"Education is a better safeguard to liberty than a standing army." Learning is work and therefore needs to be paid. Brain labour. You could say that children get "paid" to learn with room and board. Their "job" is to learn to be functional adults and the job of the adult student is to learn how to be contribute positively to society. We all benefit from an educated workforce.
