One of my all time favorite Elton songs. So amazing watching you analyze and playing by ear translating piano on guitar. Wow!

I’ve been learning tons from the Elton catalog lately on guitar. By far one of the greatest challenges to find ways to play on guitar with all the flair he adds with piano.
Just ringing out the chords brings new respect to his song writing. The melodies are timeless.
    Great video.

This is one of Elton's very best. I have always liked Elton's earlier works, best. They were (are) simple and beautiful. Thank you, Michael! You did great!

My Father Gun is one of my all-time favorite Elton songs. I found it in Elizebethtown, which because it's Cameron Crow, the music throughout is so damn epic. Square One by Tom Petty also became a favorite after that movie.

I've never really been an Elton John fan, but this song always hits me right in the gut--my reactions are the same as yours whenever I listen to it. It's truly amazing.
Really great breakdown of the music--I'm going to put my PRS on and play along to it tonight.

In the opening you said Elton was one of the greatest singers and songwriters ever. True! But his songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin was instrumental to his success. Elton was the front man to what was essentially a duo. I believe Bernie was primarily the lyricist so in the context of this video it is primarily Elton’s contribution that you are focused on, but thought it was still worth sharing.

Elton writes the melody and music. Bernie the lyrics. So anything that Elton plays on the piano he himself wrote not Bernie.

Bernie Taupin is a great lyricist, but so is Tim Rice (the Lion King).

Great job of dis and reassembly with explanations.
I, amateur that I am, with evolutions from piano, to clarinet (marching/concert, band/orchestra), then guitar, mandolin and banjo tinkering from the 3rd grade to my 76th year, -- doing it not for money but for the love of -- firmly believe Elton John is the best composer and singer of my time. And considering all the greats I've seen and heard, it is very rarified air.

Elton was the first artist I got into at age 11 back in 1975. I guess I had an ear for great music at an early age. An 8 track with the Caribou album playing while I played Pong on a black and white TV.

Thanks Michael - Simple progressions maybe, but Elton's compositions have provided one consistent backbone to my near 60 year musical journey from Jazz to Thrash and everything in between.

Fantastic dissection of a memorable performance of great song.
Youre your own man clearly, but felt you channelling Rick Beato here.
Any chance of you two getting together for a regular general chat? That would be terrific.

I think this is one of your best videos, but maybe it's because I was playing rhythm and wailing this song from the sheet music back in the 70s when it came out. This particular recording was marvelous. The way you dissected it note by note in so many places made an impression on me as I've always shied away from learning some songs thinking a note by note approach wouldn't be beneficial. I was wrong. So thanks for that and all of the other great information you included. I appreciate it.

I'm so fond of Elton's music. The first record I remember my brother buying was the single (with that little disc you had to insert in the middle) of Bitch is Back. I remember I said "he's swearing!" 😂 I was 7 or 8.

The chord voicing on piano don’t always lend themselves to the guitar. Blues accent notes are perhaps close. Frank Gambale has a tuning for guitar that comes close. It’s a variation of the Nashville tuning that allows for adjacent notes to be played at once, as in the Major 7th’s and tonic notes together. Nice job in this!

This gave me a new appreciation for this song (though still not near my top for Sir Elton for me). The compositional mastery of Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is certainly enough to quiet anyone unfamiliar with his prowess: th-cam.com/video/EvcIborfG0Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7K8LGlRsqiW7g7sS

3 seconds of the song and already 10 minutes of commentary. You play more than him. Talk to the point that we forget what part of the song you are even referencing anymore. I know many people have suggested a once over the song then loop back around to discuss. I Can’t understand why that can’t happen.
