know anything about rides and even more are calling them for nothing really... Everything get's tested and there is always a solution to the issue and if there is no solution the ride operator can call them by themselves... brakes are designed to brake when there is no power and when powered they open.... Think about it... it's safe and... it saves power... it's a win/win.
Ofc the ride operator could tell the people on the ride what is happening (not every 5 minutes though, like people are demanding... Shouting to the operators and constantly asking questions does not help speed u the fix though) and maybe should provide some after care..... but hey...people were not actually in danger. it's a minor inconvenience. The people screaming and shouting not being in the ride probably even made it a worse experience for the people in the ride then it was. Because they were freaking out more then the people on it :P People on it just got an extended ride time :P

The byline on this makes it sound like the ride folks were doing nothing and that's NOT TRUE. Observe the activity carefully. The ride operators are NOT the ride engineers. The operators know how to load people, turn it on, and turn it off, then unload people. Most of the time it works perfectly. But, when a malfunction like this happens, then the ride maintenance people are called. When they get there, they go right to work, trying to figure out what has malfunctioned. They investigate carefully to see exactly why the ride is frozen so that no one is released from the safety restraints until the ride has been fully diagnosed. "They're not tellin' them nothing!" Of course they aren't. They may not yet know since it's a HUGE machine with complicated controls. Explaining what's wrong, or what they don't know won't help anyone, while continuing to work as fast as possible to understand and possibly fix the problem WILL help.
Since breakdowns are always a possibility, one should only ride if you can remain calm and be patient. The operators are not trained (if anyone should be) to handle distress of patrons. Like I said, they know how to operate the thing, not how to manage distress. One guy starts talking up the kids, and that made things better. If you can keep them distracted, they won't feel so stressed.
As for the engineers, there comes a point where they may decide that the safest way to unload people would be to have the fire department assist in getting them down. But, again, this has to be done CAREFULLY, since they may have to release the restraints on a whole seat worth of riders at once. That would be trickiest for the ones hanging face down. Nothing about this kind of fail is simple, and if the machine has a fundamental break like some bolt giving way or some such, then the amount of time to be rescued could go up exponentially. It is essential that those on the ground remain optimistic and supportive of those who must wait in discomfort.
At least in this video, it is clear to me that the ride folks are doing all they can to bring folks down, but with safety considered first over comfort or speed. That sort of thinking is paramount. Just casually blaming the ride folks is not taking into account all that is involved. I can't see much fault with the engineers or the operators, to be honest. If the machine can't move, it can't be moved. Once the fire dept. arrives on scene, they take over and the engineers are merely assisting them with their knowledge of what can or can't be done safely. Everything that happened in this video is NORMAL procedure.
I'm genuinely sorry for those who were held captive by the machine and those who became distressed. Rides are designed to be scary and we love them for that. It's only when we are confronted with how scary they really can be during a mechanical failure that we get the full scope of it. Little kids especially can't understand why something like a fair ride doesn't work right.
By way of comparison, Disney World has a team of inspectors, and engineers who work hard to anticipate and prevent accidents from occurring. But people are people and machines are machines. Even with their excellent record, Disney World has encountered unexpected situations like this. I guess I'm saying that even under the best of circumstances, something may happen. If it does, remain calm, try to relax, and be patient. Help will come as soon as possible.
And one thing that helps me in such situations is the knowledge that the ride may have failed in such a way that people would be safe, rather that continuing its cycle and possibly injuring one or more riders. I may have to wait awhile, but at least I'm whole and the ride isn't doing anything dangerous. I can wait for the rescuers to come get us down.
