Tattooing has become so mainstream that there's no shock value anymore unless you're tattooing your face or head. Also because it's mainstream, a lot of people see it as a fad or something everyone's doing because everyone else is doing it. That way they can say "Look, I'm not participating in this trend. I have restraint and common sense" when pointing to people (celebrities) with ridiculous tattoos. Usually when people make these arguments they are pointing to celebrities and bad tattoos. Because thats actual art! The problem is in America most people and tattoo culture treats their bodies like math homework and the tattoos random doodles. They end up with a bunch of random sh all over their entire bodies that doesn't look good isnt cohesive and doesn't go together. Like Kirk said, there are some things in life that I do not understand. Tattooing is one of them. Having one does not change how I perceive someone. But personally I don't share the same concept of benefit others do. It's difficult to express how i can appreciate the art and the dedication involved in creating and wearing the art but at the same time have ZERO desire to participate. Think of walking thru Walmart and walking past things you know other people need and use. You know within those sections there are good and bad products. Traditional and trendy things. But I don't have a baby or keep pet fish or care if my Kleenex box has a cozy that matches my towels. But someone does. And I'm glad they have the choices available.
The funny thing about the elitist "low class" view of tattoos is that they actually used to be very common among elites. Tsar Nicholas had a tattoo of a dragon he got while visiting Japan. King George V had tattoos. And now that tattoos are more socially acceptable, plenty of elites (Crown Prince of Denmark, Princess of Sweden) are getting tattoos again. Really all depends on what it looks like and what's the placement. Some tattoos will always be trashy, sure. But as you know, it's been around for thousands of years.
Great topic to cover bro. I must say , being someone whos heavily blacked out , you have to be ready for the same stupid questions and comments... but I LOVE it..."bro wants to be black" is the most unoriginal statement ever Also tattoo suits aren't cheap and take so much dedication. Screw em' glad they aren't part of the culture
LOL ok this was funny. My older sister is so proud to be one of the only people she knows with no tattoos and I find it honestly so funny. The people that care about others getting tattoos are gonna judge people for literally ANYTHING they can that makes them feel better about themselves.
The claim that you’ll look bad when your 70 with tattoos is so funny. Like when was the last time you looked at a 70 year old and went wow what a stunner
I recently saw a couple of older ladies (70+) that were very tattooed. They looked like amazing and fun ladies. It made me smile and I'm looking forward to being like them.
I work in med tech and have tattoos. I don't understand this need to downgrade someone based on a single (physical) features. These people need to care less about other people's appearance and mind their own business
Bullshit. If you get a tat that others can see, you can't be surprised if they look and react to them, because unlike your natural features, tattoos are your choice, and people can question your choice. You can't just expect everyone to like them. People are going to see and judge, and if you didn't like it, don't get a tattoo.
I have no tattoos and no desire to get any, but, I can really get into the artistry. I have a ton of respect for talented and ethical artists. Judgment isn’t the way, ever.
Kirk, you seem such like a genuine dude. I like how to talk about controversial/sensitive topics surrounding tattoo culture. I’m 41 and been researching for a bit now before get my first tattoo. I’m hoping to get one done by you if it’s nun first one or not. :)
Black ppl aren’t black ink color. We have undertones and color variations w/in our skin. He doesn’t look like he’s in a minstrel show and neither does anyone else w/that tattoo styles.
i agree with what you say. I teach at a top university (I have for nearly 20 years) and i have visible tattoos and piercings. I teach finance to students who will be in the finance world. Many of them have tattoos and piercings and yet they get great jobs. Only one co-worker ever made any disparaging comments about my tattoos and the looks that he got from the others in the room were hilarious and made it pretty obvious that he was the one out of touch. I suppose if i had "F&8k the system" on my forehead they may consider that too much but a neck tattoo would not get a second took. And, since you mentioned it: I am a Christian. I go to a church where lots of people have tattoos. Not an issue at all.
lol I've seen videos like "No tattoos is the new tattooed" like... tf? If you don't want one don't get one. It's this weird band of people who want to act like they're "special" because they don't have tattoos. No one really cares about your personal choice at the end of the day. I'm not going to bed thinking "that dude would look so cool with a dragon on his chest"
I love when people say “those tattoos are gonna look terrible when you’re old” but like you said, you’re old! Who cares! It’s not like you’re going out to the club trying to look cool when you’re in your 70s. Plus now a days, SO many people are getting tattooed so when our generation gets old, it’s going to be way more common for older people to be tattooed.
