Bad quality tomatoes can taste weird and calling it bitter isn't exactly right but yeah some people can't handle the taste, bitterness doesn't cause gagging at least in my experience. There's alot of microbes inside your stomach and gut, they all help you digest different kind of food. When a food isn't suitable for your body to digest you'll avoid it, this is actually caused by your body sending signals, not that nene actually hate tomatoes.

      karai means spicy (more comonaly than it means salty) and cabbage raw does have an acrid quality to it, esp the stalk 9give it a try sometime). as for tomatoes being bitter, she said "nigai" which does mean bitter but can also be used to describe the generic 'grassy/green" flavour of vegetables. extra bit of trivia, semen can also be describes as tasting "nigai" in japanese. so i think its leaning to that pungent quality rather than bitterness

    からい means salty? 🤔

    • @Nekomikuri
      @Nekomikuri  3 ปีที่แล้ว +925

      So this one's an interesting word. At first I wanted to translate からい to spicy, but... cabbage and radish being called spicy just doesn't really make sense. I googled and found salty is in fact another meaning for this term, usually in しおからい though. I messaged some Japanese people and asked about this, and apparently though the term is somewhat dated in Tokyo, karai is used elsewhere still and can mean salty. Considering Nene says stuff like おる a lot indicating she has somewhat of a dialect (example しかおらない 8:25 instead of しかいない), I'm assuming it's most likely she meant からい here as the salty meaning rather than spicy.
      Tl;Dr dialect or obscure usage I guess. It would be interesting to hear a native speaker's take on that, like if they notice Nene does have a dialect
      Or maybe I'm overthinking and she's just calling it spicy for whatever reason lol

      Basically, Shoppai for salty is common in eastern Japan, while karai is exclusively spicy/hot, so basically Tokyo, so basically what people think all of Japan.
      In the west however, so Kansai... I.e. Osaka, Hyogo, etc, karai works for salty and spicy. Basically any objectionable strong flavor.
      I do think when she said daikon is karai, she meant spicy, not salty. It has a strong tangy flavor.
