Directed for a few songs during practice yesterday. Used the Left Hand Preview - Right Hand Cut method. Worked well. Now I just need to remember to check for focus and headroom on everyones shots :)

This is awesome, I'm glad you were able to use a new tool! When you are directing you should always be reminding your camera ops to fix their composition. But, also empower them to fix their composition without hearing from you. A camera ops job is to maintain great focus, and framing throughout the service/ event. If I have a rock solid camera team, it usually feels good because I focus less on telling cameras what to do, and focus more on making the camera cut match the music and capture the feeling in the room.

1: It's a lot of things going on at once, make sure your hands the least of your worries!
2: it is soooooo easy to hit the wrong key and take the wrong source. Making sure you go via PW give you the possibility/opportunity to see it before taking it to live.
3:if you have them, make your CCU/camera control people check focus and headroom (and telling your operators), enabling you to put your attention to the creative and flow of things.

@@westsideproduction100% agree. A good cam op team really makes a difference. Lets you focus on the timing and flow.

@@ThorbjrnPrytzYes, I've found using the preview really helps. We only have a video director and someone doing the ProPresenter display in the control room. Would be nice to have a second set of eyes to check focus and framing.

00:35 Do you ever take shots with the screen behind them like that? Asking because I do it often when I'm doing camera.

Usually, we try to avoid getting the screen (IMAG) behind the subject because if moved wrong it can create an infinite loop with the image on the screen.

@@westsideproduction Makes sense. It can get pretty trippy when that happens.

@@aguyandhiscomputer Exactly why I try to avoid it! I think it can also make it difficult for the audience to read the lyrics in most cases!

@@westsideproduction, avoid to put PGM in IMAG, because disturb the audience, you need another mix (ME) for imag, with next frames: Medium CU for singer, MCU for others singers, your PGM is disturbing your audience due to fast cuts ! In broadcast this is the big mistake !