I don't have tattoos and I think most people look better without them... but who cares about people (especially adults) getting tattoos. Also, I bet the woman who brought God in this conversation has pierced ears and doesn't think two ways about it.
I’ve never understood the “what happens when you’re old and you have tattooos?” thing. I’ll be old. That’s what’s gonna happen. I’m gonna be wrinkly and old asf (god willing I am fortunate enough to get old also). Old skin kinda looks bad anyways after a certain point and like it’ll just also have tattoos on it. Big deal
Idk why I'd post this here, but here is a context in which I think cultural appropriation is a valid criticism. It's simply when people use someone's culture to subjugate them. Like the British started printing a bunch of religious texts in India to make people more focused with their religion rather than British rule. Things like that I think are when cultural appropriation is a valid criticism.
Very interesting video, thank you Kirk. I am a 63 year old university educated British woman who adores tattoos. I had my first one at the age of 54 and kept going. My non-tattoed husband has always been supportive of my decisions - and designs - although he doesn't want any himself. Tattoos are for everyone who wants them, wherever they want them. If you don't want a tattoo that's fine but let the rest of us enjoy our body art. My only regret is that I am unable to have more due to certain medication that I now have to take.
Hey Kirk, wait, just a minute there, young man. I'm 56 and heavily tattooed I love my ink. Love your channel by the way 😂😂😂 the only difference between tattooed people and non tattooed people is that tattooed people dont care if you're tattooed or not.
I'm in my early 30s, just got my first tattoo a few days ago and have a corporate office job. This bs that only poor people or criminals have tats is completely false. I've worked with many different professionals ranging from accountants to lawyers with visible tattoos all making $80k+ There's a partner at my current firm who has a vibrant neck tattoo and he's bringing home well into the 6 figures. Yes there are SOME careers where you may want to avoid getting a tattoo that cant be covered up with clothing but i'm proud to say that MOST professions have come a long way when it comes to acceptance around tattoos. By the way i've never had a problem with tattoos, the only reason why ive waited this long is because im incredibly indecisive.
I'm heavily tattood and have a successful career. Throat, sleeves...bold/heavy blacks. My boss who's a millionaire and my best friend is catching up to me getting ink!
People will find anything to make themselves feel superior to others. "I'm old and I've never gotten tattoos yay me!" Like congrats? that doesn't make you better than anyone else. In fact it's weird to fixate on.
I don’t have any tattoos but am not against them. I’ve always said I’d get one of if I could decide on something I’d like presented on my body for the rest of my life, and I just never settled on anything. I’m 42 now and am one of the only people I know without a tattoo. I probably won’t get one at this point and am glad I didn’t get one because I probably would have regretted my decision. Some tattoos look silly on people, but that’s just my opinion. Some look better than others. As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.
What you said at 2 min should be framed: Not understanding something doesn't mean it's bad. They also don't want to understand, they want to pander to their audience, just like you said. (Also the guy in the checkered shirt is like JD Vance from Wish.)
I have no tattoos. But find them really attractive. I just don't like needles or that feeling that's comes with it (a friend let me feel their gun without ink). Do whatever you want it's your body. Just make sure you're not getting fake gang tattoos or hate symbols. Unless you wanna get lit the fuck up.
As an artist I've never gotten a tattoo. Only because I've never had a piece of art that I felt was "done". In short, never wanted a lot of tattoos, so never got the first. It is awkward, taking off the shirt at a concert 😂
It's the same thing when I counsel people going through a divorce or a break up. People will always say, "I just don't understand why he ________?? I just want to understand how she could_______? And I tell them this. THERE ARE THINGS IN LIFE THAT ARE NOT MEANT TO BE UNDERSTOOD! And even if THEY DO/DID get the answer to their questions... it will NEVER be enough! They won't understand WHAT THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND!! They will continue saying that "all they want is to understand WHY SOMBODY LOVES SOMEONE ELSE! That Ginger DUMASS in the glasses with a bow tie WOULD ever COULD never ever EVER UNDERSTAND why people get tattoos! I mean.. LOOK AT HIM???🤣😂 I really love your honesty, Kirk. You have a wise spirit!
Sky news is super right wing, so you can be certain what their opinion is on anything before even asking the question. I call the 'hard' left out for the same bullshit as well, the point being, it isn't worth wasting your time on their viewpoints or opinions on this sort of shit.
Here is the thing. I was born in the 1960's and my dad met the Beatles so I have not lived under a rock. It's just that when I was growing up most people that had tattoos were old sailors from WW2 that got them in the orient. Some guys in my unit that got some in Arizona but girls were never inked until the last generation and then Tat parlors were going up everywhere. It's not that I hate them, they just ick me out, but I am not slamming on them. I still like watching your show because I can understand where you are coming from but in my day most normal people never got tatts even if they were wire-out of Acid. Maybe it was because we didn't have Tat parlors in every mini mall outlet store but hey. I don't see it and a woman with tat's, no. Not at all. I know it's cool and all and maybe I have never been cool but ICK !!! Love your show.
That's an interesting perspective. I'm old enough to remember when tattoos were job enders in the 90's, if someone could see it they automatically thought you were a felon. It's kind of funny that before that they meant you were a survivor of war. There is definitely a difference in the type of tattoo a person gets and how many they get that reflects upon that individual and the type of person they are in the current day. Personally, I've always been someone that grows and changes with the times, so I love people just being free to express themselves more than they used to be able to.
Personally I always wanted to be covered since I was a child. Also some of mine have been forms of acceptable self harm. People without a lot of tattoos done understand what it’s like to have a lot or why some people do have a lot
Oh, this guy doesn't understand why people get tattoos. EVERYBODY stop getting tattoos until this man understands why people do it! (Sarcasm) By the way, not that it matters, I don't have tattoos, but I love seeing people excited by what they love, and some people love putting art on their body. I'm absolutely no better than anyone because I have no tattoos 😂. That's so stupid. I don't judge people negatively for having tattoos and/or piercings. I also don't understand why people cover their body in ink.....but who cares what understand, the person who has to live with that on their body understands why they have it and that's all that matters. Also, I don't have to understand something to respect it. I love watching these videos. I love your opinions and expertise. Even if you don't like a style, you can still see why it's technically a good tattoo. I definitely can't tell the difference between good and bad tattoos. 😂 2:07 Killed me!!!!!
I understand the desire to get tattoos. I don't understand that desire being stronger than my reasons not to. I mostly think they make others look worse, but I can appreciate nice work.
Full disclosure: I would have more tattoos. I like them. The stories are always interesting. The idea of a needle-ANY needle-I’m going to the floor. It’s embarrassing, but it is what it is.
@@Nitrohead123the irony of calling someone stupid while also not being able to use the correct form of “you’re” isn’t lost on me, but it’s lost on you, because you’re stupid.
I was thirty before I got my first tatt. I'm sixty now and they still look great. No, I thought about each one for awhile, No I don't regret any of them.
I’ll be totally real- don’t hate I’m here in good faith.. I have 1 tattoo. I had the intention 15 years ago to get more but I didn’t. I am happy I didn’t. For ME. I don’t want to speak on everyone else but for me I always enjoyed standing out. When I used to see someone who had a bit of art I would admire and check it out. Now I don’t even give it a second glance. If I’m being totally Frank I enjoy novelty. When something becomes so common and saturated I can’t help but not be interested anymore. Again don’t hate I’m being totally open and honest in saying that FOR ME novelty and being different is fun. It’s not enough if your tattoos are different than the next person because the concept has become more pedestrian. But I still have a side of me that enjoys watching the work being done, special art, the creative process so I guess there is still some value in that way. AnywYs to each their own
The Latte joke was stolen. I forget who said it but they said "a sleeve used to mean you were a killer now it means you're a chef." Or something like that
I want a tattoo, but my parents are so against them. They've literally threatened to disown me. I want a Japanese sleeve & a few American traditional pieces.
Sounds abusive to me. lol If you're old enough to live on your own, do what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If you're not, just keep it in mind until you are out in the world living your own life. I waited until being 41 and had enough extra savings for it. I'm kind of glad I waited so I know my tatts will last as I age, but you do you.
I see a cool piece of American traditional and that’s why I get em There’s no meaning behind each piece except whether or not it would compliment my other piece
For the cultural appropriation aspect, I don't think that these people understand what cultural appropriation is. Like let's say that I as a white woman got traditional Inuit tattoos on my face and then claimed it was my thing in the first place, or used them to give myself an "exotic vibe." Blacking your skin out, however foolish (skin cancer anyone??) isn't cultural appropriation.
The only reason these people think tattoos are "hardcore" or some extreme thing is because they were raised in a western country with Judeo-Christian moral views. In plenty of other cultures around the world, for thousands of years, normal people have been getting tattoos. Not just criminals.
Cultural appropriation isn’t exploring other cultures, it’s using other cultures to define yourself and cherry picking what they like and leaving the hard stuff behind. It’s lame.
Criminals are getting tattoo historically. Firemen in Japan too, to cover the burns. There is plenty of history link to tattoo and not all of them are bad.
The funny thing about it is that Australia (where the show is filmed) was used by the British too get rid of people they didn't like in the U.K mainly convicts so I just find it kind of funny how there talking about people with tattoos look like prisoners when they them selfs are related too prisoners
When I get tattooed it’s going to be for me, so obviously I’m still going to love it in 30 years. Other people make choices about how they look every day that I would never. To openly be so judgemental about how someone else looks is kinda a dick move

Aleksandar Karadjordjevic king of serbia had double headed eagle on his chest
Great topic to cover bro. I must say , being someone whos heavily blacked out , you have to be ready for the same stupid questions and comments... but I LOVE it..."bro wants to be black" is the most unoriginal statement ever
Also tattoo suits aren't cheap and take so much dedication. Screw em' glad they aren't part of the culture
yea im glad i found the topic, it gave me a lot of different topics to talk about. but yea screw em
@@kirkfagantattoo keep them coming my man.
LOL ok this was funny. My older sister is so proud to be one of the only people she knows with no tattoos and I find it honestly so funny. The people that care about others getting tattoos are gonna judge people for literally ANYTHING they can that makes them feel better about themselves.
yea i get the feeling that these people woud do exactly that, judge people for anythinf!
The claim that you’ll look bad when your 70 with tattoos is so funny. Like when was the last time you looked at a 70 year old and went wow what a stunner
some people like gilfs
I'll just say... wait 'til you're seventy.
I recently saw a couple of older ladies (70+) that were very tattooed. They looked like amazing and fun ladies. It made me smile and I'm looking forward to being like them.
I work in med tech and have tattoos. I don't understand this need to downgrade someone based on a single (physical) features. These people need to care less about other people's appearance and mind their own business
yea thats very true
Bullshit. If you get a tat that others can see, you can't be surprised if they look and react to them, because unlike your natural features, tattoos are your choice, and people can question your choice.
You can't just expect everyone to like them.
People are going to see and judge, and if you didn't like it, don't get a tattoo.
Every time I’m in the ER or the doctor’s office I get compliments. Including my dermatologist.
Tattoos might be the thing on your body that looks the best at 70
I have no tattoos and no desire to get any, but, I can really get into the artistry.
Anytime anyone who clearly disapproves asks me why I have tattoos I just tell them I’m aroused by pain. That usually shuts the conversation down 😂
3:10 Yes! Yes! And Amen!!
if we have to explain, they wouldnt understand. so therefore, no explantion required 😃
thats very ture, they wull never understand
@@kirkfagantattoo i kinda like it that way. its OURSSSSS 🖤🖤🖤
lol I've seen videos like "No tattoos is the new tattooed" like...
I have No tattoo and I looove watching tattoo videos. i like art. Tattoo as artform is very interesting.
6:53 That face really made me laugh😂😂
Cop here...Tell me more about how gangs work , white lady that's never seen a gangster in real life....
I’m an accountant and I have a ton of tattoos with plans for more. These people are arrogant and close minded. It’s embarrassing.
Hey Kirk, wait, just a minute there, young man. I'm 56 and heavily tattooed I love my ink. Love your channel by the way 😂😂😂 the only difference between tattooed people and non tattooed people is that tattooed people dont care if you're tattooed or not.
I never understood the whole "you'll regret them when youre old" argument either. Old people with tattoos look sick.
1:11 These little angry air-snatchers... i am so dead 😭😭🤣 lov u
I love that “shitty panther” is on the flash wall.
I love your level headed perspective it’s very refreshing to hear 💎🙏
I'm heavily tattood and have a successful career. Throat, sleeves...bold/heavy blacks. My boss who's a millionaire and my best friend is catching up to me getting ink!
People will find anything to make themselves feel superior to others. "I'm old and I've never gotten tattoos yay me!" Like congrats? that doesn't make you better than anyone else. In fact it's weird to fixate on.
As a neck tattoo haver with a side job at a coffee shop, that line made me crack up 4:45
I don’t have any tattoos but am not against them. As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.
calling tattoos 'try hard' is the real try hard behavior.
None of them have the balls to get a tattoo. They’re just envious. 😂
I agree, I’ve always been super envious openly, this cleanskin loves a good tattooed person 😂
Envious of something they them to dislike or even despise? What logic is that?
What you said at 2 min should be framed: Not understanding something doesn't mean it's bad. They also don't want to understand, they want to pander to their audience, just like you said. (Also the guy in the checkered shirt is like JD Vance from Wish.)
2:05 THANK YOU 😂😂😂 I laughed so hard, I snorted and had everyone glaring at me!
You know for a news station you’d figure they’d have actual news to report on. Slow news day I guess.
It's a conservative news station, so they'll always make time to bash things they don't understand
As an Aussie
And this reporter is a dropkick
As an artist I've never gotten a tattoo. Only because I've never had a piece of art that I felt was "done".
In short, never wanted a lot of tattoos, so never got the first.
It is awkward, taking off the shirt at a concert 😂
Congrats on 40k brodie ❤
Your thoughts/commentary on cultural appropriation are spot on! - Very refreshing to hear. Thanks! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I’m from Australia and ALL of the guesses you made about the program and the presenters is 100% true
That group of people must be SO much fun at the network parties
55 since yesterday, made my 1st tattoo appointment for february 25 :-) I‘d rather be an old one with coloured wrinkles than just wrinkles
Sky news is super right wing, so you can be certain what their opinion is on anything before even asking the question. I call the 'hard' left out for the same bullshit as well, the point being, it isn't worth wasting your time on their viewpoints or opinions on this sort of shit.
Yes key words on this sort of shit. They have some pretty ballsy good opinions on other shit
People with tattoos have been awfully defensive recently.
(Sarcasm)
By the way, not that it matters, I don't have tattoos, but I love seeing people excited by what they love, and some people love putting art on their body.
As an Australian, my apologies go to the rest of our tattoo community worldwide.
These comments from our so called reporters are appalling.
plot twist, the guy in the middle with glasses takes off his jacket and shirt and he got a full body suit hidden underneath :O
Got my first tattoo when I turned 70
I understand the desire to get tattoos. I don't understand that desire being stronger than my reasons not to. I mostly think they make others look worse, but I can appreciate nice work.
Dude you are the best, I can’t get enough of your content. Keep it up
Full disclosure: I would have more tattoos. I like them. The stories are always interesting. The idea of a needle-ANY needle-I’m going to the floor. It’s embarrassing, but it is what it is.
I love how they say tattoo with an Australian accent.. it's "TAD-OOZE"😅
“I’m a clean skin”
Lmao that was so cringe. They talk about younger people not knowing themselves but then she self identified as a “clean skin” 🤣
And what’s the problem with that? She had no tats so therefore has clean skin pretty self explanatory if your not stupid
@@Nitrohead123the irony of calling someone stupid while also not being able to use the correct form of “you’re” isn’t lost on me, but it’s lost on you, because you’re stupid.
I feel like these newscasters don’t live in the real world today they must be real boring and very sheltered.
My 85 year old Grandma’s ankle tat is still sicccckkkkkkkk
I was thirty before I got my first tatt. I'm sixty now and they still look great. No, I thought about each one for awhile, No I don't regret any of them.
That panel summed up: 5 people, 1 brain cell.
I forget who said it but they said "a sleeve used to mean you were a killer now it means you're a chef." Or something like that
Thanks for making this!
the a hole bleaching metaphor got me well
cheers to this channel, good quality material
I want a tattoo, but my parents are so against them. They've literally threatened to disown me. I want a Japanese sleeve & a few American traditional pieces.
Sounds abusive to me. lol If you're old enough to live on your own, do what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If you're not, just keep it in mind until you are out in the world living your own life. I waited until being 41 and had enough extra savings for it. I'm kind of glad I waited so I know my tatts will last as I age, but you do you.
I see a cool piece of American traditional and that’s why I get em
There’s no meaning behind each piece except whether or not it would compliment my other piece
It’s lame.
You're funny babe. This one really made me laugh😂
TAH-DEWS?? TA-DOOS?? TEH-DOUGHS?!
I’m glad I made you laugh babe!!
I can guarantee that everyone does this-people with tattoos think those without are…not cool somehow. Everyone has prejudices.
Surprisingly I’ve heard this from people my age (early 20’s)
I feel like I just watched a colorized newscast from 1964
This is what's wrong with the world. I never thought anything of it. The word "clean
Did she really say have a clean face with a face full of makeup to change her natural look to something more appealing?
When I get tattooed it’s going to be for me, so obviously I’m still going to love it in 30 years. Other people make choices about how they look every day that I would never. To openly be so judgemental about how someone else looks is kinda a dick move
It’s like people who base everyone off zodiac signs
